Quarter Final In Japan

Hi all.

 

I'll be in Japan for both legs of the quarter final, so I'm looking for some advice from any Japan based fans on where to watch the games.

 

I'm thinking there'll be plenty of sports bars/pubs etc but because of the time (5am?) I'm also thinking there might be a lack of good transport, so I want to keep it fairly local to where I'm staying.

 

1st leg Ikebukuro, Tokyo.....2nd leg Higashiyama, Kyoto

 

Any help, tips or advice will be greatly appreciated!

For a horrible, horrible moment, I thought UEFA had announced all quarter-finals were to be played in Japan.

Perhaps a letter to Shinji at the club may be a better way to go. Who knows you may get an invite to his parents for one of the games.

That would be as bad as PL teams  potentially having a final '39th' league game in Asia..

Hi mate,

 

Roughly this time a couple of years back I was finishing up my travels with 3 months in Japan, so I can shed a bit of light on your predicament.

 

In Tokyo, you will have no issue finding a sports bar in your area - many will stay open for the Champions League as alcohol licensing is far less strict in Japan than the UK, meaning that bars can stay open; moreover the Champions League is incredibly popular over there (as is Leicester City because of Shinji), so the first leg will not be an issue at all. 

 

However, Kyoto is a slightly different story. As the most culturally rich, historic and spiritual places in Japan, there isn't really much of a bar scene there. While a few bars will be open until midnight-2am, there definitely won't be any open at 4.45am when you want to watch the game. Fortunately, there are a couple of solutions;

 

1) Japan has the second highest bandwidth limit per person in the world, meaning that wifi is ridiculously good. Find a decent streaming site and have your laptop ready, making sure you wake up in time to catch the game! I did this a lot while I was there and the connection was far better than when I've had to stream football matches in the UK.

 

2) Make a slight alteration in your plans in terms of where you'll be for the second leg. Your comments regarding transport are false; Japan's transport system is the best in the world by a country mile - trains are literally never late, they're regular and if you have a JR pass, you can use the Shinkansen to get to another place at 330km/h. Osaka is only a short journey away from Kyoto and takes roughly 45 minutes by standard train, or 15 on the bullet trains. Osaka is larger than any city in Europe and has an absolutely buzzing nightlife. Many sports bars and clubs will be open specifically to show the Champions League game. So, if you don't fancy streaming, get a late train over to Osaka from Kyoto, have a few beers, enjoy the wonderful food, watch the game, then head back at around 7am when it finishes!

Thanks for all this, and what a great idea for the 2nd leg! I really fancied going to Osaka so I'll definitely be spending a night out there now. Could be an epic one! My transport query was really to do with the Tokyo metro stopping at midnight but from what you've said I'll be able to find something fairly local so this shouldn't be an issue now.  Great stuff, thanks very much!
