little Brian Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Nugent ? 5 goals & no assists ? loads of running though without getting anywhere near the ball .......sign him up again
gerrytaggart Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Just played for. I like Nugent but I he was never going to play at a higher level than top-end Championship / bottom-half Premiership. I'd hardly call him a good servant for having 4 decent seasons with us. What constitues a good servant to the club then?. Someone who has had 5 decent seasons with us?
Swiper Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Nugent ? 5 goals & no assists ? loads of running though without getting anywhere near the ball .......sign him up again 2 assists, actually. 3 out of those 5 goals were some of the most important goals of the season. GOTY against Liverpool is obvious. Huge goal against Everton. Crucial goal against WBA. Huth's goal in that same game doesn't happen without Nugent's chip over the top.
Lionheart Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 The aim should be to replace him. He's ok but we have numerous better attacking players, whether you see him as a striker or a supporting forward. We wouldn't miss him, he should be 4th choice striker now, if we bring in another he's 5th, Mahrez is better than him in the hole if we choose to play that way. If we're going in the right direction he should have very limited playing time and if he's not playing there's no reason to keep him. Let's get a true goalscorer in and bin Nugent and Wood. They're not good enough, we need to move on. This is right,Nugent and Wood done a good job for us but they are Championship players so move them on.

This is the kind of thing I can't stand, we're only where we are because of the efforts of players like Nugent, and now we're here you don't even have the grace to acknowledge that "4 decent seasons" is sufficient service.

Claridge Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Been a good servant to the club but I hope we don't see him much next season because that means we have a lot of injuries or the other forwards are having a mare
Wymsey Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 More of an 'impact' player. Often has cameo performances of around 20 minutes but can be a headless chicken, to be honest, the rest of the whole game.
Merging Cultures Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 What constitues a good servant to the club then?. Someone who has had 5 decent seasons with us?The whole notion that players are 'good servants' to clubs is ridiculous. They get paid a load of money to play football. It's hardly the greatest imposition on them. To say they are servants suggests that they are devoted, loyal and somehow give up something to play for us. Any player should always give 100% effort to justify their relatively large salary for the privilege of playing sport for a living. And any player would leave in a second to receive a higher salary. Just because there are no suitors willing to pay a player more money, and they play reasonably well for us for a number of seasons, doesn't make them a 'good servant'. Hero, no. Servant, no. A well paid sportsman who provides with a decent level of entertainment, yes. Arguably, Gerrard could be considered a 'good servant' of Liverpool. He could have left, earned more money and won more trophies. But I'd prefer to just say he was a fan of the club.

The label 'great servant to the club' was given recently in the Conrad Logan thread on more than one occasion. In fact, he earnt an awful lot of money by playing very little first team football. For years. I think he was very very lucky. The term is pretty ridiculous.
Jakemoore Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 Nugent must stay. He does more for the squad by just being around the place.
bovril Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 REALLY? This is the kind of thing I can't stand, we're only where we are because of the efforts of players like Nugent, and now we're here you don't even have the grace to acknowledge that "4 decent seasons" is sufficient service. Yeah, sufficient is the word. And calm down. By the way I like Nugent very much, one of my favourite players of the last 10 years. Basically what Baltimore said, the idea of 'servitude' is a bit much.
shailen Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 He's very much an instinctive striker. When he's had really little time to think he has scored some sublime goals and when he has a lot of time he scuffs a lot of chances. I think he has a lot to offer and let's not forget before Ulloa came into form against Swansea, people wanted to see him in our starting line up. The sad thing is he will always be made a scapegoat, but his work rate and attacking play make him a valuable member of the squad. There will be a time when we need him next season, I guarantee.
Swiper Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 I think something else about Nugent that people seem to forget is his versatility. You can stick him in essentially any offensive position from Striker to CAM to Wing and he can at the very least be serviceable and simply a pest. Sure, he missed more than a few opportunities this season, but he's still a valuable player. I imagine if he had the same minutes and opportunities next season, he'd have at least 8 goals if not a few more. Of course, I anticipate his minutes/games will go down a fair bit, but he should still remain a valuable player. Like Wymeswold said, as a 20 minute impact player, he can truly make a difference. Mix that role with an occasional start based on injuries or match-ups and there's plenty of value left there.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 7 June 2015 Posted 7 June 2015 We need to build & improve or we'll struggle. He's been well rewarded but time to move on! Stop living in the past! I agree with this. We HAVE to move on, and find that extra quality.
McFoxy Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 What constitues a good servant to the club then?. Someone who has had 5 decent seasons with us? Steve Walsh was the last player I would have called a good servant. Andy King may get there one day.
cc_star Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 For large parts of last season, his impact was helping everyone else play at a higher tempo. People on here saying Mahrez is better in the 'hole'? Really, I think Mahrez is far better cutting-in and in the middle he has too many players In the top flight, because of deep lying midfielders protecting the defence & who quarterback the ball up the pitch in rapid counter-attack, the actual 'hole' position is one that can require a very high workrate & isn't suited to an intermittent fancy dan. Nuge always looks full of beans too, a great asset to the dressing room. Whether he's 1st, 3rd or 5th choice forward, he's an asset that shouldn't be overlooked, you need 5 forwards to last you the season anyway!
LAprice_ Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 If a player can't be classed as a 'good servant' because they 'get paid a lot of money', that surely discredits any Premier League player? When trying to justify the loyalty of a player, I always refer to the U18 mid-week match vs Manchester City in which Andy King, David Nugent and Riyad Mahrez were all in attendance. They don't get paid to show-up and yet they still do. I just don't think it's fair to tarnish a player's devotion to a club because a huge pay check means it's expected. There's no denying that the players are on a lot of money, there's no denying that 100% effort and work-rate is expected but being a member of this squad is about so much more. Over the last few years, Nugent has lived and breathed this club, just like King, Konchesky and many others. Would he be the same if he was paid less? I'm not sure. But let's not forget that 'servants' can be well paid too!

Jon the Hat Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 You Nugent out types are SOOO small time. What possible downside if I there to keeping him? None. Possible benefit of letting him go? Save a few pounds? Who gives a **** - the guy is committed, adds something to the squad if not the 1st team every week. Unless he was pushing to leave we would be mad to let him go.
