Charged: Tony Wadsworth and Julie Mayer

Two BBC Radio Leicester presenters have been charged with alleged sex offences against children.

Tony Wadsworth and his wife Julie Mayer who live in Broughton Astley have been released on bail to appear in court in May.

Veteran presenter Tony Wadsworth, and co-presenter Julie have not been presenting their regular show since early December.

A spokeswoman for Warwickshire police said in a statement: "A couple from Leicestershire have been charged with child sex offences against four children, aged between 11 and 15, between 1996 and 1999, in Atherstone, Warwickshire."

Tony Wadsworth, aged 68, of Old Mill Road, Broughton Astley, has been charged with five counts of inciting a boy under the age of 16 to commit an act of gross indecency and one count of committing an act outraging public decency.

Julie Wadsworth, aged 58, also of Old Mill Road, has been charged with seven counts of inciting a boy under the age of 16 to commit an act of gross indecency and one count of committing an act outraging public decency.

They are due to appear at Warwickshire Magistrates' Court, based in Leamington Spa in May.

A BBC spokesman said: "Tony Wadsworth and Julie Mayer remain off air.

"We understand the charges do not relate to their conduct or position at the BBC.

"This is an ongoing criminal process and we cannot comment further."

Numerous fans of the presenters, as well as well-wishers and other listeners, have been asking where they are and expressing concern for them.

Thought tony Wadsworth was the housewife's  favourite. Let's wait and see before judging. I am not a fan of him or RL TBH so it would be easy to jump to a conclusion.

Wow, are they the ones who presented the really crappy treasure hunt program on the Sunday morning?

I always used to say how bizzare and weird it was, so I'm really not surprised.

Yep. All the old ladies I used to work for used to love Tony, they'd be shocked now.

Looking back to when I was 14, if I had been mucking around a golf couse and I saw a couple at it, it would have been a right result.
