Is the hangover over?

Recommended Posts

It seems we've found are fight and we are looking more like last seasons Leicester. With that said and the fact that the run up to xmas is pretty desirable, anyone else of the opinion that we can challenge or top 6?

Top six - ten and knockout stages of the champions league most teams our size would take that as long as we remain competitive and be in every match. We look like we are starting to get some form and I hope that once the champions league is over we can really progress in the league

The "hangover" was just the fact we had an abysmal pre-season full of rubbish corporate obligations and we started the season knackered and out of practice.

Moreover, we signed a record signing on deadline day with no time to work him in to the team.

Harry Redknapp was on the radio yesterday, Danny Baker show I think, saying that it's much better to play lower league or non-league teams to get fitness and confidence, than it is to play in those kind of games.

I think top 6 is probably out of reach for us - even at this early stage of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if the current top 6 stays the same (in whatever order) and then there's the likes of Man Utd and Saints not far behind. So realistically 9th or 10th for us I reckon - which wouldn't be a disaster in my book. If we can also qualify in Europe and have a decent FA Cup run then I'll be very happy with that.

Yeah I'll admit it was a shite joke, yet somehow it was still better than your pointless reply.

Won't be any league games to play when we finish in the Champions League.

He's right. Those long-haul, pointless friendlies did for Chelsea, Man City and United last season too. Every single club owner knows they are bad news for the team but they'll keep taking the dollars on offer.

The tv companies offering top dollar for these games are as much to blame. Because 10 months of watching top level football from around the world isn't enough we have to fill another month with it too, because Sky have an empty schedule in July. I can honestly say I don't think I've ever watched one of these pre season tournaments apart from the Leicester games

Yeah, got to agree with that. The way Sky built up that International Champions Cup thing was pretty laughable. It is big bucks for clubs but if you're a player you'd much rather play a friendly in Boston, Lincolnshire and be back in time for tea then travel 5000 miles to play in Boston, USA and be massively jet lagged when really all your doing is building up your fitness. It's actually nuts when you think about it.

I just wish some of the clubs had the balls to put logic before money but I realise that in a game driven by money and sponsorship that's never going to happen.

There was no hangover. we had to chose a point in the season to not drive in 5th Gear, and choose our fights wisely. Given our game schedule it probably was the best time to do this. Now we're nearly through the Champions League Group, we can take off the handbrake, and playing like we mean it.

I agree though our fitness and stamina was impacted by a shit pre-season, and we could have been better prepared, as it showed in our first 5 games or so.

It's crazy when you think about it though. It's a quick buck and quick exposure. Playing a normal preseason and having a good season would have given us more cash and more exposure than swanning off to the States and Sweden for a couple of games ever could. You'd think having seen the effect it's had in the past on some teams that someone at the top would have reaslised it could affect us and the most important thing was being ready for the real money maker, the actual season. Competing for trophies on a consistent basis it what will get you huge sponsorship deal, not pissing about in LA with PSG, it's amazing the people who run these clubs can't see.

The next couple of games will answer the question definitively but the last few performances we have looked like the team from last year. Bit of a shame it's taken so long because we could have racked up a few more points, but at least we are on the road to recovery! The defence is tighter and Okazaki and King are now supporting Drinkwater immensely. Against both Spurs and Palace there were long spells when we seriously had our mojo back.

Potentially with our fixtures between now and Christmas we could have qualified as group winners from our CL group and be in the top 8 of the Premier League. We've run the gauntlet of all the big boys other than Man City so if the boys are not complacent, we could put together a decent run.

The boys just have to make sure they don't take anyone lightly. Got to work hard and graft every game - that was the real key to winning the title.

Hopefully another four or five games playing like we have in the last couple and we'll find ourself around 8th-9th, the current top seven are what I'd expect although I did think West Ham would compete on a similar level to Everton (still time).

If we can find ourselves around 7th by Christmas then have a bit more momentum for a consistant second half of the season (albeit hampered by the African Nations Cup), remembering the others can't all win every week and will nick points off each other, we could well slip into 6th, 5th or beyond. Which of the top six or so are we better equipped than? They all look daunting at times, maybe Spurs or a self combusting Mourinho at Utd look more surpassable than the others (Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea). Strap yourselves in it's going to be one hell of a ride.

I think it had to do more with winning the league.  By the end of the season emotional and physical exhaustion had to play a role with so many of our players.  All of them where unaccustomed to the grueling pressure and work rate of the title.  Not unlike what happened to Chelsea the year before.
