England Heartbreak..

Recommended Posts

We may as well brace ourselves for the inevitable heartbreak, even with no expectations as such it will still hurt when England go out of the World Cup. Whether it be the group stage, second round or quarters..

Just a thread for people to share their heartbreaks, which one hurt the most.. This doesn't have to be World Cups either, can be the European Championships or missing out on a tournament like in 94 and 08.

For me, I think Euro 2004 hurt me the most, I was 13 and proper bought into the England media craze about our expectations and that we SHOULD win that tournament in Portugal. Lost the first game to France, then comfortably beat Switzerland and then onto Rooney beating Croatia 4-2! Went to the Coach and Horses (the rough pub in Anstey) to watch the Portugal game and I fully expected us to win, Owen putting us 1-0 up early doors..

Still maintain if Rooney hadn't gone off injured we would have won the tournament!

I was confident throughout the game and even extra-time that we would still win and then as soon as it went to penalties I knew it was over, I remember at the full time whistle the Portugal players were happy about the thought of penalties, England players looked dejected and worn out. The rest is history, the Portugal keeper became a hated man.

Tears and more tears streamed down my face, proper knocked me for 6. That was the first tournament I genuinely thought we were going to win from the off.

Euro 96 (but I was still a little too young) and World Cup 2002 are close.

What's your biggest England heartbreak, Gents?

phil neville's tackle vs romania, euro 2000. we were shit but fúcking hell what a dick.

2002 probably hurt the most, we were going to win that world cup and then ronaldinho fluked it and we lost to 10 men. nightmare.

yep, that moment the ball was in the air with Seaman looking like a fish out of water. just destroyed all hopes.

Yeah 2002 was nearly mine, Turkey in the Semi-Finals and then a not so great Germany in the Final.

F****** Seaman.

Euro 2004.

Believe it or not, for pretty much the exact same reasons as Grandad. I was well into the England hype as an 11 year old at that time and I was reduced to tears not once, but twice.

I felt absolutely sick at Zidane's double. Well and truly gutted that beating the French had been stolen from us and turned into a defeat.

And then of course penalties. Hated Portugal.

I miss having that attachment to it all though. Not qualifying in 2008 and the awful 2010 campaign (and I'll hold my hands up and admit I said we'd beat Germany, what a massive lesson that was) seriously killed my buzz.

Getting really excited about it all again now though. I've followed England more in the last 2/3 years than usual and it's made me more intrigued ahead of Brazil. Absolutely love the World Cup.

In Euro 2004, for four games, we were really entertaining, played good football and scored goals. 10 in four games doesn't usually happen with England sides at tournaments. That hurt because we actually looked a decent side capable of possiblt reaching a final.

2000 didn't hurt so much, you could see from the first game when throwing away a 2-0 lead v Portugal we were going to struggle, and we managed to beat Germany so at least we had something. 2002, group stages weren't great but the knockout matches were entertaining.

2006 and 2010- we were just dull and fairly lifeless.

Jesus, none of them were great!, I got sent to bed at FT in 1990 and in 2010 we were at least completely outplayed after being dire all tournament. So those two were the easiest to take, not qualifying for 1994 wasn't too bad, and in 2008 I at least was able to be smug for several weeks after telling everyone I knew McLaren would be a complete disaster for the national side on the day he was appointed. 2000 wasn't too bad either, relatively speaking.

96,98,02 and 04 were, by far, the worst. Had the lead at some point in all of them, and in every single one there was one or more unlucky/controversial moments that just didn't go our way from Gascoigne not quite reach the ball 2 yards out to Sol Campbells Disallowed goal, and obviously they all ended the same way bar 02. You could sort of view 06 in the same light but it thats when it all started to go a bit tits up for me to the point where I'd forgotten about 2012's game against Italy till half way through this post.

I think I was the most angry after 04.

I've just watched the first half highlights of the Germany 4-1 game, what a cheating willy puller that linesman was! Not just for Frank's disallowed goal but when Rooney ran on to a German back pass and the linesman flagged him for offside, that was inside 10 minutes.

Sol Campbell's goal in 04 made me the most angry I think.

But I remember being absolutely gutted when Ronaldinho fluked from 40 yards after we'd played really well to go ahead. At least we lost to the champions.

Italia 90 for me.  Another World Cup that on any other day we would have won.  You just knew though that as soon as Gazza got his second yellow that it deflated the whole team and it just wasn't going to be our year.  Up until that point though, I swore it would be our time again.

Cheat or just in a poor position?

I'm going back a bit but losing to W Germany in the 1970 Q-finals after being 2-0 up.

Germany had just made it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go and we went all defensive taking off Charlton and Peters and bringing on Hunter and Bell.

Germany equalised 5 minutes later taking us into extra time and Mueller got the winning goal for Germany.

Totally gutted at the time, of course it didn't help that we had Bonetti in goal rather than Banks who I think was taken ill just before the game.

But there have been plenty of other since.

Look how out of position our defence are.

Lampard's disallowed goal hurt as 12 year old but we deserved to lose that badly.

England games have never affected me like Leicester games have, the Play off semi final against Cardiff was agonising, I felt like I'd been stabbed in the stomach by despair, I felt sick, physically sick and I didn't even go to school the next day it was truly horrendous.

Euro 96 - only time I've ever cried at at football match.

World Cup '02 - I thought we were gonna win it after Owen's goal v Brazil. I really did.

Euro 1996 was gutting, especially as it was my first tournament. I just kind of expected England to win it all. I still can't watch Anderton's and Gascoigne's misses.

Euro 2004 was disappointing but I thought after Owen's goal we weren't great against Portugal.

We were so dull in 2006 I genuinely can't remember feeling bothered when we got knocked out.

Lampard's 'goal' was incredibly disappointing. I was watching it in a pub in Istanbul with a load of German fans. 2-0 to 2-2 within 2 minutes, for a split second I went completely ape before I realised it wasn't going to be given. Cheating German bar stewards!

I can't believe you were sent to bed in 2010 if you were old enough to remember 1990! Your old girl has you whipped!   :kingy:

I would give poor position but to flag Rooney offside when he was clearly onside and then the Lampard goal, cheat.

Look how out of position our defence are.

That's what you get when you drop Jamie Carragher and move John Terry to the right of a back two.

Actually thinking back to 2006, jesus just how bad were we? For a team of that talent it was embarrassing.

2006, our problem was no good opposition up until we played Portugal, we had a piss easy group in context, Paraguay, Trinidad and Sweden, not testing enough, then onto Ecuador, limped through that and then onto Portugal, where don't forget we played that game for an hour with 10 men!

England have always fared better in major tournaments when we have had a testing group (Euro 2000 a side), 96, 2002 and 2004 were testing groups, we had a major side to play against early doors!

2010 was the same, piss easy group that we limped through in second place! And then pasted by Germany as we weren't at the races early doors.

Yeah, I agree. That's what I was getting at. But then again we're talking about the same manager who played our best player out of position/right midfield.

3 standouts for the wrong reasons:

1) Italia 90 and the Germans. Gazza collection the yellow card and the tears, Lineker turning to the bench with the infamous "have a word with him" gesture, And then Pearce and Waddle fluffing their lines, Waddle's penalty being terrible was heartache. Furthest we had got in a world cup post 66.

2) The Germans again at Euro 96. The extra time, Gazza sliding in and missing, It felt like the whole country was right behind england and it was such a shame it fell on Gareth Southgate to be the unlucky man to miss the penalty. The England side Venables had was probably the best ive seen in my lifetime.

3) Brazil in South Korea and Japan 2002. Having taken the lead, the 3 R's began to cause havoc. Ronaldinho lobbed Seaman and i can remember the stunned Motson commentary, but having been given the manna from heaven of a red card, combined with a questionnable Brazil defence, we couldnt seize the initiative in the game and turn the scoreline around. A golden opportunity missed.

Everything about Euro 96 was special wasn't it, I would give a testicle to see England host a tournament again.
