ben_lcfc Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 I absolutely love Maguire, but don't you agree that his gameplay has elements of Sol, Sol, Bamba? #crazy
AjcW Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Not really mate. He doesn’t worry me at all really. To be honest if he keeps playing like this all season there’s no way he shouldn’t be a starting defender at the World Cup. (He won’t be though) watching him bringing it out of defence is an absolute joy... we just need to keep signing players like him and become less one dimensional and predictable
Kitchandro Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Yeh in a good way? Bamba was very strong and brought the ball out of defence well, like Maguire. Bamba's only problem was he was very erratic defensively, he made a lot of errors. At his best he was top class but he was inconsistent. If Maguire is a consistent Bamba he'll be top class. I feel like you're implying that Bamba bringing the ball out of defence was a negative thing. Well the 'bombscare' reputation preceded him but I can't remember one goal we conceded that was down to him doing 'too much' in possession. His failures as a defender were down to basic mistakes. Maguire should be praised for being positive on the ball, god knows we need it sometimes because we're struggling to create chances.
whoareyaaa Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Bamba and top class should not be in the same sentence. Maquire is nothing like him seems to have a bit of control over the ball and defensively looks solid
The Doctor Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 In as much as they both liked to play like they were the reincarnation of beckenbaur, yes. Not that that's a bad thing - calm on the ball and happy to carry it out is a great change to "shit ourselves and hoof it as far away as possible if it comes within 5 yards". Difference is bamba was positionally poor, regularly going for forays forward then leaving the defence wide open, whereas Maguire seems so far a solid defender able to hold his own with some of the top strikers in the league.
kyleolly Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 He does come out of the back line abit like bamba used to but he's a much better footballer than sol.
Fox92 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Maguire is a better defender and better footballer than Sol Bamba. Sol Bamba. FFS.
davieG Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Well he lost possession about 3 times today coming out with ball giving Chelsea the chance to counter. He needs to be more careful.
Stadt Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Needs to pick and choose when to dribble into the oppositions half better
coolhandfox Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 He wouldn't have too do it if the midfield was up to the job.
Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Maguire is a Premier League defender, Sol was a Championship defender. That's it.
Sampson Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 He has made at least one huge mistake every game so far the but they haven't been punished. Don't get me wrong he's been very good but don't think he's been as amazing as people have made out yet.
Chico1958 Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 Bamba and Peltier doing fine down here Very early days but top of the league with some outstanding championship players Two to watch out for unless they cock it up, Zahore and Mendez-Laing, both free I think

It's a sad statement that the man who feels most at ease doing that is a centre back.

Well it's hardly the same thing when Maguire does it he leaves a gaping hole in the defence. I'm not saying he shouldn't just that he needs to be careful, more selective and look up for a pass as he tends to have his head down all the time. He'll get better at it I'm sure.

I think there's a lack of passing options, not just for him but our Midfield in general yesterday. It was almost like he was bringing it forward looking for something but nothing opened up.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 Maguire is class, the odd error is totally negated by everything else he does, we need his ability to play out from the back and not just blasting it up the pitch and gifting away possession Call me mental but I'd like to see what he's like in midfield, reckon he'd be quite handy
Koke Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 Maguire occasionally loses the ball in midfield partly because our CMs aren't very good. Ndidi's passing is wank considering how good of a player he actually is and James is just meh. If we had better footballers in the middle we'd look so much better. It's a sad state of affairs when our CB looks after the ball better than our midfielders. On top of that, Maguire is actually a good defender. He does all the things Huth & Morgan do + he can play fiotball. The boy is class.
Filberts lovechild Posted 10 September 2017 Posted 10 September 2017 Very quickly becoming my current favourite city player. Can see he really bullies opponents strikers, off the ball he's always chirping about something. Top player and hopefully with us for years to come. And no, not anything like Sol Bamba
