Decent restaurants in and around town?

Demographic has changed a lot more since 2008, yes having less money is a factor, but people aren’t just talking about Ugandan Asians when they mention Leicester’s multiculturalism. The West of Leicester has changed beyond recognition.

What has that got to do with the number of people prepared to go and visit the case? They didn't live in those areas before.

The majority of people with money to go to the better places live in the county not the city.

It’s not just necessarily the case. Sorry, I thought we were talking about high end businesses in general. But if we’re talking specifically about that restaurant, the West of Leicester that serves the city centre has changed dramatically. Furthermore, how do you know where customers live, who go to the case? It’s quite obvious where I live based on my username, but over the last twenty years, Hinckley Road shops has gone from having businesses that would serve a middle class demographic, such as green grocers, florists, specialist card shop, Baker and Butchers, Boots, number of hairdressers, to an area that contains a massage parlour and none of the aforementioned. Considering the person who owns the case lives on a neighbouring road, I’d say that’s quite a big factor. This is more of a comment on how the area’s demographic has changed through an analysis of the local businesses.

I don't suppose either of us will ever know where their customers came from. But in general, we've seen huge inflation over the last 18 months, with the corresponding fall in living standards, and businesses going under is exactly what you'd expect.

It’s definitely one of the nails in the coffin!

Name one truly high end restaurant in the city?    They don’t exist

A crying shame

Ortons Brasserie was decent for the nine months it was open. Closest to high end for me in leicester now, is the increasingly disappointing Knight and Garter, or Bistrot Pierre. So you’re right!

Where can I get a ****ing banging steak, chateaubriand if possible, not a million miles away from Whitwick?

The George in Coleorton does it but would like another option

Had a lovely steak at La Torre. Lovely fillet lady month.

I was going to recommend The George, until I read the last line of your post! Fab lunch there today.

Have you tried The Gelsmoor?

Alcohol drinkers (especially beer) are overwhelmingly white British, which is true anecdotally and there's plenty of academic research out there too. Leicester is 33.2% white British. The Case is attached to a champagne bar, the changing demographics of the city obviously has an impact on restaurants and pubs.

Getting in to the city centre from the county is a nightmare midweek too. I live 6 or 7 miles away from the centre and the earliest I can get into town after going home is about 18:30, without driving.

Funny that lots still associate immigration in Leicester with Asians.

I'm veering off topic, but the last 10 years immigration has been fascinatingly dramatic.  I cycle past the new Castle Mead school in the west of Leicester along the river  a fair bit.   The mix of kids is genuinely cool. Somali, west African, east European, Asian, Brits, Portuguese, Romanian. Tbh, Leicester mluist be the most London like city in the UK. (And according to my lad, super popular with London students of all communities who feel at home here)

But, these communities arent buying meals in posh restaurants or like white British,.spending 12 quid a pop multiple times on a mediocre cocktail in a dark bar.

Mates want to book to eat at Tamatanga, has anyone eaten there?

Nice but pricey for the evening meals.

Book prior though as it gets busy.

Good vibe in there with good cocktails.

Any ideas for a Xmas meal? Need to book somewhere for 10, aside from Johns house there arent any fine dining places. Any ideas for something a bit more special. Thanks.

The Hammer and Pincers in Wymeswold or The Pear Tree in Woodhouse Eaves?

Btw the places which are most successful in Leicester are largely cocktail based and brunch serving restaurants. Throw in an ice cream parlour which opens late (even later until recently).

St Martins corned that with a number of offerings including a bar which was table service before COVID and in doing so understandably attracts females over men.

It would have been great if that sort of offering was elsewhere within the city rather than it being associated with one area.
