Yeah some deserved 'salt' too - the Under 23 teams have no place in this competition. Glad there's just 1 team from the Under 23s remaining. This competition is about giving the likes of Oldham success and coverage they couldn't otherwise achieve except in their division.

its a competition that those clubs wouldn't field full teams in if they weren't required to do so

In not a too dissimilar way to how Premier League clubs treat the FA Cup. Then when it hits the quarter-finals the strongest teams are selected. There's a reason why still generally the strongest teams in the third tier win it. 

 

It's similar to the FA Trophy. You wouldn't deny a fan of non-league a day at Wembley because Yeovil Under 23s and Bury Under 23s have been positioned into it. Clubs pick weak sides but it captures the imagination of the fan.
