The Weakest Link?

Recommended Posts

Posted

When you go through our regular first team 11 / 12,  imo we don't have a WEAK link, but who do you think is our weakest link?

I am naming 12 players because Ranieri regularly changes Ulloa for Shinji.  Please give each player a rating out of 10.

My ratings are as follows.

Schimeichel         7.5

Simpson              7.5

Huth                    8.0

Morgan               8.0

Fuchs                 8.5

Mahrez               9.0

Drinkwater          8.0

Kante                  8.5

Albrighton           7.5

Ulloa                   7.0

Vardy                  9.5

Okazaki              7.0

Therefore my weakest link(s) are Ulloa & Okazaki & imo this is the part of the team that needs strengthening in the January window.

Need a new striker and right back imo

Simpson is alright but the guy has no idea what to do with the ball when we have to go forward.

Other than Vardy we have relegation level strikers, its that simple...

Agree there is no weak link but weaker areas are up front/number 10 (someone technical and physical - not easy I know), right back (Simpson can defend, RDL can attack, neither can do both) and long term back up for CB.

Ulloa and Okazaki have not stepped up to the mark this season. I hope with Vardy out for a match or two they will man up and show some determination to show they are worth their signing fees and huge wages. Kram is another one who should man up too. It's pretty obvious he is doing nothing to impress Ranieri in training because he's always behind the other two in pecking order and neither Ulloa or Okazaki have set high standards this season. Ulloa has been clumsy and Okazaki seems to feeble to be a high quality P/L striker.

I'd also give a rating of 8 to Albrighton. He's worked his socks off all season and has put in countless high quality crosses. He has stepped up and shown his worth.

Kasper - decent premier league keeper, has pros and cons to his game. 7

Fuchs - a great signing and looks very good in majority of games 8.5

Morgan - looks more solid than he ever has been 8

Huth - not what he was last season, still decent. 7.5

Simpson - fairly limited but does what is expected of him most games 7

Albrighton - decent player, just a shame he does not have more pace 7

Kante - best player in the team, what makes us tick. he plays well even when the team does not 9.5

DD - been very good this season, although has a few stinkers - 8

Mahrez - 13 goals and multiple assists speak for themselves - 9

Okazaki / Ulloa - on the whole poor. 6

Vardy - 15 goals, need i say more. 9

The weak link is that it looks like there's no Plan B. Bringing in another quality striker would help immensely. And it never hurts to bring in more quality, so competition at RB, CB 2, and the wings help.

Pretty much spot on, I reckon.

No. 1 priority is clearly a forward. Whether it's a number 10, ideally tall (the average height of the team is too short and needs addressing), or a decent target man, we need better than Ulloa/Shinji/Kram have been this season, and this is the glaring weakness of the 1st XI.

After that, I don't think any area seriously needs strengthening very urgently.

2nd and 3rd priorities should be RB and GK, I think. I'd try to find a RB as good as Fuchs. Simpson has been much improved this season, and he's doing a good job, but he's still one of the weakest areas of the starting line-up.

Scmeichel's okay, but there's no decent backup. Ideally, we'd get an upgrade, but then there's a danger that Kasper would want out. Maybe if we could get a younger keeper with potential, KS might be pushed to improve on his weaknesses more. I don't know. He could get complacent if he knows there's no danger of him losing his place. I'm guessing, of course. Just a theory. I think it's important that there's at least 2 good GKs, anyway.

After that, I think we probably need better backup for Kante and Drinkwater. Inler hasn't impressed, and as much as I like King, I think we might be outgrowing him now.

Am i the only one to think Simpson has earned the right to be one of the first names on the team sheet? I think he's getting better and better the more games he plays and i would not be surprised if he went all the way. Hes still young and has his best years ahead of him.  For me he's a great prospect.

Simpson. The clear weak link by far.

He's a **** for what he did but I thinks that's a bit harsh, if he was a loveable character like Kante or Fuchs he'd be hailed as a great player.

it's so hard to be fair abut who's weakest. I don't think any of the 12 are particularly weak and especially when judged against what we've been used to in recent seasons.

To pick two I suppose there are five contenders: Kasper, Simpson, Albrighton, Shinji and Ulloa.

a) Kasper I mention because he's indecisive at times when dealing with crosses and not really big enough to be as commanding as his father. But he's usually a good shop stopper, his concentration is sound, his handling reliable and there are few goalskeepers more involved, encouraging and demanding of good concentration and high stanards. So, despite being a goalkeeper who's not exceptional like Banks or Shilton, I'd retain the bloke anytime for the sum total of all his pluses which is considerable. East to replace? Technically maybe but not inspirationally.

b) Simpson: The improvement in our defensive solidarity since he replaced DeLaet is unquestionable. He's strong, reliable, rarely skinned, maintains good positions and has both the concentration and determination to finish his job. On the flip side he sees the halfway line as something of a boundary fence and therefore appears limited in terms of our tactical options. Easy to replace? With our purse I would think so.

c) Albrighton: Mr Reliable 7/10. Most valuable as a maker of goals and for the amount of defending he gets in to go with his crossmaking. For me his crosses are too non-descript - I like em fast, furious, high or low and with a bit of spin or flight. His tend to be too medium paced and that bit easier to defend. He does shoot occasionally but not enough and not all that convincingly. Not known for driving himself to reach anything loose in the box. He's not an aggressive defender but does enough to play his part and usually quite soundly for a winger. Easy to Replace? Years ago I'd have said yes. Good crossers were 10 a penny. Not quite so easy now but we've got the funds to do it and get someone faster and a bit more tricky.

d) Shinji: Is he a striker, a midfield player or just Mr Average at both at our level. He's willing, energetic and committed, no question and he can shoot technically. But he's not a great tackler, not a great dribbler, not especially strong in the tackle, not special in the air, not that quick not that anything really. East to Replace? Not from the Far East necessarily but otherwise, yes, I think so.

e) Ulloa: I don't altogther understand the hammer he gets. He's not pretty, not deft and subtle like Peter Osgood or Teddy Sheringham but he's a bloody nuisance for most defenders. He's already shown he can register double figures in goals and when playing regularly has the touch and intelligence to make goals himself or the selflessness to make space so people can score. He's not lazy in trying to do the dirty work, just ungainly and a bit limited when forced away from his natural habitat. Our only attacker with any aerial capability to speak of. East to Replace? Yes, with the money available. In fact we might get more for the outlay.

So - the weakest links for us?

None really. All are important with our current squad make up and until we have better alternatives and cover on the books I wouldn't want any of them gone.

Simpson is playing well but we're assessing him based on his previous performances and reputation for a side chasing a European place he's not a good enough long term option

It's all about 'Synergy' baby. We're second in the league because the whole team is greater than the sum of its parts.

Surprised at anyone now saying Simpson. He's been one of our best players over recent weeks, no doubt.

Ulloa is now the weakest link in the first team IMO. He doesn't look like a top of the premiership striker by any stretch of the imagination. How he's playing he looks more a lower Prem or dare I say it, a top of the championship striker.

Simpson stands off his man so much and expects the winger to make the tackle..

He even jockeys them to the point where the opposition can just walk with it into the box ffs.

Even though De Laets positional sense is awful he at least put himself about and got a foot in.

Both need upgrading!

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, as De Laet could potentially be a good defender at this level under Claudio's guidance. But is De Laet someone like Vardy, who will push himself to his limit and work tirelessly on the training pitch to improve? Because that is what it will take...

lol some on here are like my mate who I go city with,

they hate simpson that much, if world war 3 broke out, it would be his fault.

Not convinced the hate towards him is totally football related, he is an average player, playing well, but I think because of some of his past off field behaviour, some will never like him.
