@tom27111 my wife has suggested we start looking for a new car.

We've got two boys a 3 & 1 yr olf & a spaniel too, we don't do crazy mileage sub 10,000 per annum.

We've got a hyundai i30 and looking for an SUV/estate. We've got upto 20K max for a used car any suggestions?

Get a pretty decent VW Touareg 3 litre diesel V6 for that.

Have you got any preferences? Personally I’ve not long bought a Mercedes C Class estate and I wouldn’t consider another. I’d lean on 3 Series estate or something.

After a 5 door automatic for below 17k. Has to be Reliable, a nice drive, not particularly big, nippy but still reasonable MPG rates.

Quite like the look of the Golf GTD and the Polo GTI (2018-19) plate. Anyone have any experience of them? Cheers

I've realised this afternoon that I have gone from being someone who loves driving and is up to date with all the latest models of cars, to someone who has competely lost interest really, and has no clue what's around any more.

We need to start looking at replacing our 2014 Renault Captur, and we want something at least the same size or bigger, and similar, SUV style.

@tom27111 I'm looking to you for some advice on Renaults if you've sold them recently?

I've seen the Renault Austral which looks lovely but it's a hybrid and I have no idea how they work really, much to my shame, I've always been a petrol girl. I know it's the Kadjar replacement so maybe one of those would be better if they've come down in price? We do lots and lots of motorway kms driving all over Spain and Portugal, I don't know if that should influence our choice?

I also like the look of the Alfa Tonale , and the Mazda MX5. Whatever we have needs to be fully keyless entry and start, are they all like that these days though? I don't want leather, but I do want automatic, I think all the Austral's are though.

I don't think telling you my budget will help as 2nd hand car values in Spain are crazy compared to the UK

Fvck me I sound like a proper woman driver, it must be my age, or the move to Spain, I dunno but I need some help please!

I don't know a lot about the Renault's to be honest. You definitely have different specs out there to what we sell in the UK.

I probably should know more about them as they share platforms with Nissan, who I now work for.

The Arkana might be worth a look? I think they're sized between the Captur and Austral.

A Nissan Juke would be very similar to the Captur, but look at the 1.6 hybrid as opposed to the 1.0 auto. The standard auto has a horrible DCT gearbox which is really laggy and jumpy.

The Qashqai is really similar to the Kadjar. An N-Connecta or Tekna would be the spec to look at as they don't have leather seats. The E-Power engine on them is brilliant. Literally just sold a brand new one to my sister-in-law today.

It's a hybrid, but a different type. Fully driven by electric, but has a petrol engine that acts as a generator. Really smooth and quiet, plus good on fuel.

I never got to drive the Tonale as I left Alfa before it arrived, but it looked stunning, of course it did, it's an Alfa!

MX5 wise, don't think I've ever even sat in one, but worth looking at the Fiat Spider and the Abarth version too as they're built on the same chassis. You might get better value with those brands.

Hopefully they have upgraded aircon and no leather to be seen lol

Yeah my husband had a look at an Arkana earlier and the outcome was 'fvck me you can't get much in the boot'

I think we spoke about this before, and looking back this may have been about the time I had given up on keeping up, I had never heard of it I don't think, but if I let my heart rule my head it's what we will end up with

But now you mention Abarth, maybe I'll reconsider the Alfa

Oh and apparantly when I said MX5 I meant CX5, see how out of touch I am? I did wonder when you mentioned the Fiat Spider, and I'm guessing now that there isn't an Abarth SUV. Might have to sack off the big boot and more space for the teenager idea, leave her at home and get a trailer for the sportscar lol

Too many options has made the market difficult to fathom out.

I used to buy a new car every two years and once I went four years as I couldn’t be bothered to work it all out. It just got too complicated.

Most companies like to reduce their number of items sold to cut costs, but for some reason the car manufacturers have been hell bent on increasing them but this has just brought confusion.

Saw a lovely Audi yesterday, but there are so many variants of them that you will struggle to know what they are unless you take a picture and go on their site.

The days of the Fiesta, Escort, Sierra and Granada have gone. Easy to identify, easy to know what you liked and then it was just about the trim levels

Having ridden motorcycles since the age of 15, cars have never really been significant or important to me beyond the functional. I drive a battered 13 year old Astra 1.8 SRi and couldn't give a shit. The only issue I've ever had with it other than general expected wear and tear, (such as track rods, brakes, bearings, etc), was a few months after I bought it. The previous owner had done an appalling job spot welding the ring gear. - and it failed, which was expensive. Had to bump start it everywhere until it could be fixed. It's a bit of a nail now, but I've meticulously looked after the engine so it just goes on and on.

There was an issue recently though. It started cutting out, particularly in the middle of sharp bends or when I flung it into a corner or roundabout. It seemed electrical not mechanical per se, but in addition to the possibility of an erroneous sensor, (crankshaft?), or alternator or it could equally have been the EGR valve, throttle bodies, an issue with the fuel pump...the list is endless and the process of elimination an exhaustive rabbit hole. Odd that this usually happens when you come off the throttle but this wasn't the case. It would restart immediately, which lead me to consider the ignition. That then made me realise that I drive with the key attached to a very hefty and weighty bunch of keys. So just as I do with my bike, I removed the key prior to putting it in the ignition. 1,000 miles later and it hasn't happened again. Clearly over time, the barrel had become worn and the weight of the keys and the swinging key chain was triggering the immobiliser. Sorted.

It's always roadworthy but a bit of a clown car now - in that it's showing its age. I intent to run it until it stops, but resent spending money on something that I don't really want or have any interest in. I should, because there are far better cars on the market in terms of the environment and if it doesn't give up altogether that may sway me first.

**** this, on to the 'motorcycles are brilliant' thread.

I absolutely loved cars as a kid. Whiled away many hours on my bedroom floor making engine noises whilst moving my matchbox collection around. If I won the lottery one of the first things I would buy would be something very fast.

That said, I drive a 57 plate golf with 107k on the clock and unless it fails me (electrics most likely) I doubt it'll be replaced for some time.

I don't know what I will do when I have to either, I drive less and less these days and live in a flat so electric may be a struggle.

11 hours detailing the wife's car today :o

Pre wash, 2 bucket contact wash, iron & tar decontamination, clay bar, machine polish, and then applied a 3 year ceramic coating.

Polish the glass and protect tomorrow plus wet sand, machine polish (where she's curbed them ) and ceramic coat the alloys.

I'll then defy anyone to find a 7 year old motor in better nick. It'll be absolutely mint.

Jeeez that sounds rewarding and painful at the same time lol I can totally appreciate how you feel when it's all done and perfect.

Side note, take possession of  my 2024 Subaru Ascent on Thursday.  First new car ever. Wasn't my ideal purchase but we were looking for a larger suv that was bigger than a honda CRV but not massive. Also, we have a massssssive problem in ontario with stolen cars targeting models like honda crv, honda pilot, honda passport, Toyota highlander, acura rdx. Essentially any car I was interested in for the family. Insurance rates are insane on them so subaru was our choice.

Looks like I will be getting into the detailing game. About to be overwhelmed lol.

Wow that is full on dedication. My wife moans when it takes me 2hrs to clean my car! I hope you charged her accordingly

On another note - has anyone got an VW ID3 that is about 2-3yrs old? Good/bad? Battery still holding up?

I'm Looking at options around and found that ones 2-3yrs old with relatively low mileage are quite affordable. I have an SUV and as I do 90% town driving, I wanted something smaller than still fits he kids , and is not a diesel as I really don't need one. Some garages doing good deals (even VW themselves seem good). Im skeptical as to why, is it due to supply as loads are ending on leases/finance deals or is it due to them being a little crummy?

Any other recommendations welcomed. Also looked at the Niro (old model) as an option, but Kia APRs and pricing seems higher recently.

Nobody wants to buy EV's. There's a complete surplus of new vehicles built and ready to go, but no takers.

At Nissan, we're doing brand new cars half price, on 0% finance and still nobody will take them.

If you do take one on a PCP, the only way to get out of it is to hand it back to the finance company at the end of your term. You'll always be in negative equity.

I've seen people put down a 10k deposit and still be in 8k negative equity after having their EV for 3 years.

There's no incentive to own one, no more government grants, no more charger grants, they'll soon have to pay road tax, the price of electricity is also the same as fuel.

I like EV's and have really come round to the idea of them, but there's no point buying one right now.

Getting tied in to a finance contract on one will financially cripple you.

Do you think this is likely to change in the near future, new incoming government and all that?

The plans I've seen from Labour don't give me much hope but they haven't released their manifesto yet so one can hope.

I've recently had my 3 phase connection (already have solar) completed so I would definitely give it some thought if the incentives were there.

Thanks for the insight. I'm guessing the only way to win that game is on lease, or get second hand until it dies, then be out of pocket.

I won't be putting a massive deposit down, so you have made me think. Good post @tom27111. Nice to have an inside opinion.

Would a hybrid be a better option?

Any new government will need to add incentives to make people switch to EV's, the market has totally died. I've got a three year old top spec Nissan Leaf in stock, we're retailing it at £12250. It's only got 12k on the clock.

The vast majority of customers I speak to, completely scoff at the idea of buying an EV, the most common thing I hear is: "The infrastructure isn't there, I would even consider it".

Manufacturers also need to price them in line with ICE vehicles.

Away from EV's, the government need to urgently look at the 'luxury car tax' threshold.

Any new car with a list price over £40k is subject to £600 road tax for the first 5 years. It's ridiculous. They haven't reviewed that for around 5 years. A new high, but not highest, spec Qashqai is coming in at over £40k now and people are walking away because they don't fancy paying an extra 2 grand to the government.

Something needs to be done to get the economy moving and getting people to spend money.

Sorry but electricity is not the same price as either petrol or diesel, unless you are forced to use public  charges. I've saved in excess of £2k in fuel costs since buying my Nero EV.

The constant negative reporting in the press of EV is what is driving the current relatively poor take up, most of which is just lies, not helped by those selling them by the sounds of it.

If you have no other option but to use a public charger, you make no saving.

And believe me, I'm paid a lot better for selling EV's than any other car, because manufacturers are desperate to move them.

EV's also depreciate faster than any other vehicle on the road. After 3 years, their value will have at least halved, this isn't the case with ICE cars.

We're seeing a lot of customers switch back to to ICE having taken a considerable financial hit on an EV.

The vast majority of people you are selling to though will have off street parking and can therefore make very large savings on their fuel costs.

Whilst I obviousley cant comment on your personnal experience, it does not reflect the national picture where the latest figures show that EV sales continue to increase market share, all be it a a slower pace that previous years.

The vast majority of people that I'm selling to have major concerns over long journeys that they make regularly.

EV sales are down year on year at the moment, only really being propped up by businesses using them for the tax incentives. Private sales are way down.

Globally, Tesla sales are down 36% on the same period 12 months ago. That's a huge decrease.

I don't know what will happen in the future, but right now, getting tied in to a finance contract on an EV won't end well.
