Unpopular Opinions You Hold

You're full of first world problems and sound too much like a spoilt brat for someone who obviously has an education and probably a job. If people can spend £650 on a phone when basically the same functions can be had for £50 (or free) then it's a luxury. Drinking and smoking and what you buy are all a choice.

Not sure why you have a hang up about buying a house. When you buy one you'll find that they are expensive and you are tied to them, I certainly hope you get one soon. There are plenty of rentals bigger than a shoebox for less than £500pcm, perhaps you are too choosey there too. Really your whinging is irritating and this subject has been done to death. Move on.

Only being able to rent, therefore at the mercy of landlords who can jack up prices or try and play off any necessary repairs as not their responsibility, and stuck in that situation for the foreseeable future may be a first world problem in that at least there is a roof over our heads, but it's still a problem for most of my generation, one caused by house prices having grown far faster than wages, not by too much texting about avocados or whatever the latest claim is. Those £650 phones are done on contract over a couple of years usually and means the same monthly bill as a simple PAYG phone - 650 quid expenditure over 24 months is not why home ownership is out of reach for big swathes of a generation.

very much depends on the location, £450pcm gets a three bed house in Bradford, or a tiny two room flat in Cambridgeshire - problem there being there are jobs in Cambridgeshire and there aren't in Bradford.

Strokes - the world has ended but nobody has told us. When we first moved to Rural France we didn't follow news of any kind and just enjoyed the outdoors and the sun, we really felt that the world could have ended and we'd know nothing about it.

People access personal news much more these days - especially the younger generation, however I think many people will hear news without really understanding it. We may be the most intelligent humans of all time but most of us are stupid.

I think this is my take. There's no need to worry, just enjoy your short life because we are insignificant. Sad that celebrities and poloticians don't realise that too. Whilst we may all be the centre of our own lives we are nothing to almost everyone else. Which is why war and inequality exists so easily.

A creator. It's as believable as the big bang from nothing I suppose. Our minds are incapable of understanding the change of nothing to something. My take is that whether there is/was a creator or not (and I don't think there was), if that creator is doing sweet FA to help his creations and allowing them to have sad, piteous lives then it doesn't deserve to exist or to be praised.

But then again it's all about the after-life isn't it? :riyad:

Multiple quotes, have you been behaving fif?

:D

I've never believed in an afterlife, and have always lived my life accordingly.

Neither do I.

I've never even met a ghost and considering how many people have died and how long I've lived I'd have thought that the probability would be high, but I tried to phrase my response so as not to offend those who believe in a God/creator/afterlife.

In my opinion, religion is about hope for those who believe and control for those in charge but there are a lot of pleasant people who believe and I wish them all the best.

I'm always behaving, aren't I?

Even when I get passionate I mean no disrespect to other posters.

But to answer your underlying question I'm still on restrictions so you may not hear much more from me today. I happen to not have any classes this morning - in fact for the rest of the week (uni prof who knows how to organise) and I'm waiting to get takeaway curry for me and the wife before I travel back home - from where there is no Indian restaurant within 2 hours drive! First world problem.

OK,  preparing to shouted down but....

If they cracked down on motoring offences, took a zero tolerance approach, loaded every road with traffic/speed cameras forcing everyone to obey the law it might in a generation or so lead to a more lawful society.

At least it would remove the anomalies in those who get fined/lose points. I think it's a great idea and with the incredible increase in fines UBI could be put in place alongside the replaying on every road in the country :D.

I think a true implementation of maximum speeds is now possible using the technology that we have - especially on motorways - it would also allow for flexible speed limits, e.g. increased during the night when roads are clear, reduced near schools at pupil movement times. One of the annoyances of speed limits is that they are fixed and not variable depending on conditions.

Unpopular opinion for today: Primary and secondary, national education should be focussed on making children better adults and not academic results. The aim should be that of better human understanding, care for the community and nature. A better, kinder, more thoughtful citizen is more important than a more "intelligent" specialist. Education after 16 (possibly 14 if the system proves efficient) can then concentrate on specialisms and work skills. Broader skills between 16 (14) and 18 with the possibility of a longer stay in education (of all types - not simply university)not necessarily linked to a Masters/Doctors  progression. Equal value given to apprenticeships and training for manual/technical work as it is for academic work. Our system is great but inefficient and flawed. It could be so much better.

Well, it was widely reported in the media and I’ve no reason to believe they don’t read newspapers or watch the news.

Or are you suggesting they live in a bubble?

I only caught it in the Times and I have the news on most of the day, is it really even a surprise that the first settlers here would have had dark skin? I have imagined most people who went to school would have assumed that anyway given the migration of our species originally came from East Africa.

I suppose you could debate whether the first people who settled here would be "British" as nationality and identity over a land or area can and has changed over time but I have thought the fact the first settlers onto this island would have not been white would have been obvious.

Britain was occupied by humans about a million years ago. Cheddar man was from 10,000 years ago, so he was a long, long way from being straight out of Africa. The theory is that modern white Brits are descended from cheddar man. Ergo, we're all black, and can now listen to gangster rap without looking a bit stupid.

No idea where he got his blues eyes from though. Seems weird that he would have dark skin pigment but bright blue eyes.

Probably to help him see in the dark better. Life was probably like that Vin Diesel film, Pitch Black. Cheddar Man has helped make this world a better place and I for one will never forget his brave efforts.

I'd be all for this, assuming of course they also deal with motorists who drive dangerously slow and clamped down on lane use on our dual carriageways and motorways :D.

Does this mean I can now black up?

That's kind of the whole point though isn't it, if you're religious.

A non-interventionist God so that people can be judged or rewarded for faith and upon the results of their actions in life.

Interesting Mac, and I couldn’t disagree more :D

Sorry but I don’t believe it’s all random luck. There’s too many species, plants, flowers, fauna etc. for it all to be just luck imo.

I’ll believe the ‘arrival from another planet’ bit when someone proves there’s life on other planets - but as yet we don’t know.

The world is too beautiful beyond words to just be a result of some sort of luck. There must have been a creator at the start of it all I believe..

It might seem fanciful but all these genus of species have common ancestors and so on and science can take them all back to the amoeba.

As for the beauty of life, tell that the antelope in the jaws of a lion, the cancer sufferer, the parasites that eat their way out of their hosts, the football supporter who sees his team only draw at home to Stoke.

It's a very naive view and no argument for some kind of creator.

Right.

But then going down that road...is a deity that lays down that kind of test, isn't wholly clear on the rules and promises infinite torment for the losers really worth worshipping either? Sounds like a bit of a sadist to me.

I don't like Great British Bake Off.  I don't get it's popularity.

Why watch somebody make a cake?  It's just a chore isn't it?  May as well watch someone wash their car or do the washing up.

What's next?  The Great Celebrity Ironing Challenge?

I feel there's too many bake-off shows.

I don't mind a mix of Masterchef and the main Bake Off programme, but noticed that there's some more baking ones currently and think there's another one to be released quite soon with just Paul Hollywood on it.

I don't know, does it count as habitable if every time you open your front door you get stabbed?

Great price though in theory.

1093 episodes of violent crime reported in Leicester in December 2017 compared to 901 in Hull for the same month.

I know I'm late as **** but just saying.

Keep reading. We all eventually agreed that Hull is basically the best place in the world.

The BBC in their quest for equality and fairness through race and gender are now discriminating against white English males. Take sports reporting as an example it’s mainly women reporting now, it should always be the best person for the job whatever the gender or race.

Says Mark Lawrenson without a hint of irony... :D
