Penalty Taker

Vardy is our centre forward. His principle purpose is to score goals, as many as he can. It should be his responsibility the same as Kasper's responsibie for saving opposition penalties. Or do people suggest Mahrez does that as well?

I've got a crazy idea, but just hear me out:

I think we should have our best penalty taker take our penalties. Sometimes, a team's best penalty taker isn't a striker.

I suppose I'm in the camp of letting Vardy smash a couple home.

He is bound to miss though, or hit it down the middle and let the keeper make an easy save.

Goalkeepers never stay put though. Down the middle is one of the best places to put it as you can virtually guarantee they'll have dived.

Not a fan of the stuttered run up either, always think it gives the keeper a helping hand for some reason. Gally was definitely the best penalty taker we've had in recent years, I always thought Nugent was going to miss with his slow run up, luckily he scored more than he missed. I used to love Dickov's penalties, he did that long, fast run up and normally tucked it in the corner except his final one against Man City which cost us a win. He genuinely looked ill after that one haha.

Personally I'd stick with Mahrez for now and if he misses again I'd go for Fuchs, he so cool I can't imagine him missing.

That makes it seem over simplified and completely devoid of skill. It's relevant that Boruc would have prepared to face a Mahrez penalty. It's relevant that Mahrez has done stutter to the right 5 of 6 times since August. It's not purely a game of chance. Watch Boruc fake right and go left for Mahrez. He prepared for what came to him.

It's still a guess though!! I'm not saying he didn't do his research.

Completely agree. There have been studies done on it as well I think. By far the best place to put it.

Seem to remember Lampard just going down the middle loads. Worked pretty well. Obviously you've got to mix it up to keep people guessing though.

I have to say I always feel more comfortable having a guy put his foot through it. Hate seeing pens missed when they are hit weakly.

Vardy would be on them for good for me even if he missed a couple. He wont doubt/second guess himself.

A bit off topic I know and I don't know if people on here have forgotten who our best ever penalty taker was in next to no time at all! He only left the club three years ago and to my recollection he never missed one for us. He had that eccentric initial back to goal then turn before striking the ball, something that worked every time  - the mysteriously underrated Paul Gallagher of course!

Ray Stewart, Phil Neal .....

Balotelli and Le tissier are/were natural pen takers and also strikers. Riyad and Jamie are not natural penalty takers. Riyad's stuttered run up is to try and give him an advantage over the keeper but a natural pen taker makes a stuttered run up look normal. riyad's looks forced.

if we have one in the side then we should utilise him. it might well be Fuchs. He didn't miss in his YouTube vid v gokhan !

If we don't then we carry in with whoever is most comfortable taking it which is going to be RM and then JV.

Mahrez did not look confident for that pen. Not all surprised he failed to score.

I'd like to see Vardy take them should he win them and Mahrez if it's won from something like handball of Danny Simpson somehow ever gets forward enough to win one.

Don't know why, just something i suggested on the way home from the game sat.

Mahrez doesn't even place them that well does he? His first against Everton were good but in the others he's relied on making the keeper going the wrong way. That tactic can be found out.

he put it into the side netting (aka literally the most perfect place for a penalty) vs sunderland, everton and stoke. to suggest he doesn't place them very well is off the scale mental. his pen on saturday was rubbish, shit happens. vardy's finish when 1-on-1 was rubbish too but we aren't going to tell him never to shoot again.

Well he didn't against Stoke so cheers for that bit of hyperbolic nonsense.

I still think he relies on goalkeepers going the wrong way. With so little power on his penalties he needs to place them perfectly or they won't go in and frankly I don't trust him to do that consistently because it's so difficult, particularly when there's pressure on a scoring.

These went low whereas Saturday's was half way up the goals, low definitely makes it harder to save. Having said that, keeper was miles off his line when it was kicked, should have been a re-take, is the linesman supposed to be looking for this?

Never feel comfortable when a player hesitates like Mahrez does. The recent one saved, the keeper had already stepped forward off his line before the shot was taken......ref watching Mahrez???

Vardy takes a run and hammers it. Keeper doesn't have time to cheat. My preference is Vardy.....I just expect him to score

When Vardy got up from the non call in the box last match......he grabbed the ball like it was his. Probably expected a call his way and I think would have insisted on taking the spot kick had the call gone his way.

You're using a sample size of one and you're accusing someone else of overblowing things?

In my original post I said "Mahrez doesn't even place them that well does he?" implying that, generally, I didn't think he consistently put them in the corners (which he needs to if they're to go in). I think he spot kicks against Stoke and his 2nd against Everton would've been saved if the goalkeeper had gone the right way.

Put it within 3 yards of a post and the crossbar and your peno will go in. I reckon Fuchs would be pretty boss, but I love Vardys pens. I'm sure we will score the next one.

One thing that annoys me is when a commentator says "excellent penalty" then you see the replay and it went about 4 yards to the right of the keeper a yard off the ground, but he had dived the other way. Terrible pen, lucky the keeper guessed wrong.
