Conversation with a Man U supporter

I had a fun conversation with a born within 110 miles of Manchester Man U season ticket holder last night about next season.

Went along the lines of you lot (meaning LC) will struggle next season.

Why?

Well because you will, you'll be battling relegation again?

So you think we will finish below Man U?

For sure, guaranteed.

Even though we finished 15 points above Man U this season?

Yeh, that was a fluke.

So you think Man U will manage the top 4 next season.

Of course, we have Mourinho.

And what difference does that make?

He'll have lots of money to spend.

So Van Gaal didn't? What happened with his £235mn?

Mourinho wins things?

Like at Chelsea last season?

Pause

So if Man U makes the top 4 who else will be there?

The usual teams plus Liverpool.

So that makes 5?

No, Liverpool for the top 4.

So we are looking at Chelsea, Man C, Liverpool and Man U as top 4?

That's about it.

What about Arsenal - never fail to get the top 4 and runners up last season?

No, they'll get 5th.

Don't you think the league is getting more competitive? How about LC, West Ham, Spurs, Southampton, Arsenal maybe even Stoke having a go? Its not like the good old days when teams would roll over for the likes of Man U.

It depends if they keep their top players but we (Man U) and Chelsea with hungry new managers will be looking to buy most of those.

I ended the conversation with I think it could be a 10 team EPL chase this season rather than a return to normal service and when was the last time 3 teams have won the Championship after Man U?

I am just amazed at the expectation of simply buying success is so strong with the big team away supporters. I put it down to its hard being a Man U supporter at the moment. Success it seems can bring unhappiness.

I'm looking at the fixture list

And I'm 100% sure we are in top 4 we keep the team together and add a few more to the mix, with a bit of luck we could be challenging again.

The 'big' clubs still don't get it. They see last season as just being a blip.if we hold onto JV and RM then that should give them a clue as to how the ground maybe changing. You can only field 11 players. Shame that koeman jumped ship for Everton but perhaps that's simply him thinking he needs a bigger audition for the barca job.

Manchester United need a whole new squad. Don't expect Mourinho come in and win stuff straight away. Chelsea need rebuilding too, as do Liverpool and perhaps even Manchester City.

The pressure is on Guardiola 100%, more than any other manager in the league. He's expected to win everything.

We can go under the radar again. Honestly to retain the league would probably be better than winning it last season. Do I think we'll win it? No. I don't think anybody does, even on here, but why can't we do it again? A full season - at any level - is not a "fluke". We've got our squad, no rebuilding needed, we just need a few additions to strengthen.

But your post there OP is just the mentality of the modern day 'big club' fan. Just because they bring in a big manager and spend loads of money on good players they think they'll automatically win everything. I'm still waiting for Manchester City to get anywhere near the Champions League final after nearly 5 years of spending millions on overrated players each season.

LEt's be honest, we have no chance of being top 4 again next season. I'd take 7th/8th right now, especially if we lose the big 2/3.

I had a similar conversation with an Arsenal supporter who started off by saying that they didn't want Vardy because he wouldn't suit their style and then dismissed any possibility of us being in contention next season .

When I suggested that if the same team that had just won the league by 10 points started the first game of next season ,we would be in the top three at least ,his response was 'well ,you won't keep your best players'

Not only was there the usual big club condescension ,but e genuine resentment that we had gate crashed their monopoly and wish for us to be put in our place .

what, even less of a chance than 5000-1?

Let's be honest we had no chance last season.

Let's be honest, if they live around here and support one of the big clubs they're just a glory Hunters and not a real fans. Their opinion is worthless.

What a strange and inaccurate comment.

If we kept our best players we'd have every chance of top 4.

Anyone saying otherwise is a bit of disgrace tbh. That's the sort of thing I'd expect 'big club' wankers to come out with to try and put us down.

100% agree.

Anyone saying we have 'no chance' is a plastic. It all depends if were able to hold onto the 'holy trinity' - and then build on that. I appreciate things can change very quickly in football, but at the moment next seasons starting to look nicely set up!

IMHO, how well we do next season all depends on how seriously we want to take the Champions League vs Premier League - with big PL games before the CL games, we can't always put our best possible team out for both, so which do we prioritise? If we go for the CL, (which, IMO we should), then I doubt we'll do anywhere near as well in the PL...  Not that I'll complain with a top 8 finish if we do well in the CL :)

Man United fan is an idiot....in other news, water is wet!

The Champions League will have a massive impact on us this season. Whether we have the same players as last season available or not the extra burden of the CL matches will make it very difficult for us to finish top six. For me we'd need to improve our squad considerably to be pushing the more established top clubs. Also we will be seen as a big scalp when we visit places like Hull, Bournemouth etc. and this wasn't the case for most of last season. I'd be quite happy with 7/8th and to get to knock out stages of CL. An FA cup triumph would be nice.

thats what you get talking to a 7 yearold..

Yeah I'd take 7-8th place. But I think we can definitely do better than that. As long as other clubs believe the more money you spend, the more success you're going to have, we'll be fine and up there somewhere. Especially during the start of the season we should be able to do fine and we showed character towards the end before.

Well I did say especially if we lose our top 2/3. But Kante is gone. He's worth 3-4 places minimum. The old top 4/5 are going to be back, or at least most of them. They all have top managers now. West Ham, Everton and Spurs will progress. To say we can finish above everyone again is misjudged if we're honest.

I'm just being realistic. Last season was 5000-1 for a reason. It was impossible.

Let's not kid ourselves it can be done again - you'll become so miserable when we've languishing in mid table come late September.

If i'm wrong i'll watch the first MOTD of next season in my pants. And stream it on here.

Manu fan's probably correct, mid table is where we are, give it a couple years and we'll be fighting relegation while manu stay top 4.

I'm pretty sure that the club will prioritise the PL over the CL. We are guaranteed approx 50 mill from the group stages. If we get a kind draw, we could limp into the knockout stages. There isn't too much dosh to be made in the knockout stages. We are very unlikely to get past the quarters.

However, just think about us making top 4 next season. Another bumper CL payout of at least 25 mill. and those players who are going to give us an extra season. Maybe they can be convinced about staying longer. And targets we have will suddenly see us as potentially consistent CL qualifiers.

Keep the squad together. Add some quality. And then target top 4 as we try to defend out title.

added conundrum is if we finish third in our group and Claudio thinks we could win the Europa league!

This team isn't used to losing. Start the second well and no reason to believe we can't carry on with the dream.

Why would you give a man utd fan any sort of credence, unless you live in Manchester you only pick them for one reason. Funny, i work with 90% with man utd fans at work, as i relocated from London to north for love interests, it amuses me how many of them claim to have been season ticket holders at some stage (without me prompting this), but aren't now. It is as if they tell me this to back up their claim they are real utd, and not like the other 98% on the planet who have never seen them live and in the flesh. It's as if they are embarrassed, at least there is pride in not supporting wankers like them.
