Another plane crash

Terrible news. It's worrying how planes are crashing more in this day and age when the technology available should be so much more reliable.

Possibly due to increased pressure by airlines to reduce costs in line with competition and therefore shortcuts.

I remember a conversation with an aircraft technician who said that very few planes take off with a clean bill of health and that there are always a few things wrong that didn't get fixed in time. Keeping a plane on the ground is far too expensive so repairs get given priority status. He said sometimes it could be trivial things like a loose seat or broken catch on a cupboard. When I asked what the worse thing he could remember, he just laughed and "you don't want to know"

Wouldn't be surprised if the Airliner had a poor past safety record, which is often the blames for these tragic events.

It'd be a severely impossible achievement if they find anymore MH370 wreckage.

The airliner involved in this crash is an A321, its only ever had 1 fatal crash and there are well over 1000 in flying service. It was a 20 yo plane though apparently and i've no idea what the airlines maintenance record is like.

Descended way too quick for anything other than catastrophic failure which would be really odd on an A321, especially since they've got Part 145 certification. Wouldn't be allowed anywhere near the EU if it didn't.

Sinai's a pretty nasty terrorist hotspot IIRC, my money would be on it getting shot down, should be avoiding that flightpath

IS don't have the missile launchers in Egypt like the Russians (allegedly) had in Ukraine to shoot down MH17, they only have hand held rocket launchers that can only reach about 15000 ft, this plane reached over 30000 ft before losing altitude. Could be a bomb on board I suppose but i'd go with a mechanical failure from what we know so far.

It's Russian, unfortunately their safety record is terrible compared to most. Horrible anyway, RIP to all onboard.

Statistically there are far fewer accidents than there was 20 or even 10 years ago, it's probably just 24/7 news that makes them seem more common.

Agreed. The media always report it as a big headline when it does occur too. Crashes on the road are far more regular but when there is an air accident you've usually got 200+ people dead at once.

See above. Accidents have always happened, it's just they are reported on straight away and in full volume.

The thread title "another plane crash" is a bit unfair, they are generally few and far between. And it's how you define "crash" too. I mean if this was shot down, or whatever, considering IS have claimed responsibility, then it's not a technical fault is it.

The people who are saying air crashes are more common when statistically they're clearly not are prime examples of how the media can influence your ideas and beliefs... It's a bit like the people saying that football transfers take so much longer and are more complicated than in the past! It's just the twitter boom means you get hear more about it rather than having to wait for teletext to refresh!

The above two examples are fairly innocuous, it's the sinister control of the media (or totalitarian tip toeing) that we need to worry about...

What are you talking about?

How the media can influence your thoughts on the world.

It's ridiculous how some people believe what is reported in the mainstream media. People come out with stuff like "well I saw in the paper that...".

Might be if they are new planes, many are decades old.

In what way are they lying to us? Plane crashes, whhen compared to the thousands flights per day across the world, are incredibly rare.

There's a video out there that Islamic state just released showing a plane being shot down by a missle...

IF this proves to be true and it's still a big IF for me as its not beyond ISIS to rehash an old video and claim it as theirs, then I can quite believe that they have picked on the wrong country. Russians don't care about international opinion or their image, they'll put everything into taking them out.
