Slightly concerning, I mean it's alright and all it's for charity, the match itself is only a friendly too but where does it end? I'm sure having Prince Harry in the team could raise some decent fundage, same could be said of Ant & Dec.

It could also raise concerns as to who actually picks these squads, there we heavy rumours of Nike involvement and other parties to do with the Brazil squad dictating to their manager who to call-up, I don't see why this couldn't be possible with England going by the long run of favouring certain clubs players.

Really though I liked the idea of Rooney's time with England being fin, whether it be Kane or Rashford up front they deserve the game time instead of an over the hill Wazza

I know he's publicly supportive of the idea but I can't imagine Southgate is too pleased with it, especially given his comments this year about looking for a fresh cycle of players and for younger forwards to come in. The likes of Glenn Murray and Callum Wilson probably aren't all that impressed either.

It's fairly obviously a promotional exercise and it's great that his charity will benefit but it's a strange move given that his last game was two years ago and it's not a privilege that's been extended to any other England player. Leave the fundraising to charity matches and reserve proper international matches for those who deserve to be involved in them.

"You're denying a young player a chance", said Shilton, who played for England at the age of 40 ;)

Perhaps Shilton should have said this denies a better player an England cap, who will also be younger. At least Shilton was still a regular for a PL club when he won his last cap.

This selection will have had nothing to with Southgtate who has he tricky job of fitting Rooney into a team of players at their best when playing at pace. If Rooney has to get a cap, hopefully he will come on when there is only a few minutes left. That way, Rooney gets applause when he comes on and England can build on the game v Spain.

Just had an email  - Be there for Rooney's 120th cap

England v USA: Honouring Wayne Rooney

The FA announced yesterday that Wayne Rooney will make his 120th and final appearance as an England player at the England v USA match on Thursday 15 November.

The fixture will be called the Wayne Rooney Foundation International in support of the legend’s charitable interests.

To celebrate a career that started with the England U15’s and spanned three World Cups and three European Championships, tickets for the match start at just £25 for adults and £10 for juniors.

I don't see why it's not just Support his foundation why give out caps for what amounts to a Charity Friendly?

Looks like it's not intended to be a one-off, given it's called A Wayne Rooney Foundation International.

I'm not comfortable with England matches being used in this way.

If you want to do a charity game/testimonial, do England vs a Rooney XI (so, players he played with for England - likes of Ashley Cole, Gerrard, Lampard etc.) rather than buy his way into an actual England match.

Hope we pull our players out of this.

What a farce.

Rooney absolutely should be rewarded for his services, but not like this. Players like Scholes, Rio, Beckham and Gerrard should be playing in this game.

I’m going to wait and see how it plays out before condemning it, but at the moment I’m not convinced it is the right thing to do. If this is a sanctioned friendly that counts towards fifa ranking then we shouldn’t be pissing around with Wazza, but on the other hand he is having a reasonable spell in the states so it is not like he is washed up as a player. We’re not talking George Weah turning out for Liberia despite being long retired and president of the country.

He won’t be an embarrassment on the pitch, maybe he’ll only play the first 10 minutes and then get subbed, or the last 10. Maybe having him around will inspire and motivate some of our young lions. Or maybe it will just piss people off who knows. I don’t mind England trying to inject a bit more interest into meaningless friendlies but not at the expense of the integrity of the national side. If you’re doing a testimonial or farewell match then call it that.

The Times now reporting that none of the money is actually going to the charity lol

Seems so - the FA probably need the money themselves now the proposed sale of Wembley has fallen through!

Feel sorry for Southgate. First England manager since Venables to give us a team with a bit of hope & he has this fiasco sprung on him. He must be silently fuming.

MLS season is nearly over. An England 11 picked and managed by Lampard versus a Rooney MLS 11 in a charity friendly. The yanks would go nuts for the recognition, it would make a bit of cash, nobody gets their nose put out, all good.

Anything like that would work - for sides likely to qualify for major championships like England, friendlies actively harm seedings (think I went through the maths of it during the world cup, but even beating top 5 ranked nations in friendlies lowers your coefficient), the only value in them is trying out new systems and players. This should be a game where Southgate looks at what Maddison, Gibbs-White or someone else could bring to the squad, or works on a plan B with some proper match time. Rooney won't be playing in the qualifiers, let alone euro 2020, making the friendly about him turns it into a complete waste of time.

What a strange society we are becoming in Europe.

It's a bit weird but it's a friendly, Bosnia will have agreed and it's presumably not a cap.

So I don't really see much issue with that. I think it's probably a bit ott to call that European society becoming odd, it's just one person's slightly left field idea.

It's not just a bit weird it's really weird. A ex-player is going to kick off a football match in a suit then walk off. Ten years ago this would be laughed at it.

In a decade we are going to have sick kids kicking off matches aren't we in some sick virtue circle jerk?
