StanSP Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 Ain't those drinks been in the media for their unhealthy amount of sugar in a bottle probably just what was flavour of the month at the time. makes me think of all the things the Daily Mail have said can cause you cancer: http://www.anorak.co.uk/288298/keyposts/the-daily-mails-list-of-things-that-give-you-cancer-from-a-to-z.html/
Beliall Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 Pre-packed salad is a nightmare. Goes brown on the drive back from the supermarket half the time Peaches and avocados piss me off because I like them but they're usually rock hard for a few days, ripe for about 2 hours then straight to mushy rotten mess. stick it in the fridge when its ripe. keeps for days
Sharpe's Fox Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 People who eat tomatoes like any other fruit are either Italian or just plain weird.
VLC86 Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 I eat a fair bit of fruit and veg, sometimes about 10 portions a day I think. Smoothie in the morning normally with an orange, banana, spinach, Kale and all sorts of other grim stuff that looks rank. Then for lunch I normally have 3 bits of fruit, salad and some meat then usually some meat and veg for dinner. I went on holiday in December and ate/drank that much shit I was really ill over Christmas so decided I would be healthy, lost a stone and a half since then through my diet and going to the gym 4/5 times a week so doing pretty well. That said, pretty sure the ozone layer has thinned a bit in Countesthorpe over the past 7 months.
VLC86 Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 People who eat tomatoes like any other fruit are either Italian or just plain weird. Mate until you have eaten fresh Italian tomatoes, not a euphemism, you won't understand. I'm not a fan of them here but they are seriously good over there.
Fox92 Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 People who eat tomatoes like any other fruit are either Italian or just plain weird. tbf I am weird. I've just come back off holiday and fresh tomatoes abroad are beautiful, but I still eat them just as much over here. Love 'em.

A single serving of so-called healthy fruit juice has been found to contain the same amount of sugar as three-and-a-half doughnuts or 13 hobnob biscuits.
Webbo Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 Apart from beetroot or swedes I'll eat any veg. I love my greens.
Countryfox Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 I love mushrooms. Are they a fruit or a vegetable ?
Sharpe's Fox Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 Are they a fruit or a vegetable ? They're a fungus you reprobate.
Countryfox Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 They're a fungus you reprobate. Bugger !! ... Your too bloody sharp for me sharpy.

Guest Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 I used to be awful at getting adequate fruit and veg. Always made the mistake of trying to use them as a substitute for the addictive food that taste good. But if you force yourself to give up pizza forever and replace it with bowl of salad then you'll hate life and suddenly dying of diabetes at 38 doesn't seem like such a bad prospect. Since then I've discovered that simply adding fruit and veg to your current diet (whatever it maybe), without deliberately removing the crap stuff, is a much easier transition. At the very least you'll be getting the proper nutrients, and eventually you get filled up on proper food you start to lose your appetite for the junk.
Izzy Posted 12 July 2016 Posted 12 July 2016 All joking aside for a minute, I had my large intestine (colon/bowel) removed about 15 years ago. I had a temporary ileostemy bag for a while and then re-constructive surgery to form a j-pouch from my small intestine. Not pleasant and I wouldn't recommend it, but the surgeon said my diet could have been partly to blame as I never ate any fruit of veg. Back then I ate loads of spicy food, smoked, drank loads and didn't exercise - a recipe for disaster. Now I focus all my attention on making sure my kids get a healthy/balanced diet and don't end up going down the same route I did. If I had my time again......

Sorry for your experience, but glad to hear you're using it positively to shape how you raise your kids. I grew up in the era where we were all still a little naive about processed foods. Expecting a casserole from a box to be just as healthy as the homemade casserole your nan used to make. Added to that, when you're young you can 'get away' with eating unhealthy - or at least the side effects don't show up quite so prominently. It's not until we're older and feeling the consequences that we realise 6 pints of stella and a dodgy kebab doesn't make for a very good meal.
Vardinhio Posted 13 July 2016 Posted 13 July 2016 I try to mix it in with food I like, the gf insists on it. Last night I had chicken breast with sweet corn and green beans. I think the key is to have a nice marinade or sauce with it all. I don't care for either sweetcorn or green beans but when mixed in to the overall meal they taste of very little. I love peppers and make an effort to include them in most meals too.
foxoffderby Posted 13 July 2016 Posted 13 July 2016 I am making a aloo gobi with mutter today which translates to potatoes and cauliflower with peas vegetable curry its very nice.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 13 July 2016 Posted 13 July 2016 I think I'm right in saying that nutritionists would actually recommend we eat something like 7-8 portions a day, but they haven't made it official advice because people would just say piss off to that and not eat any, which I think would probably be true
