Rubbish Football Team Nicknames...

Recommended Posts

I'll probably get ripped to pieces for this, but last night i was talking to a friend about nicknames and i realised how crap ours is. Obviously i know the history behind "The Foxes", because of Leicestershire being a prominent foxhunting county. But that's exactly why its a poor nickname. We're named after the prey. The weak ones who get ganged up on by rich toffs on horseback and their dogs who rip the poor defenseless (Appropriate this season, to be fair) foxes to shreds. Has this ever crossed anyones minds before?

Are there any other teams who's nicknames don't make any sense?

Love The Foxes.

Hate 'The Dons' for MK dons. Only one really Dons and thats Wimbledon.

Monkey Hangers for Hartlepool is great.

I'd never heard of that before, so i've just had a quick read up on it. quite a disturbing history behind the nickname, and the club mascot, H'Angus the monkey. H'Angus was actually elected as mayor of Hartlepool in 2002. crazy!

I like the Foxes. I think only Cruzeiro in Brazil have the same equivalent nickname so it's pretty unique in world football too.

Remember reading in Fossils & Foxes that several nicknames were considered for us when the local press started coming up with them back in the day - including 'The Knuts'. lol

Yeah but Cruzeiro have a MUCH better nickname than fox.

La Bestia Negra. lollol

I don't think that requires much translation.

Ilford FC are also nicknamed The Foxes.

The one that initially springs to mind is "The Cherries" not sure how that came about,

can't be arsed to find out tbh.

I've often wondered if our nickname has ever been used in a song or chant, I can't think of one if it has.

Aren't Juve called the Killer Lady too? That's a good one.

Always like the Flying Donkeys for Chievo after hearing the story behind it.

Come on then, enlighten us!

Got some mates down south who started following Hadley FC after Barnet moved. They're called 'The Bricks'.

Hate the way Birmingham are always referred to as 'Blues' like they're the only team ever to wear that colour.
