In the UK, I feel because of it's past use, the terms Paki, Itai and Chinky are racist terms. I don't feel Jap is racist but nip is. Same goes for Frog and Wop, I think they are racist terms.  I don't feel Brit, or Swede or Dane are racist terms. What about Jock, Taffy or Pohms? However.having said all that and having seen the video: What a stupid idiot! Especially coming after Thailand a few weeks ago.

Funny how you say that we've got a Dutch kid in our youth group called Koen, pronounce exactly the way that some might find inappropriate! We have to be careful when sharing his name in a mostly Asian school.

If he is saying "Jap" and it is because he cannot tell this difference then is that like calling a "brown" person a p*ki? I'd suggest not because "Jap" isn't widely known as a derogatory term in this country, nor do I believe someone of Japanese descent would be that offended.

Saying that, if Vardy were to shout "Oi Jap" to one of our owners because he cannot tell the difference, I believe it wouldn't go down too well.

There are two ways to solve this. Either claim he said "Chap" and get the other players who were there to back him, or release a joint club statement saying that he was unaware the word Jap would cause offence and is deeply sorry for any offence caused, then send him to do some work with 'Kick it out'.

Problem solved.

The Thailand incident is a bit different to vardys,

They were on club buisness when it happened, took part in and filmed an orgy and then put it into the public domain. The racist slur used in the sec tape is also conclusive.

The alleged one on the vardy video isn't

Are you saying what Vardy said isn't racist?

Cmon Dan, you're smarter than this - it's not a case of one rule for us, one for the rest; Brit, Aussie, they're not used with malice or have any derogatory background, jap, like chink or paki, does (although in this case it's one most people will be ignorant of because it's not something we're exposed to).

I honestly do believe that there is no consistency in what's considered to be racist in society.

I personally wouldn't use the term 'Jap' to address someone because I know nowadays even the slightest reference to nationality / race can potentially go wrong but having watched the video, if he's saying Jap I'm honestly not sure he's using it in a derogatory way. How do people know he's not a regular in that place who's nickname is 'Jap' for example?

It's youtube. I could claim that Pantilimon should have been sent off yesterday and I'd be called a shit-cvnt cum-dumper on youtube.

True, true.

There are lots of terms I used to use which I wouldn't dream of using now. Chinky and half-caste being among them and Jap being another one which I only relatively recently learned was used with racist connotations. When you find out something is offensive to people on the basis of who or what they are then you'd have to be a complete arsehole to continue with the given descriptor or action. I know idiots will whinge about political correctness, but political correctness only means not being a dickhead. I can live with that.

I can well imagine that Vardy, if he has used the term, did so in ignorance without thinking he was doing the equivalent of calling somebody a paki or a nigger. In which case the best thing he could do is to apologise for any offence caused and not use such a slur again. Oh, and not acting a willy puller in casinos is probably a decent idea too.

I just hope it won't upset the team spirit, I mean I hope Shinji will still pass the ball to Vardy.

Unless he is an over sensitive reactionary pansy, then im sure he wont care.

The real world is not full of social justice warriors, unlike the internet.

Have the club said anything about this? Even just a "we'll look into it" statement?

They'll need to do a proper investigation, full video, witnesses etc. I just hope because he's a first team player he isn't treated differently to a reserve player.....

Think some of us are saying stop with the knee jerk reactions. You have people saying he used the term chap, sounds like chap to me but as far as you are concerned it is Jap because the sun says so, so it must be right. Sure the club will deal with this if they feel it needs to be addressed personally the drinking, gambling and loutish behaviour is more of a worry than possibly an ill informed ignorant comment
