Matt Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Well if you don't rate a player who has scored more runs than anybody else in the history of English cricket then there really is no pleasing you. Ok accepted but he just doesn't seem to come in with the consistant big scores an opener should recently. No-one does for that matter.
Guest ttfn Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Ok accepted but he just doesn't seem to come in with the consistant big scores an opener should recently. No-one does for that matter. Openers are not there primarily to get big scores. They're there to see off the new ball and lay a foundation for the innings - if they get a big score all the better. People talk about Cook's form suffering since he took on the captaincy but it can't have helped that he lost a long-term opening partner in Strauss and since then has had a revolving cast of players opening with him - Compton, Carberry, Lyth, Root, Bell and Trott have all been tried since Strauss retired and that was only about 3 or 4 years ago. Cook's not the problem (at least with the bat). It's the lack of runs coming from everywhere else. (That said his shot today was ridiculous).
purpleronnie Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Are we playing on the same pitch? I can't help but feel the Aussies were over confident for the first test, now have just stepped up a gear and i feel we'll struggle to win another match. Hope I'm wrong.

Well they've failed on both counts today, and in the 1st innings. Hoping for a big innings from Bell, he's due one. Either way it's damage limitation and a case of just trying to frustrate Australia for the fun of it now, can't see us getting anything now. As for what purpleronnie has said I said a similar thing to someone I know, I think Australia we're just lulling us into a false sense of security in the first test. Annnnd another one bites the dust.
FrankieADZ Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 i hope they make some change for the 3rd test, Lyth & Ballance seriously are cutting it,

Annnnd another one bites the dust. Cook batted for 5 hours in the first innings, it's not his fault if the next 4 give their wickets away. The idea that you're going to find 2 better English openers than Cook is absolutely fanciful. You might find one better than Lyth though so perhaps that's worth exploring.
RowlattsFox Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Ballance is a walking wicket at the minute. Got to credit the Aussie bowlers too, pace and disciplined.

Swarles Barkley Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Dont really follow county cricket. Who would be call up to replace lyth and ballance(less likely) if need be? Is james taylor an option. Looked pretty good the few times ive seen him play
Bobby Hundreds Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Time to give Hales a chance. Lyth isn't learning quickly enough. Our Ashes record at Lords is abysmal. 1-1, move on to grounds where we are more competitive. Edgbaston & TB are happy hunting grounds for us.
leicsmac Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Bairstow and Hales might be worth a look. As an aside, I think this match was over the moment the coin was flipped and Clarke called correctly. Lord's is not nice to teams that lose the toss, especially when the pitch is the way it is. Build a massive total and a team batting second has to put in much more effort to overhaul it than the team batting first, given sheer scoreboard pressure.
Corky Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Lyth was supposed to be the perfect choice, heavy run scorer for the champions Yorkshire. Beyond that I really don't know. Cook is badly needed, he's a world class player but we cannot find a suitable partner. To get rid of him would be suicidal, we haven't got two openers ready to come in and replace a guy who is 30 with 116 Tests to his name.
RowlattsFox Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Hales is probably next in line but his technique will probably get found out at test level. Problem is every team knows your weakness and the Aussie bowlers are good enough to bowl at it.
RowlattsFox Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 No real quality openers coming through from what I can see on the county averages. All the top scorers are either foreign or old. Tim Bresnan is 4th on the list FFS Problem is technique is getting lost due to everyone wanting to play T20.
brockmyster Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Hales in for Lyth for me. Bell needs to have a good innings here otherwise he's in danger. I'd be looking at Vince or Taylor for next test in the top order, Taylor with a bit more experience at the higher levels. Quite frankly the whole top order deserve shooting in recent matches apart from Cook.
katieakita Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 Basics, wouldn't expect an U10 to get out like that.
FrankieADZ Posted 19 July 2015 Posted 19 July 2015 its amateur hour in the cricket then, they go from brilliant last week to complete and have gone to utter tosh like under Moores What time is tea? about 5 mins i think, end of play is 6:30, it will be done by then
