Decent restaurants in and around town?

I get the points that people are making, but I think the food in Leicester is actually quite good and varied.

I've not really got much interest in high-end and traditional restaurants. There's a great range of cuisines in Leicester, for example the East African Indian restaurants, south Indian restaurants, lots of Turkish restaurants, good Italians, and lots of other interesting places like Karamay and Mitsuki to name a few. There's also a decent cluster around St Martins. I actively come into Leicester to escape the generic, overpriced, tasteless, pub grub you get in Charnwood. All comes down to personal taste I suppose!

Tbh, you make a great point. Maybe the City's selling point is authentic world food cuisine as opposed to fancy gaffs

Edit; any recommendations of places for east African here? I've twice in my life eaten at Ethiopian places (elsewhere) and loved it.

I agree with your point though about most people staying in the villages rather than venturing out to Leicester because of perception. For a lot of people the food is secondary and it's all about the surroundings and vibe. Hence why a lot of people enjoy overpriced boring shite lol

I don't know any pure East African places, but there's Afrikana on Charles street (no idea which part of Africa it specialises in).

Also went to the Frame last night which was pretty good. Town was also reasonably busy for a Tuesday night.

Retail agent I work with says this is pretty much the case in any large city. Covid has made people stay local in such cities. He does more lettings now in say a West Bridgford/Stirchley/Market Harborough than the respective adjacent cities

Just been to Soho Tavern in Birmingham. It was decent but nothing special. The mixed grills look good for Instagram but there’s not much else. Leicester’s the place!

Agreed, all these ‘desi pubs’ are so overrated. Just full of Punjabi’s desperately shouting at everyone that they’re Punjabi. With overpriced/greasy/oily food to boot. Leicester is the place

I still thought it was decent, but I prefer the Gujarati/East African ones we have in Leicester. Also preferred Hen & Chickens in Birmingham to Soho Tavern.

Fair enough and my disclaimer to above comment is I was recently in the Punjab. Great food and Punjabi’s who’s sole purpose in life isn’t telling everyone they’re Punjabi hence a much better vibe

Anyone tried Varanasi or Wild Tango yet?

I don’t feel the need to try Varanasi, as we are likely to have far better Indian food in and around the city, then inside the tacky restaurant front on the high street.
Got Wild Tango booked for first week of May, hope it’s better than Sonrisa.

Will anywhere be open early enough for a curry on Saturday, after our game but before the fa cup evening game? Assuming everywhere tends to open after 5 o clock ish?

The Taj Bar and Grill opens at 5 and is quite close to the ground. It’s pretty good there

Glad you went mate. My Mum taught one of the family so always get well looked after. Great spot.

I took the Norwegian lot there once not realising it was veggie but we all raved about it - unexpectedly.
