Manwell Pablo Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I can't believe you were sent to bed in 2010 if you were old enough to remember 1990! Your old girl has you whipped! I was six
RobHawk Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I was six A bit of whoosh moment there a think! I was making a joke that it looked like you were saying you were sent to bed in 1990 and 2010, so presumably you were 26 in 2010 which seemed strange to be sent to bed at that age! Never mind, i was trying to add a touch of wit and it backfired! Never the same when you have to explain.
Jace Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 When Rooney was sent off in 2006 it was at that point you know no matter what happened in that match without him in the semi finals or even final we stood no chance
LC/FC Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Euro 96 was gutting and probably sticks as the worst for me. We were the host nation and everywhere was buzzing with excitement and belief. I was 12 years old at the time and experiencing my first major tournament since we missed 94. I'm pretty sure the depression that sunk into the country after we lost still hasn't truly been lifted since.
Guest ttfn Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 2010 was the worst for me because I was there. We were already booked in to stay in Jo'burg so when the draw was made we booked tickets to the second round and QFs (logically) assuming England would win what was, even with hindsight, a piss easy group. I was actually at the USA v Algeria game (where I had spent much of the game causing somewhat of a scene by (wearing my England shirt) goading the American fans - needless to say when the Americans scored to top the group I got it back with interest) and spent the bus journey back to Jo'burg trying to swap tickets with anybody I could find as the England game was in Bloemfontein. I managed to do the worst deal ever - 5 (admittedly low grade) tickets to what was now the USA game for 2 good England tickets, which needless to say went down terribly with my mates. Fortunately my mate had managed to pull and was having something of a holiday romance with a South African girl who sorted us out. Only problem was that the tickets were in the name of Muhammed somebody, which given that we were 5 white guys had the potential to be a disaster. Fortunately the authorities looked the other way (as they always seem to in such circumstances despite the tough talk). The atmosphere before the game was electric, probably the best I've ever experienced around a football ground, even though the bars were starting to run out of beer before the game (we went out after and the only alcohol we could find was basically an apple VK, and even they were in short supply). Once the game kicked off it was a complete disaster. As far as England goes, 2010 was my "heartbreak". The World Cup as a whole was great for us, we saw some amazing games (Uruguay-Ghana QF, England-Germany obviously and Italy-Slovakia amongst others). But England's performances, particularly against Algeria and Germany, were pretty disappointing to say the least after flying 12 hours to be there.

I'm struggling to see how else you expected that to end, given they were playing Algeria.
Grandad. Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 One Night in Turin is currently in the BluRay player. God bless, Bobby Robson.
Kitchandro Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The 2 Portugal defeats under Sven hurt the most, we were totally robbed in both of them. I'm still convinced the one in Germany was a fix, certainly we should never have been given an Argentinian ref. Everybody remembers Rooney's sending off but everyone forgets that Carragher had to retake a successful penalty in the shootout for no reason. Not to mention the way the match was refereed in general was extremely biased. That tournament was such a let down from England's point of view, everyone seemed to think we would win it, the hype pre-tournament was by far the biggest for any of the 4 world cups I remember or any of the Euros too. That was before I fell out with the England team.
Kitchandro Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Well done whoever brought up France in 2004. We didn't even go out, but I actually think that was the most gutted I've been after an England match. That really was unbelievable. Totally deflated. We actually played well in that tournament until Rooney went off against Portugal. The dip in our performance after that was massive.

Phube Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anlX9QIpT14 That! That 2-3 inches from the Final! Broke my heart...
Amin Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I've never really felt passionate enough about the England national team to get truly heartbroken by their exit from a tournament, my World Cup heartbreak was Brazil's loss to France in 2006. The one exception was Euro 2004. I'm not sure what happened to me and my dad during that tournament but we went England mad and were both gutted when Portugal won on penalties.
Ric Flair Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Cried in 2002 aged 18 absolutely inconsolable, was convinced it was our year. Was too pissed to even know the outcome in 2004. I woke up the next day and thought we'd drawn 1-1 and read we got done on peno's, I didn't find out it was actually 2-2 until about 6 weeks later. I was fairly embarrassed/proud of myself. 2006 really hurt, when Lampard missed I stormed out the boozer and sat out in the road. When I heard the cheers that were Portugal missing 2 penalties, the hope returned and I steamed back in there only for them to be ripped away from me again. 2010 was a damp squib that was just disillusion rather than heartbreak. 2012 was fairly upsetting too but the way we set out against Italy meant I had few complaints.
SeCrEt FoX Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Italia 90 for me. Another World Cup that on any other day we would have won. You just knew though that as soon as Gazza got his second yellow that it deflated the whole team and it just wasn't going to be our year. Up until that point though, I swore it would be our time again.Italia '90 for me too. Was about 8 years old and was in Great Yarmouth on holiday.Looking round all the local shops for a bloody arial for the black and white portable tv. Can remember the pain of loosing as an 8 year old, was absolutely devastated. I didnt have much to do with football until that World Cup.Euro '96 I cried for the first time over a football match. Thought it was our year, especially as it was on home soil. France '98 too against Argentina when Beckham got sent off for kicking Simeone and Batistuta was waving his hand around for a card to be shown, And his smug face when the ref shown a red. Remember booting the skirting board when we lost and getting told off . God I LOVE Football
SeCrEt FoX Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Oh and how could I forgot Japan '02. Was in Tenerife on a lads holiday and went out on the lash (as you do) the night before the Brazil game. Was absolutely w@nkered that night and we made plans to go watch the game in Linekers bar the next day. Anyway we woke up to massive cheers and realised we have slept in, so still steaming I chucked all the change I had left in the rip off hotel tv, saw the replay of Owens goal, money ran out on tv so chucked me England shirt on and sprinted down to the hotel tv room. And to my amazement, it was full of Scottish lads wearing Brazil shirts. They was cheering in our faces when Ronaldinho scored THAT freekick. Was gutted! And they played Oasis - stop crying your heart out. That night we went out and a Scottish lad in a Brazil shirt went up to a big bloke (why il never no) In and England shirt and yelled in his face "BRAZIL" and with no hesitation he lamped him, he literally knocked him out.
Grandad. Posted 23 May 2014 Author Posted 23 May 2014 I've just re-watched the Portugal 2006 highlights, we were bleeding robbed. I was 15 then and watched it round a mates, on the warm cans of Carlsberg, I was pissed through the game, criminal. Every defeat and exit hurts but 2004 and 2006 I think I was my own worse enemy, I genuinely believed in this pissing hype that we were the best national side around, stupid idiots in the media..
leicsmac Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 First that I remember was Euro 96, remember thinking after that and 98 that we'd never win another shoot out. Agree with some here in that 04 and 06 were the most gutting though...Ronaldo and his bunch of diving cvnts somehow getting the better of us twice despite us being the better side twice. I actually think 04 was the worst due to poor Sols last minute epic winner being ruled out again for absolutely no reason at all. Scandalous refereeing.
Vacamion Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Portugal 2006. I phoned my Dad the morning of the game and asked him what he was doing to watch it. He said watching it alone whilst my Mum pottered about elsewhere in the house, so on a whim I drove down to Leicester and watched the game with him. We had a few beers, a great chat and we were both really into the game. We were utterly gutted at the end. It was the last time my Dad saw England in a tournament before he died a couple of years later (not long after City were relegated to league 1 ). Despite Christiano Ronaldo's massive talent, I always found it difficult to see past him being a bit of willy puller after that game in 2006.
Jimothy Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 I've just watched the first half highlights of the Germany 4-1 game, what a cheating willy puller that linesman was! Not just for Frank's disallowed goal but when Rooney ran on to a German back pass and the linesman flagged him for offside, that was inside 10 minutes. Have you got that saved somewhere or is on the net to watch? Wouldn't mind checking out that offside, I'm curious.
The Doctor Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 Have you got that saved somewhere or is on the net to watch? Wouldn't mind checking out that offside, I'm curious. There's a highlights video with it in: - first thing to happen, 7 seconds in. Edit: watching that back, the defending for the first 2 German goals was woeful.
Leicesterpool Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 Japan 02- I remember watching the England and Brazil game at school, watched a bit of the first half at home then seen the rest from school, when i left it was 1-0 England!l. I remember getting into the class room and seeing that was now 1-1 and it was just about half time. I can't remember what the reaction was when Seaman made that error. Everyone felt deflated after that, but looking back it was quite a good world cup. Germany 06- Once again had that feeling of being cheated out as usual, Rooney getting sent off for nothing, should have had two clear penalty's. After that I refused to watch any more of that world cup, stormed out of the house straight after the shoot out. South Africa 10- I remember switching off just after Germany made it 2-0 and thought we're not getting back in this, then i think about two minutes later I heard the next door neighbour shout "YES!" when I switched it back on I just seen Lampard's shot going over the line and thinking OMG we've done it, we've clawed our way back but then realizing the ref didn't count it... at half time i thought, we can get back in this now. Then of course what happens in the second half...? switched off after the forth went in. My birthday was the next day and this of course dampened the day a bit.
foxoffderby Posted 8 June 2014 Posted 8 June 2014 Italia 90 gazza's tears. How we lost that day is still beyond me. Platt Wright Lineker and Bobby Robson had a great tourney.
ozleicester Posted 9 June 2014 Posted 9 June 2014 The hand of god.. i think has stuck with me more than any other moment. Still depressed by it.. then amazed by the second goal.
Charnwood Norris Posted 10 June 2014 Posted 10 June 2014 Euro '96 - we were the best team in that tournament. When Gazza missed that chance after earlier Anderton hit the pipe - I knew it was over. Never forget the Wembley crowds, the songs that tournament. Euro '04 - again best team of the tournament that year - raw and ruthless Rooney, prime Lampards, Gerrards, Scholes, Becks, Campbell, Neville. We haven't produced a better team since.
