How do YOU define a Leicester 'legend'?

None of the current or recent squad have achieved legend status yet but the following will, I'm sure

350 apps, one club man, top scoring midfielder of all time, won 3 leagues with the same club, played for us for ten years, captained the club, imo it's insane how anyone could think king isn't already the single biggest leicester legend of all time, let alone "not achieved legend status yet"

Not the best, but an iconic moment.

@AKCJ summed it up pretty well for me on the first page

On reflection, he is a one off.  Despite still being an active member of the first team squad, I'll allow Andy King to deservedly have legend status.  He has arguably been the greatest servant to the club ever, especially given his consistent performances and effort even through the darkest of days.

players player of the year twice and young player of the year too. championship team of the year a few times as well i think.

not many players in history surely to have played for their club in officially their lowest ebb and stepped out on the pitched nearly 10 years later to become a champion of england? legendary stuff like.

I think that the first criteria is for a player to have played a significant part of his career here and become synonymous with the club like Walsh and King.  As much as I love Cambiasso he is an Inter Milan legend not a Leicester legend.

In my lifetime - Wallington, Lynex, Lineker, Walsh, Elliott, Lennon, Izzet, Claridge, Heskey, Vardy, King, Mahrez, Philpott.

(can you spot the odd one out?)

The word legend itself relates to stories passed on from generation to generation. A legend for me is a person(s) at the centre of that story.

Us winning the league is a story that will be passed on from generation to generation and spoken about for years to come.

Whilst some players who played small roles maybe forgotten over time, those at the centre of the story will remain legends forever.

Kapser

Morgan

Kante

Drinkwater

Vardy

Mahrez

These are the players in 30/40 years will be the centre of the stories we tell.

From the past players such as Lineker, Walsh, Birch, Claridge, Weller, Chandler, Rowley and Banks will continue to be spoken about for the contribution to our club.

There will be others, no one has so far mentioned Graham Cross best part of 500 games for the club, but I can't think of a single story I have ever heard about him or anything special he did in his time.

Hmmm  the PFA player of the year? in a year that Leicester City miraculously won the PL title? .. oops ..

We get it. You're in love with Mahrez.

Give this 'you lot don't appreciate him' routine a rest eh? We're all well aware of what a talent he is and how lucky we are to have had him play at our club.

Yeah, Izzet. He was shit.

time will tell if anyone is considered a true legend.

if people are still talking about kante in 40 years time then he'll be a legend.

i'm a bit too synical to consider footballers heroes anyway, let alone legends.

Many gave their opinions .. why did this opinion upset you in particular? .. You have written me a very nasty comment before this when I wrote favorably about Musa ..

Some posters regularly tell us that 'Mahrez is dog shite". Why didn't you tell them to 'give it a rest'? Or is it a one-way street?

If you think you can intimidate me or silence me, think again ..

Btw, MahrezMagic!!!!  is legend ... again and again ..

Legend

NOUN

  1. a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated:
"the legend of King Arthur" ·

  2. an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field:
"the man was a living legend" ·

    ADJECTIVE
  1. very well known:
"his speed and ferocity in attack were legend"

    Simples

A club legend must have an affinity with the club- it needs to be a mutual relationship. Kante didn't show us anywhere near enough respect to be considered a legend, despite how good he was or what he achieved here.

Schmeichel, Morgan, Drinkwater, King, Vardy, Mahrez certainly are- they've been here since we were a middling Championship side, all showed the club a lot of respect, some turned down big offers away. They will always be remembered fondly here.

I don't know if there is a consistent formula for legendary status but my list would include the following

Banks

Worthington

Weller

Birchenall

Shilton

Lineker

Lynex

Tony James

Steve Walsh

Matt Elliott

Izzett

Lennon

Claridge

Heskey

Then nobody until April 2014 but since then I would include everybody involved in the great escape and our Premier League title.

Strikes me, the entire notion of a 'legend' appears to be highly subjective and arbitrary. It also seems to depend upon the era that you identify with - which is odd. I never saw Chandler, Cross, Stringfellow, Sjoberg, Gibson or Rodriguez play but it baffles me that they haven't featured on any of the supposedly definitive lists on this thread.

Club Legends, Walsh, King, Lennon, Izzet, Heskey during my lifetime as a fan. Maybe a few others, but that's just a quick list of the top of my head.

Legendary Status due to last season, pretty much all who played a part, but I'm not sure they will go down as Club Legends in the same way, I think there is a difference, someone like Kasper who has been here for a number of years, must now rank up there with some of the great goalkeepers we had, but Danny Simpson, no offence danny, is never really gonna have the same affection people have for, Banks, Lineker, Shilton etc.

And going off topic in a way, But if people think Kante has already taken the gloss of by leaving, do Vardy and Mahrez go on to carry Club legend status if it turns out Mahrez was just a one season wonder for us? If Vardy never lives up to what he did last season, again due to the goals and the record,he has a place in folklore, but a great over time?

Last season will go down as a legendary team not unlike the '66 England World Cup team where I don't think they are all individually of legendary status, I cannot see myself at this point thinking that someone like Simpson is an LCFC legend.

I don't even think it's about those that stick in the memory as I can easily recite the early 60's team but I don't think of then all as legends, i guess age and early games can cloud the issue as they are often more memorable but it doesn't make them legends.

Then you have the cult hero's which can include players that weren't so great but gave it there all like Coatsworth plus the more humorous heroes like Ormandroyd Iwan Roberts.

I guess there's never going to be a definitive list but I did start a whole series of threads sometime ago on perceived legends by members of the forum

Legends of Leicester City Football Club.

  • Post your memories of the Legend here!
  • Post your best moments relating to the Legend here!
  • Post anything you want to say about the Legend here!

  1. Steve Walsh
  2. Muzzy Izzet
  3. Matt Elliott
  4. Ian Marshall
  5. Keith Weller
  6. Steve Claridge
  7. Gerry Taggart
  8. Frank Worthington

Some of which seem to have gone missing

The 15/16 team was legendary, the players will all be fondly remembered, but not all will become legends in their own rights.

Kante should be praised and fondly remembered for his amazing contribution to the team, but he isn't a legend himself.

It definitely requires longevity at the club as well as success on the pitch.

It didn't upset me and I'm not trying to silence you. I'm merely stating that you're banging a drum constantly that, for most, doesn't really need banging.

I don't tell them to give it a rest because i dont trawl through FT looking for what you would perceive as 'anti-Mahrez' statements to comment on. Unlike yourself. I saw your standard Mahrez post and commented on it as you are free to do with my reply should you wish.

Andy King has been with us for so long now and has won the Permier league, Championship and league one as well as scoring a number of goals and made hundreds of apearances for us yet i am sure lots of supporters will not count him as a Leicester legend

Jamie Vardy has scored twenty goals in a season and has the premier league consecutive games scoring record so must be considered a Leicester legend

A Leicester legend is someone who has made an exceptional contribution to Leicester citys success by being outstanding and contibuting or has become a cult figure amongst the fans and is regarded by them just as highly as more decorated players

I judge a legend based upon his personal input over a long period of time. They should be few and far between IMO and not be given that title because we won a trophy.

Kante was immense but to me not a legend. I know he was amongst 15 or 16 players who guided us to our biggest ever achievement but he wasnt here long enough. Its the same with someone like Cambiaso. It was fun whilst it lasted but they werent here long enough to be given legendary status!!!

Players like Steve Walsh who was with us in some dire times and also some amazing times would sit high in the Leicester legends list for me.
