Penalty Taker

Mahrez is without doubt the best flair player that I've witnessed in a Leicester shirt but I don't understand the stuttered run up.

The stuttered run up should be used to surprise the keeper, once in every 5 or 6 penalties.

Mahrez does the stuttered run up every single time so keepers are prepared for it and don't react to his first skip. Moreover the shot then lacks power and speed - like taking a one step penalty in 5 aside.

At least with Vardy, he smashes the ball with speed and velocity so keepers don't have time to react, even if they know where the ball is going.

I would go with Fuchs or Vardy in future.

Fuchsing hell.

He missed a penalty, even Ronaldo and Messi miss em.

Move on.

We shouldn't just take pens off Mahrez because he's missed one. He should carry on until it becomes a bit of a problem with him finding the net from the spot.

I don't remember Southampton fans calling for several penalty takers in LeTiss days. In fact I doubt they'd have accepted any other taker even if the bloke was on crutches.

Didn't you just say strikers should take penalties? Le Tissier was an attacking midfielder.

So we're almost bang in line with the statistics?

yep :D.

Well, technically, 3% higher than the total penalties scored of 84.63%.

:D

1 missed penalty and It creates a thread like this. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Shit happens we move on

But FoxesTalk would never be the same without threads like this.

We should never have a set penalty taker, we should have 3 or 4 (say Fuchs, Mahrez, Vardy, Drinkwater/Albrighton) so that it doesn't become too obvious. It's only natural that players have favourite sides and the one time Mahrez did go the opposite way, at Everton, it wasn't particularly convincing.

That's a good point. Opposing keepers can't do their homework so easily if there's more than one potential taker. Also, the more confident person on the day would be able to step up if one taker feels nervous. Maybe that wouldn't work, cos pride might dictate whether a taker would be prepared to step down; it's just that, because nothing was going right for Mahrez today, I was convinced he was going to miss, and so were several fans around me. Would have been much happier had Vardy stepped up.

Don't like the stuttering run, especially as Mahrez is good enough to beat the keeper outright. Just pick a side and don't change your mind.

Would stick with Mahrez. Prefer picking a spot to just smashing it as hard as you can as Vardy does.

So you're saying he was so good he shouldn't take them, because he won't always be brilliant? That sir, is not a great argument.

No sir thats not what I'm saying.  What I'm (trying) to say is well placed pens with not much power will go in as long as they are always well placed, whereas a powerful shot in roughly the right area has a better chance  of not being saved even if its not always in exactly the right spot.  Personal opinion but in view of our lofty position perhaps more important if we want to finish top 4. Because of JV's speed, RM's dribbling skills, and our style of play we are going to get a good few pens this season and we must take advantage of that fact.  Bottom line I just don't feel confident with that type of stuttering run, placed pen ....   would prefer Vardy but there must be someone else who can confidently bang them in.

For info Mahrez has missed two now, the second being the Hull cup game which ultimately cost us

I know but still don't like that type of pen ....     bad for my nerves.

You can juggle the statistics all you like but at this level penalties have to be scored. If you look at it Boruc fell foul of the rules and to my mind the pen should have been retaken.

We proclaim ourselves "fearless" but pussy-footed penalties hardly convey that message.

Give em to a guy who'll blast em in and demonstrate that any mistake will be punished and that we'll walk away with the spoils first chance we get.

That penalty wasn't "fearless" and neither was the sight of Dyer looking like a little-boy lost and disorientated on the wing.
