Blimey lads, it's just a nice excuse to thank doctors and nurses. Can't see the problem with that?

I don’t see what a bizarre birthday has to do with thanking medical professionals (its not just doctors and nurses you know). We could easily thank them without it and often do. My wife regularly used to receive cards or gifts whilst working the wards. It’s a very strange landmark, did I miss the 60th birthday or did we not appreciate them then?

But it's not really. It's an excuse for politicians on both sides of the house to try and say they love the NHS more.

It's no criticism of the NHS itself, or the doctors or nurses.  It's the need for a public celebration of a 70th birthday.  You wouldn't get a big deal like this in France or Germany and they have better health services than we do.

Politics will eat itself even more than it already has when we have a national NHS day.

OK, apologies for the "doctors and nurses" thing - was just thinking in shorthand. I think there were 60th commemorations, though I don't recall what they involved. If people want to mark an anniversary like this, they will. If they don't, they won't. Mass public outpourings aren't really my thing, so I can't claim to be overly fussed myself.

Politicians in "jumping on any bandwagon going" shocker.

I just think it's a bit much for people to start saying it's "tinpot" or a "state religion", when the reality is it's just a nice excuse for normal people to collectively say thanks for care they've had if they want to. We're hardly all being cattle-prodded through the streets singing "There's only one Nye Bevan" are we? If it helps healthcare staff feel a little more appreciated, then what's the harm?

I’m not saying people can’t celebrate it or anything else, I’m just saying I don’t see it as a landmark. I was the same with LCFCs 120 year anniversary, I don’t get why it’s more significant as opposed to 119 or 121 years.

Don't get me wrong, nearly all are thankful for care that they or a loved one has received in the NHS.  I thanked the doctors and nurses at the time and always made a point of doing so.

I'm just bemused by what is in my mind a strange oddity of a celebration.  Granted, if people want to say thanks, I don't have an issue with it.  I just feel that it's political pomposity rather than an actual celebration by "normal people" to say thanks.

Pretty much everytime a politician speaks about the NHS the point they make is preceeded with a "our amazing NHS staff" or something similar, we don't need a birthday celebration to do that.

Maybe we could just have a NHS TV channel for those who want to watch it, show all the live marches for pay increases, maybe a gameshow where we have 100 random migrants who have came into the country and the public have to guess which five of them don't work for the NHS.

Last night they were trying to break some singing record, it was like a combination of a Labour party broadcast and the X-Factor, ghastly stuff.

Whatever side you're on this is getting embarrassing.

David Davis says May's new Brexit customs plan is unworkable

I hate these misleading Guardian headlines.

If you read the article he’s not actually quoted as saying it’s ‘unworkable’. I’m fact he’s not quoted as saying anything at all.

It's all so negative in the Guardian. Almost like they're willing it all to go wrong.

Much easier to be positive when you ignore business, economists and the 'experts' I guess.

Have you tried the Express? Very uplifting experience. That is unless you're worried about heatwaves, cold snaps, Romanians, Diana, single parents, Brussels bureaucrats, quislings, remainers, socialists, anti-semitic socialists, money-grabbing socialists, baby-eating socialists, Muslims, Soros, bankers, Muslim bankers, exploding phones, ebola, health tourists, Corbyn's terrorist friends, feminists, hollywood, the cosmopolitan elite, stabbings and Londoners who drink expensive coffee instead of tea.

But they're super positive about Brexit, so knock yourself out.

I'm absolutely willing it to go wrong.

Call it petulant, whatever. But **** it - everything is pointing towards it being a disaster.

For those of us who don't want it, don't want it AT ALL and want **** all to do with it - the only silver lining will be when it does go wrong and we can have some lols and chuck about some sexy little 'I told you so's'.

As I've said before - I'm planning to be long gone by the time the negative effects kick in (even more so, properly) but I won't hesitate to look back across the sea from my perch and chuckle at people suffering at the hands of their own stupidity.

Absolute gutter attitude to have but what can I say - I'm bitter about it, so whatever.

haha, always brutally honest man, you know me - I can't find any false enthusiasm for this shit, it's a farce.

and once I find my happy place man, you're always welcome to come and visit and take a break from post-Brexit Britain there. :)

It is what it is mate.

I actually voted Remain but here we are. All I really care about now are politicians (cross party) trying to work together and do the best for the country and it's people.

I'm still positive and optimistic that we can all make it work but that's just my naive default setting in life anyway :)

Well they do say that optimism is a learned behavior mate. As humans we're 7 times more pessimistic than optimistic apparently!

Here's a link to a book I read about it that you'll probably never order lol

Hilarious to see all the rightists blowing their top when they see the British celebrate a genuine Marxist construct. For as long as the NHS exists there will be a left presence in British politics and they can’t stand it lol

Keep taking the tablets; they may cure you.

if you voted for it and it's shit then you deserve it, imo.

i'll obviously have plenty of empathy for my bros who didn't want it and couldn't make it out.

I hope it goes wrong too, I only voted for it to annoy people like you anyway and it will, still definitely annoy you lot more than me if it does go wrong.
