Alexikokopops Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 at Davey Warner. As Geoffrey would say "I've seen more brains in a chocolate mouse". He went for "pork pie" today
leicsmac Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Warners room temperature IQ aside, this has been a pretty dead pitch to be bowling on. Think that matching their big first innings total and letting it peter out for a draw might end up being the way to go. Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong (please!) by a massive Aus collapse this afternoon, but...
James. Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Just read that England hasn't beaten Australia at Lords when bowling first since 1896.
CKB Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Pitch is dead, nothing in it.If we don't see a shedload of runs in this test i'd be shocked (watch England get bowled out for 50 now)
Bobby Hundreds Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Lord's test strips have been really disappointing over the past few years, this might be the worst of the lot.
Captain... Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Urgh, what a horrible days play so far, anything under 450 for the Aussies would be a result here. I just hope we can play well on this pitch bat the game to death and come away with our 1-0 lead intact a collapse in our innings and this will be a demoralising thumping. The pitch is flat, nothing doing, we just need to go out and bat on it when we get the chance.
Voll Blau Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Perplexing how we're putting so much effort into producing such lifeless pitches. In English conditions the Aussie quicks aren't going to be as effective anyway, and they're more likely to adapt to them as the series goes on.
fuchsntf Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Whoever decided on this pitch, has played into the aussies hands. The Aussies have 3 WC bowlers, who can get something extra from dead pitches.Plus they have a top spin bowler. We need, Cook, Ballance, Bell, to play the stubborn, but reasonable grinding out game, we know they can play. Lythe is still the unknown quantity, but with discipline equal to Rogers, and Smith, this can be his time to secure his place, beyond the Ashes series. If this is now the new England, then I am looking forward to alot of runs, taking this game to a forgetfull draw, collapses are just something old fuddy duddies can only remember.
Captain... Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 Let's see what the weather brings, talk of rain and clouds so hopefully a bit of assistance for our bowlers. Worse case scenario could be Australia come out attacking in the morning quick fire 200 then put us in under grey skies and take a few wickets.
Guest MattP Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 Pitch is a shambles, if it wasn't Lords I think the groundstaff would be in serious trouble. I didn't actually think we bowled that badly yesterday. just nothing at all in it, I don't remember seeing Buttler take a ball above chest height. Moeen is still a big problem for us, he can't seem to tie up an end not concede runs even when the pitch is totally dead, Swann would barely be going for 3 an over on this and would have got through 25/30 overs yesterday. The Aussies are going to work out soon if you don't do anything stupid he won't get you out. Think they should try and run up as many as they can, if I was Clarke I'd still be looking to bat all day today and try and get to 700.

Jury is out on Mooen for me, before the series I would have agreed with you but he does seem to have the Swann knack of taking a wicket as soon as he comes on, and usually a big scalp. The leaking runs is of course a problem but I'm honestly not sure if we have a spinner who can tie up an end in that way anywhere - Rashid is a great attacker but gives away a lot of four-balls. We miss Swann so much. Still annoys me that the selectors chose to give Kerrigan his one moment in the sun on a docile pitch with Warner thirsting for his flesh as I think he could have made the grade.
AKCJ Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 Yeah I think Ali's first test was more due to a bit of luck with the ball than outright skill. Still, he's the best we've got at the minute.

He only ever take wickets when batsman attack him, soon as they realise that he'll really dry up. Batsman don't actually need to do it either, he gives away enough four balls himself.

There's no spinner we have who can shut down an end the way Swann did, and while Rashid is probably more attacking I think he's looser too. The lack of a class spinner is a major weakness in our whole team tbh.
Leicesterpool Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 England's record against Australia at Lords is abysmal. When was the last time Lords was dropped as a venue?
surrifox Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 Australia really in the driving seat - someone needs to bat for about 4-5 sessions - Cook has the powers of concentration and so does Root but who else? - Bell can surely make a big score on a surface like this
Simmo86 Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 566-8 declared Now we'll see how big this new England sides balls are.
RowlattsFox Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 We need a long Alastair Cook bore fest, need to bat long and get out of here with a draw. I hope we show some common sense, I'm all for attacking intent but we need to play the situation.
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 I hope everybody is right who have complained about how flat the pitch is........
purpleronnie Posted 17 July 2015 Posted 17 July 2015 I hope we don't lose a wicket early as we usually do. Nothing stupid just boring cricket and we'll be ok.

I can't ever remember it not being used in a summer. We need a long Alastair Cook bore fest, need to bat long and get out of here with a draw.
