Sheffield Wednesday Post Match Thread 2 - 1

Thought we were decent enough.

First 20 mins or so we played some lovely one touch stuff, little intrinsic passes, one twos, created chances. We also broke at pace quite a few times and this is where we really missed Jamie Vardy last night. Had he been playing I think we'd have gone in at half time in the lead

Their goal was poorly defended from our point of view- thought De Laet was at fault. The lad still took it well though and was a threat all night.

Second half our spirited performance and willingness to win was epitomised by no one more so than Knockaert. He is literally everywhere! Deserved his goal

Well played Leicester!

One of them games where if we go 2 up like we should've done we go on to win by 3 or 4. As it was their goal made it far more of an even game. Good old Kirkland doing us a favour :)

Not the best game but I couldn't care how it happened as long as we won.

I thought Knocky & Mahrez were our best players. We got exposed for pace at the back a few times which was worrying but other that I thought we did enough.

I would take a first minute own goal in a 1-0 win on Tuesday. COYB.

Good night in the narborough arms.

Credit to SW who had more efforts on goal than in the last 3/4 games.Nug tried to play the Vardy role but obviously ran out of steam.

Antonio is good and NP should have done something after the earlier warning signs.Great to see though how easily we got the ball back after probably loosing more often than we should. We are good with the football at feet.

Quality always wins and Mahrez footwork and touch was top class Anthony wanted that goal very very bad.

Hope the egg chasers win as well

I'm not keen on him either. He is definitely one of our weaker players.

Sadly, I felt he played pretty well against us. He whipped in some top draw, teasing balls which I felt you should've felt disappointed not to capitalise on.

I loved nothing in the game more than riyad turning him on a sixpence.

Would have preferred someone to take out the woman beating, arrogant, jug eared, greedy mongrel.

Lack of buzz? If it was down to a tense finale, I'd understand your criticism. But we're flying high this year and leaving almost all other teams way behind us. "Buzz" has appeared occasionally throughout the season in increments - mostly away from home, though.

The "buzz" you're craving might return tomorrow after 5pm wherever the LCFC fans are at that point, listening to the radio or checking the scores online, should we have secured promotion.

And next Tuesday may see some official celebration, as well. I bet the club are also keeping a close eye on the Saturday scores and then have another 48 hours to prepare something special (a small celebration before the big one for the ultimate game at home against Doncaster).

And what are you complaining about the younger fans - you can't just have old farts coming in, can you? It's all in the mix.

I don't get it. We're on the brink of promotion and people ought to be happy about it.

What in God's name can you seriously criticize about this season on the whole? That Singha beer has not been constantly available at all home games? That the toilet paper is not soft enough? Pork pies that are too cold?

Seriously, what kind of luxury problems do we really need to simply enjoy ourselves?

Take a look at the table. Note the gap to 2nd and 3rd place. Then look at where Forest are. Smile. And be grateful that you're one of many content fans who are witnessing an event that last occurred about ten years ago.

This is special. Cherish it. You never know when we'll be able to claim promotion back to the Premier League again.

I expect there to be a buzz in a match which could essentially seal promotion. It's like people didn't realise how close we are.

No you can't just have old farts but you need more of a mixture, it's useless getting teenagers to lead the atmosphere because they're so out of touch.

You're asking why I'm not enjoying myself, I'm asking why the fans aren't enjoying themselves. Last night was not a stadium full of happy people chomping at the bit, it was merely full of content people. I was just expecting a bit more tbh, and where I was in the ground it's been a bit of a let down since the Charlton game, when it was electric.

I've always said that win, lose or draw, the atmosphere is the thing that keeps me coming back or puts me off. That's just the way I feel. I think back to special days where the atmosphere was brilliant, and that's how I want to celebrate promotion.

On a different note, I really enjoyed Knockaert's celebrations at the end. For me, it was a reflection of a man who's really appreciated the support he's had from the City fans. He obviously felt awful about the penalty last year, but he's remained a fans favourite.

If he needed any more redemption, last night was the completion of it. There was a feeling that the memory of Watford had been totally blown away for him, and there was true satisfaction that the feelings had turned full circle.

And Nigel kissing him at the end lol

I do agree with what you say, I simply don't get why most of our fans are so conservative when were on the eve of something special.I noticed loads fans last night just staring at the pitch like they were in a trance, very odd.I don't expect them to be jumping all over the place but come on...

I think we have really been spoiled in recent months, having witnessed some sparkling champagne football, and maybe if our performances drop below those very high standards, it can sometimes seem a bit disappointing, but to maintain those level of performances was always going to be difficult, especially in this league, with the relentless fixture list.

I agree that some of our players have seemed a bit jaded recently, but we also have to remember that like in a marathon, when you see the finishing line, the nearer it gets, the further away it can seem to be mentally, and that in itself can be energy sapping and an added pressure.

It will be interesting to see how the players perform when our promotion is confirmed.

It will release a lot of the pressure of recent games, the shackles will be off, and i can see our champagne football returning.

I went home and watched on sky sports, was it me or was there player offside jut before there penalty appeal? When was had to stretch to clear?

Would be nice if it was the clear the cloud over the decision.

I didn't notice any great atmosphere in SK1 - after the first half-hour or so, it was as if promotion was inevitable and we were just completing the fixtures with as little fuss as we could.

Everyone sat down in an orderly fashion around me and, apart from three or four standard songs, most people seemed just as interested in the two for one offers in the club shop as anything else.

The game wasn't the worst but Leicester were way below their best for the last hour and, if it wasn't for the good company of my youngest son who was up from London, I'd have been just as happy watching on television.

Wasn't our best performance by the standards we've set ourselves, maybe nerves played a part but the biggest difference for me was Vardy not playing. Wood is a totally different player and we missed Vardy's runs in behind, really working the channels. He also gives Nugent a bit more room and the understanding in that pairing is excellent, Wood doesn't have that with our strikers and as a result we seemed a bit laboured going forward.

Thankfully we had Riyad Mahrez controlling things, taking people on and gliding past players, scoring a lovely goal and winning a free kick which Knockaert sublimely put away. The defending was magnificent at the end, throwing bodies in the way to block shots and preserving our lead. The midfield seemed a bit overrun, Drinkwater and James couldn't get their usual level of control and we seemed stretched.

So, so close to promotion now, just want it done so today would be great. If not, hopefully a big display on Tuesday will clinch it. Massive win under pressure and showed the true determination of the team to win when not playing at their best.

I thought Wednesday looked a very decent outfit last night. Gray's done a good job so far, if he's still there next season, with some additions they could get top 10.

I must mention how different we look without Vardy in the side and this would be my one main concern for next season. We lack pace and a major loss in our work rate up top when Vardy doesn't play, his movement and pace creates space for our other offensive players to move into, Wood is too static to replace him.

I'm going to put it out there now and say that Vardy is our only striker good enough for the Premiership. Waghorn has now left, Phillips should retire and Taylor-Fletcher is definitely not good enough. Wood lacks the presence of a target man and is too static to be a Vardy/Nugent type of striker and Nugent won't score enough in the Premiership, his performances have been suspect this season against the better sides, the standard will be even better in the Prem. I would keep Nugent as a back up though but one or two strikers would definitely be a main priority for me.

I agree.

Our success this season has been based on pace and strength.

Morgan has been strong at the back, James and Drinky have been strong in the middle and Nugent/Vardy have provided the pace up front.

This has worked at home (quickly getting the ball forward) and away (quickly countering).

Vardy has been key... he is SO quick and has chased down everything such that the ball has stayed more in the opposition half than ours.

It was exemplified near the end of last night's game. Because we couldn't keep the ball up top (GTF is very very average and Nuge was knackered), the ball kept coming straight back time and time again and we could have easily conceded.

Where I don't agree with you is over Nugent. I think he'll just about be ok in the Prem.

Totally agree. Regarding Nugent, he wouldn't be anything more than a squad player for me, rotated in and out perhaps but not a starter. If we have ambitions then that's all that he should be. Even without Dyer too, he just offers us that extra bit of pace for defenders to worry about. Nugent and Wood are not lightning quick, neither is Knockaert and Mahrez isn't as direct with his pace as Dyer is. It certainly takes an attacking aspect out of our game.

I think the players were just a little nervous last night. Some of these are just 21-22 year old kids who are so close to touching their dreams of playing in the premiership they must be so scared of fvcking up. I think once we are promoted we may start to see some quality performances again.

Is it me or do we play poor ( at the k.p) with a sheet atmosphere ?

Performances don't mean zip ATM all about points.

And all that matters today is qpr lose and derby draw. Failing that all that matters is we draw (i think) on tuesday.
