Are we strong enough?

LB & DM are a must, also some of you have been saying we might need another RB & CB, if we have too many defenders, the likes of Schlupp, Upson & Wasilewski might not even be on the bench.

But yeah a LB is needed, it's an incredibly difficult first month, and with the likes of Mirallas with Coleman overlapping, Willian for Chelsea & Sanchez for Arsenal running at Schlupp & Konchesky is a nightmare thought. As I said Schlupp will be useful in some games, but in games like the first month, he could get annihilated, same for Konchesky, these wingers all have pace, knock the ball past Konchesky or put pressure on him, then there gone. Good left-backs are hard to come by though, look at how much Shaw, Moreno & Rojo have or probably will go for, £15+ million. We need an international quality left-back, it's a shame Fabian Johnson has moved already, so I'll take a look at Miguel Layun.

Also been mention of this marquee signing, I seriously don't know where it will come though, I'd like it to be made in midfield, but only if Pearson is keen on playing three central midfielders. Gary Medel went to Cardiff for like £9 million, yes they got relegated, but someone for that amount wouldn't go a miss.

I can see another striker coming in, but all this Deeney & Slimani talk has cooled off, Castiagnos is still available

I think we'll stay up purely because there there are 4 or 5 teams who I think we're simply better than at the moment. With the current crop though it'll be far from convincing and it'll be a nervous season with a lot of defeats. We'd need at least 3 or 4 additions for me to think we'll be anything resembling comfortable.

So you didn't trust him last year and your questioning his team this year ...

Yes, let's have patience. I still won't deny my slight fears. As my slogan goes... "In Nigel we trust!"

Have to say I agree, especially with the CB and LB. Don't think we need a winger though.

Guess I am a worrier as well!

I want a winger as Mahrez will be gone for African Nations.

Said from the very start I wanted 3 gk, 5cb, 2rb, 2lb, 4 wingers, 5 cm, 5 st to make sure all spots are covered and the most important areas have a bit extra.

Think about it in terms of how we compare with the O'Neill side on promotion.

I don't think any of our defenders had top flight experience.  We had excellent championship centre backs in Walsh and Taggart.  We signed Elliott from the third tier.

In midfield we had experienced head Garry Parker and some talented youngsters in Izzet, Lennon and Savage.

Up front we had journeyman striker Claridge, youngster Heskey and old-timer Cottee.

In goal we signed journeyman football league player Keller.

This time we have excellent Championship CB Morgan, talented youngster Moore, ageing international Waso, experienced head Upson.

In midfield we have talented youngsters in King, Drinkwater, James, Knockaert and Mahrez.

Upfront we have excellent Championship striker Ulloa and Nugent (with some PL experience), talented unknown Vardy, excellent Championship striker Wood and old head GTS.

In goal we have highly rated Schmeichel.

Personally I think we are stronger this time.

Couldn't be more wrong imo. Left back is a must

My thinking was that in a squad of 25 you will probably have 2 specialist left backs and a centre back/left back for cover. This is why I feel Konch/Schlupp will not be added to. Ideally one of these 2 would leave and we could bring in a better quality replacement.

What chance have we got if everyone hasn't received their season tickets yet?

I think we urgently need a defensive utility man who can cover the full back and centre half position if we were to get just one more defender in. Ideally I'd like to see a new left back and a centre back but I'm not sure Nigel will recruit 2 more defenders. I've worries over De Laet but he deserves a chance. If he is terrible or gets injured then is Moore or Wasyl good enough for right back?

I'm not having Dean Hammond in the PL. Therefore it's essential we get a central midfielder in. I'm worried by the lack of rumours in central midfield though, is Nigel happy? It doesn't bare thinking about if James or Drinkwater got injured.

Up front I'm happy to go with what we've got unless either an exceptional player is available or Nigel can get a promising young player in as 4th striker.

A winger who prefers to play on the left wing would be nice as well but not as urgent as our defensive and central midfield predicaments.

Nigel might worry about ACON during the Jan window rather than now but I'd much rather we recruited in the summer than panic in Jan.

This was the team that started that season...

K Keller (G) N/A   S Grayson (D) N/A   M Whitlow (D) N/A   J Watts (D) N/A   S Walsh (D) N/A   S Prior (D) N/A   (71) M Izzet (M) N/A   N Lennon (M) N/A yellow.26.0.pngS Taylor (M) N/A   E Heskey (F) N/A   S Claridge (F) N/A

So my memory was out on a couple, but the point remains that this team went on to finish in the top 10 and win a cup.  Looking at that squad as it entered the PL, there is no reason to suppose it would do well.

Am I right in saying that only Spencer Prior had Prem experience?

No, Grayson, Whitlow and Walsh would all have played in 1994/95

Good point.  Although they were part of a side which conclusively failed to establish itself.

I still think we look stronger now than we did then.

Sorry, wasn't trying to point out any mistakes. Just thought it was interesting to see the team that played the first few games. The squad looked pretty shit really lol

Current squad will get relegated in my opinion.

Very opmistic. At least we have a squad unlike Southampton.

But have we signed a top player, like they have in Tadic?

Nope we haven't.

One player does not make a team.

They will sign more quality players, they have money to play with, can still them being strong this season, if the team gels.

Could do back-up at right back - I don't understand the clamouring for a new left-back or centre back: at left-back we've got either an experienced pro in Konch, or a player who missed out on the WC by the skin of his teeth in Schlupp, and at Centre-back we've got two internationals, one with CL experience in Upson and Was, one of the brightest young centre-backs around in Liam Moore and a player whose had a great couple of years in Wes.

I'd be pissed if they take Schlupp to ACN after not taking him to the WC. Losing him and Mahrez won't be great. Wonder if Jamaica will qualify is that would take away 3 first teamers.
