Three central defenders anybody? (for now)

Even Ranieri himself, when he took over, said we were better last year with three at the back. Time to go 343 again.

Shmikes,

Wasyl, Huth, Morgan,

Albrighton, Kante, Drinkwater, Jeff,

Riyad,

Vardy, Shinji/Leo/Kramaric

Don't see the harm in trying but I very much doubt it will be the tactical panacea many seem to think.

We've done just as well against similar standard opposition playing four at the back this season as we did playing three at the back at the end of last season. If anything, I'd say we look more assured and more potent this year.

Last season we kept 5 clean sheets out of 9 with 3 at the back and still looked good up front. By contrast, this season we've looked very vulnerable at the back. We even conceded 2 v Sunderland after completely battering them.

Last season we were bottom of the table for half the season

People tend to always have the idea that 3 at the back is more defensive. It's not the formation that decides this. It's the playing style we have. At the moment we are a counter attacking team, where we sit back and break on teams. Going three at the back won't make us more solid at the back. If people think it's a genuine problem then maybe we need to cut spaces in between the defence and midfield to provide protection or even push up higher, but for me it's more to do with our mentality rather than the way we are set up. Because of the way we attack we are going to leave space behind if we lose possession and that gives the opposition the opportunity to break on us, which Arsenal did superbly today. They did what we have been doing to other teams.

I think what people are saying is that we will have more of a chance defensively with 3 staying back at all times, instead of 2. Our mentality or not, having that extra man at the back gives us more protection in any situation.

Walcott would have had less space that's for sure. We'd have been able to mark him out the game easier if we had that extra body staying back when we were higher up the pitch on the counter.

I think 3 at the back benefits Huth and Morgan a tonne.

However, I do agree with Ranieris thinking that 4 across the back is the long term solution because 3 at the back often isnt sustainable (eventually it will get found out).

But for now, Huth and Morgan arent suited to 4 at the back and don't have enough pace to play high up the pitch. I see Ranieris long term vision of 4 at the back, but we need a better, more athletic/faster center half to partner Huth for that imo. Until then, 3 at the back !

Of course going towards end of last season we stuck with just three at the back and at least we managed to keep clean sheets, at the moment our two full backs in our back four aren't working. De Laet can really be clumsy at times and Schlupp for me isn't a full back at all.

I miss Wasileswki.

If he is going to keep playing 4 at the back, which seems likely, i would replace Morgan with Benny or Wasyl, and replace Schlupp with Fuchs.

How Fuchs never even made the bench, after the way he played against West Ham, unless he was injured of course, is one of lifes mysteries!

Also right back, as many have said, is a real problem area for us, that should have been, but wasn`t addressed in the transfer window.

There really isn`t much to choose between DeLaet and Simpson, DeLaet probably better going forward, and Simpson possibly marginally better defensively, but neither one of them are good enough for the premier league in my opinion.

Come January, the right back position should be made a priority signing.

It's got to happen. We attacked and defended well in it last year even if it was only a run at the end of the season.

The difference is the organiser isn't there.

What's that got to do with my point? When we switched to 3 at the back with proper wing backs for the last 9 games we looked solid defensively (keeping 5 clean sheets out of 9) and threatening in attack. Our centre halves lack the pace to play in a 4, unless we try to pack the midfield to protect them, which neuters our attacking threat. Has to be 3412 for me.

Wasileswki wouldn't have added anything else yesterday. He wouldn't have been able to get close enough to Walcott/Sanchez.

We paid £5m for a  centre half in Benalouane who at least has the pace even if he can be clumsy at times. He needs to be given a chance although would prefer him in a three. With no central defenders on the bench (?why) we could not make any changes yesterday and bringing King on sent out all the wrong signals at half time. Neither Schupp or De Laet looked comfortable yet again.

Having said all this I though our first half was the best football we played this season and crucial moments did not work in our favour early on
