If we get to 40 points (takes a deep breath) how do we approach each subsequent game?

Let us just suppose we do get to 40 points, what is our approach after that?  I would like to hope we would be the most dangerous side in the League as we achieved our aims and could go out onto the pitch and have a right good go at everyone.

I think we could do well with that approach. :D  :claudio:

My fear is that mentally, once the 40 point goal is reached, the players might switch off a bit, and the season might fizzle out somewhat.

Mentally all along, the goal has been one of survival and it can be hard to reassess the goals mid season.

Its a cliche, but its about taking each game at a time and looking to secure a positive result each time we play.

I thought about this earlier. Often see teams drop off once they have reached their target. However, the mentality of this team wouldn't do that. Our character and the spirit of a number of individuals we have in this team means we simply don't know how to slack off or be content with losing. I think we will just go on and play every game with the same intensity and finish as high as possible.

After winning today, It's the first time I have started looking upwards, rather than how big the gap is to the relegation group.

I will be absolutely horrified if we change our approach upon hitting the 40 point mark. If we do it just sums up all wrong with the modern game. Happy to make up the numbers if it means bagging the riches from SKY next season even though for the first time in bloody ages we look like we could actually upset the apple cart.

Thankfully I think what Ranieri said in pre-season about us wanting one more point than last season was just a nothing comment.

I dont think its so much a conscious effort to change something when the 40 point mark is reached, its just for me, it can be seen in a fair few clubs in past examples, like Charlton under Curbishley, Southampton (who tailed off but did still get a European place off the back of how the cups finished), West Ham last season, its just that mentally, players have goals in their heads.

When a goal has been reached, then the focus has to be readjusted, but its difficult. It feels like the goal has been accomplished, and its up to the manager and the character of the players to realise there is an opportunity to achieve more, to go further outside the comfort zone.

Id like to think the goals have been reassessed already. I think Ranieri was absolutely right though to keep expectation to a minimum in the summer though. Survival is a minimum goal but a significant one nonetheless and in the circumstances he took over in, a season of stability would have been good.

But im sure hes telling the players to keep their focus and performance levels up because they have a chance of having a huge points total.

The owners have made the level of their ambition very clear - Europe, and as quickly as possible.

That's probably an important point. Our long term players may have bought into that when they said it a few years ago, and have been working towards it, but if some players didn't believe it they certainly will now.

Europe will be in the back of everyone's mind rather than 40pts, if not now then very soon.

I don't think this squad will have any trouble motivating themselves to play to win, no matter how many or how few points they may have.

That's why I'd never bother with targets. Just try to win every game. They aren't paid money like that to sit back once they've achieved their supposed target of the season surely?

You are right that it has happened before though.

You do know 40 points doesn't guarantee safety? We would be stupid not to just keep doing what we are doing and I am sure that is exactly what will happen.

We have a couple of winnable games coming up and then a horrific December so there will be a slump at some point.

I think you'll see us begin to change our approach once we get to thirty points. Rainieri is fully aware that the style we play revolves very much around JV as a focal point re the speed at which we break forward. you must have a few different ways of playing and so far, we haven't needed to try them out. I expect to see us playing first halves in different styles in an attempt to become comfortable in them with a second half back to our usual one. I am very interested to see if he plays the 'big teams' in the same way as he approached arsenal.

We may tail off if this happens but not to the same extent as West Ham last year. With a few players looking likely to go to the Euros and possibly strengthening in January it hopefully wouldn't happened.

But anyway, we are on 22 points not 40 yet.

Nothing should change in the players and staff attitude. 40 points is the minimum aim and then we carry on to see where our ability takes us.

I think the best thing is not to look too far ahead and see what happens.Almost tempting to count the number of wins we need for safety but we need to remain more positive than that.We are now 200/1 to go down after being favourites 2 months ago but still 6 to 1 for top 4.

After the start we have had would now be disappointed if we do not at least get a Europa league spot!
