Guest Col city fan Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 There are a few players who like to have a niggle at the ref. Unfortunately it's the modern game. Also it is a tactical thing, he might have been told to niggle at him. It's not unknown for coaching staff to tell players to have a 'niggle'. I don't think calling him thick as is a reason for not letting him be captain. He is probably one of the most intelligent players on the pitch yesterday with regards to playing the game. Yes he comes across as being a bit stupid off the field. I have a very high IQ, but I don't rate myself as good as him when it comes to reading the game if you can see my point. Anyway the argumentative thing, wasn't Dickov an annoying little shit? What about Savage? Were either ever the captain of their club or national side? Genuine question. Rooney doesn't ooze the controlled nature I'd expect of a captain. Assertiveness in the correct way. Not in a rash, indisciplined way. We've seen that too often of Rooney, though I accept he's calmed down somewhat.
ARM1968 Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 I have never ever rated Shrek. I'm passionate about it. I think the guy is a joke and shouldn't be anywhere near the England team, let alone captain. Wouldn't have him even in the LCFC squad if Lvg gave him to us free and paid his wages. Petulant little boy, pathetic captain and poor player.

fuchsntf Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 I did, still do rate him, his play and pass to di Marias goal was sublime, The crowd cheered when he over hit a cross ball to the corner, but his passing range, and running into spaces with or without the ball to open up games even yesterday is for me, out of the top drawer. No he probably isnt a WC top 8 player now, but top 20 who does give England that something special. Yes he hasnt produced in the finals, but then again neither as Gerrard, Lampard and a few others of note in the last 20 years or so. The England captaincy will either make his next and his last 5-6 years in the game, or destroy him. Perhaps has people the following 3 might have been t#ats, but they inspired the drips of good football England have produced. ....R.Ferdinand, A.Cole, and Rooney, adding maybe dozo J.Terry. Rooneys antics, just help people love to hate him, but when foreign players still show footballing respect, then you know he can still hack it. Thats what makes football contraversal and exciting off the pitch,100k fans in the stadium 100k opinions.

It's never necessary to stomp around like a teenage girl who just found out daddy bought her the new iPhone in black instead of white.

ARM1968 Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 My opinion is that he's so overrated it's ridiculous. But that is only my opinion, nothing more. Others think he is world class and that's fine too.
AyewJoking Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 IMPO, (the P stands for professional), Rooney fell out of love with the game a long time ago. Â A player of his ability should surely be worshipped and adored by the public but unfortunately the way he looks, acts and the amount he is paid has caused most people to hate/dislike him. Â Add to that the fact he is overrated which is not his fault but it has put even more pressure on him leading to underwhelming performances which leads to more hate and so he is now just in it for the money.
MrAus Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 There's a lot of hate for Rooney here obviously. But it's not his fault his club pays him that much money. He is overrated, but Fergie turned him into a robot IMO instead of letting him blossom like they did with Ronaldo. He doesn't come across as a nice person but the guy does a lot for charity and is almost always 100% committed on the pitch! doesn't deserve the shite he gets all the time. But each to their own, if we all had the same opinion it would be boring.
CosbehFox Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Referees are human. Dare I suggest that Rooney's constant berating from minute 1 of Clattenburg played some part in a couple of questionable decisions.
Master Fox Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Revolting creature. Their fans have a nerve slagging off Vardy when this hideous sack of shit plays for them. He's the epitome of scumbag.
MattGamble92 Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 I'm a big Rooney fan. Think the comments on him being overrated just come from the fact people actually want him to fail because they don't like him. Hardly anyone gets behind our national side. The England "fans" these days don't deserve anything more than a shit national side because you are all shit yourselves. You just need to look at his goalscoring record to see how great he is. One question, if Juan Mata played against us and set up a goal like Rooney did, and played exactly the same as Rooney, would there be this thread attacking him?

Sly Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Wayne Rooney isn't a bad player! Anyone calling him shit is a tad harsh. The ball he played through for the goal Di Maria scored was a great bit of awareness. You can't fault the passion he shows when playing either. If you look at the state of the Manchester United defense when Vardy scores, Rooney has covered the length of the field to chase Vardy in an attempt to get back at him. He just wants to win. You can't hate the guy for wanting to win!! I may be a knob off the field but I don't know the guy and I'm sure if the press were to mirco manage our own lives, they could all makes us out to be tools. Hell, if someone offered me £300k a week to play football, then told me I was un-dropable, I wouldn't exactly be looking to move! I think by staying at Manchester United it stunted Rooneys' development to a degree and a move abroad, would have benefited both him and England. As with a lot of players, great potential as a youngster doesn't equal a great player! We all know the Freddy Adu's, Denilson, Robinhos', Patos, Jeffers etc. At least Rooney has won major trophies!  The issue he has is that he's been moved around from one position to another. He's a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. He'll be a steady, effective player in whatever role he plays, unfortunately, you'll be able to name five players in the world who'd be better than him in that position. You could ask ten people where his best position was and everyone would have a different opinion. I think if you look at the Manchester United squad in general, you can identify this throughout the squad. Jones, Valencia, Mata, decent enough players but not great, as to a degree they are bits and pieces players and don't have it all as a package. Just look at Mata, Mourinho shipped him out as he rarely tracks / defends. They've wasted money!!! £30m for Shaw is obscene! Just like paying Rooney £300k a week is! LVG massively under-estimated the job he has at Manchester United, just like Moyes did before him. You build a team from the back, not the front.  The one million pound question is, will Rooney follow a similar path to the older Ronaldo and burnout as he gets over 30 and get fat?!?!
Captain... Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 A fair point about Rooney being played in numerous different positions, but there is a reason for that, as an out and out striker he drops too deep and goes looking for the ball leaving no body up top, same as a number 10 he gets dragged out of position chasing around off the ball, and then when they win it back and want to spring the attack there is no one there for the link up. This is the same where ever he plays he doesn't have the discipline, when he is in the right position he is a great player as we saw by his ball to Di Maria, but he so rarely is especially when chasing the game.  People are complementing him for being the closest to Vardy when he scored, but that is exactly the problem, he should be up at the top pulling the strings not helping out the defence, we see Ulloa, Vardy and Nugent do their bit, but they do it in their third of the pitch and do it in a structured way. On Sunday Rooney came chasing back and took out De Laet from behind, should have been a yellow and it gave us a free kick in a dangerous position. He was back "defending" when Cambiasso scored.  Controlled pressing and keeping your shape is better than headless charging around, unfortunately the captaincy will problem see him try and do even more himself than trust the other players to do their job.
ScouseFox Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 Nugent>Rooney in Sundays game. rooney was comfortably the worst player on the pitch bar uniteds defence. he was woeful.
maddog Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 I don't rate Rooney as England captain because: When he speaks in interviews he sounds like he lacks intelligence just with how he speaks and what he says. There's a reason why public and motivational speaking are professions. A captain needs to inspire and motivate with words alone in the dressing room, as well as performance on the pitch. I believe the right captain can inspire in the dressing room more than his performances on the field - my opinion. Rooney couldn't inspire a 10 year old to brush his teeth. Slight exaggeration but I just don't think Sterling/Barkley/Walcott/Welbeck will be chomping at the bit to succeed after a motivational speech from Wayne Rooney. His performances in the last few seasons for Man Utd have been poor. Yes he had a couple of great seasons 5 years ago approximately. But his goal return hasn't been great recently, about 12-15. Which for a title winning side isn't that great... As well as his agent/him demanding moves away from Manchester twice now. When he had no intention of going anywhere, only boosting his already HUGE and ridiculous wages to massage his ego. He hasn't done anything special for England or Manure for a good few years now. Other players are inspiring to watch for me - Ulloa and Cambiasso for example. And Van Persie when he signed for manure really produced. Rooney is the most overrated English player in terms ofof all round football ability since David Beckham.

Taffy (Glynn) Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 Never performed well for England? By those standards no one who has played for England in the last 15 years has. He played two games in the World Cup. Scored once and put one on a plate for Sturridge. He's soon going to be England's all time record goalscorer at a similar goals-per-game ratio to Messi and Ronaldo in international football.  Crap? Is the second most prolific Premier League goalscorer of all time, despite spending half of his time as a support striker for a "natural goalscorer". Has won every club honour available to him and been a key figure in winning all of them. Scored not only regularly, but also some of the best goals of the Premier League era.  And as for Sunday, I wanted to have a go at Chris Smalling and Blackett... and I wanted to see them lose. Fair play to him.  The biggest downfall in Rooney's career has been the diversity of his talent, been played all over the pitch, asked to do all sorts of roles. Whenever he's been given a run as an out-and-out front man he's always scored at a fantastic rate.  And as for overrated? See below.                   Apps               Goals           Assists   Bergkamp 315 (62)          87                 49    Rooney 379 (55)            175                  91

But how many has he got in his last 2-3 seasons? Yes he was a world beater back then, compared in the same breath as Messi and Ronaldo. But now so much has changed. He is just not the 'special' player he used to be, for me he is a slightly above average Premier League player and nothing more now. He scored all those goals agreed, but he was playing for Manchester United. A side who were winning the title more often than not and naturally scoring tonnes of goals and creating tonnes of chances for Wayne Rooney. There comes a point when his reputation alone because of those few absolutely exceptional seasons when there has been just as many average/poor seasons coupled with shit performances for England and his behaviour off the field to negotiate higher wages has to come to a head. His reward for this? Being made England captain. He scored a hat trick on his debut for United at Fenerbache, he scored that stunning goal against Newcastle, he scored that bicycle kick against Man City and many many more goals and assists. Special goals. But I feel he is going stale now and he won't get dropped for England for even a game now he has been made captain, despite a good few years of dross internationally.
fuchsntf Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 he has not won every honour on offer uefa cup/europa 3league you cant class somebody as overrated then compare them with another WC player, to prove a point. splitting hairs over his trophies. Not one person on this whether you like him or not, or opinions of international pedigree can deny his footballing achievements.Brash, uncouth, common from proud working class Evertonian stock. A prat, yes but then again arent we all, he just has some trophies to go with it. Some just have jealous posts behind them.
