Vaz's plan for "giant football" monument to Leicester City title-winning heroes

Keith Vaz MP wants to see a giant football installed on a key city roundabout to honour Leicester City's 5,000-1 Premier League title-winning heroes.

The monument would be built on Belgrave Circle as part of a new 'gateway' to the city's Golden Mile if the Leicester East MP had his way.

The giant Leicester City champions monument could be built by the old Belgrave Circle Sainsbury's site which developer Henry Boot has drawn up plans for.

Mr Vaz put forward the suggestion as he surveyed multi-million pound plans to redevelop the former Sainsbury's store site in Belgrave with a complex of shops, restaurants, flats and a landscaped public space.

He praised The Golden Mile Gateway scheme of developer Henry Boot as a "great vision for an area of our city that has stood derelict for far too long."

Mr Vaz described it as an "ambitious and visually striking gateway" to Leicester's famous Golden Mile.

But added that, in his opinion, there was one thing missing.

"In the middle of Belgrave Circle is where we need to put a giant football to signify the success of Leicester City Football Club's glorious 2015/16 Premier League campaign," he said.

"People will come from far and wide to see this giant structure and marvel at our football club's towering success."

Mr Vaz would like to see the "names and faces" of title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri; stars Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and co.; chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, and "all those involved who made this happen" inscribed on the monument.

He said: "It will be a fitting tribute to all the players, staff and club as a whole who brought a little magic to our great city and will stand as a testament to the wonderful achievement."

Developer Henry Boot has drawn up plans for the site, off Belgrave Circle, which Sainsbury's vacated in 2013 in favour of a larger new store on the former GE-Thorn Lighting site, in Rushey Mead.

Mr Vaz was instrumental in the creation of a work of public art – The World Tree – at the Melton Road site.

Unveiled by House of Commons Speaker John Bercow last March, the five-metre high steel sculpture has a map of the world at its base showing where Leicester's diverse population has come from.

Its branches are filled with bronze light bulbs as a reminder of the former GE-Thorn Lighting factory.

Sainsbury's paid for the £62,000 sculpture on that occasion, and Mr Vaz said he will be contacting the retailer's senior management, along with the city council, to drum up support for his latest idea.

The original plan had been for a 30ft 'Leicester Lightbulb' made from stainless steel, however, it was ditched when city council bosses realised it could cost up to £850,000.

More than 100 people attended a consultation event held at The Peepul Centre, in Orchardson Avenue, Belgrave, to learn about the plans for the former Belgrave Circle Sainsbury's site.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to Leicester City Council by the end of April and, if approved, the development could be completed within two years.

Henry Boot is also consulting on plans for a restaurant and employment units on part of the GE-Thorn Lighting site next to the Sainsbury's Leicester North store.

The proposals include a restaurant, and retail and employment units.

Both schemes could create up to 600 jobs.

The washing machine man is bent as fvck but this is pretty cool. Surely the statue should be in the centre of the city or at the ground though?

Would be magic if it happens, Such a shame it would be remembered as Vaz(aline)'s brainchild. I'd still want at least on at the KP Stadium though.

Let's not mess around, let's go all out! I want our very own angel of the north lol

Make a huge statue of this and stick it on Old John overlooking the whole of Leicester lol

This.

It's shameless self gratification posing as doing something for the City from Jim.

I agree with an earlier poster, if we are going to go all out do it, big trophy on too of Old John lol

Wants to put it outside his washing machine store the cheeky git

Why should he be involved in this?

Yes, a Leicester MP but sounds like a plan for his own way to get more on his side after the press releases of him.

Rather have something near Victoria Park where it's a more popular area and anyone can access or see it from a long distance.

Prefer Filbert St where the old ground was turn it into a piazza with seats and places to erect food and beer stands for fans to meet up before the game

Let's have one massive ball on a roundabout somewhere in Leicester! lol , how many people would get injured trying to climb on top of it!

I think he should build a statue of a giant washing machine

Look... we need a nice big statue of claudio and wes holding the cup.   Whatever happens to wes and claudio that  was a moment that unites us all and that the people if leicester  will never forget.

The club should pay (they won big money) and the mayor should put it up instead of the clock tower..... this is the biggest thing ever for leicester. ... who wants a clock tower

This is exactly what should happen. Have a huge monument built on the old filbert street to symbolize that Filbert Street was our foundation for going onto winning the biggest prize we could ever dream of. A place where Leicester fans could meet before the game.

Better than a bloody car park anyway

Where does he want to place the statues of the Eastern European rent boys? Morrison's Car Park?

Filbo still looks like an absolute disgrace. It's shameful that no one's stepped in to do anything about it.

The owners that own the land are apparently ignorant, with local residents in the past complaining about the amount of rubbish thrown in the area and them not doing anything about it.

Then the council should compulsory purchase, seeing as it's been a derelict shithole for the best part of 14 years.
