Well most of the ones you'e mentioned aren't name changes, they are just new grounds given a name. The ones with sponsorship usually have an official name, like the Etihad is the City of Manchester. So the Liberty had always been called the Liberty for example. The Riverside isn't even a sponsor as far as I know, it's just by a river. Oh and the JJB is now the DW, the Britania is the Bet365 and the Reebok is the Macron.

Webbo Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 Huddersfield was Leeds Road I think. The new stadium was once called the Galpharm Stadium I believe.

I've been to 7 of those old grounds.

I did wonder about this - it was more my recollections of old ground names...

Hull was Boothferry Park, not Boothery (typo, I assume) I got all apart from 3: never knew Burton (non-league when my brain was young enough to remember such info), couldn't remember Wigan & somehow forgot Oxford despite having been there.
Tuna Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 Burton previously played at Eton Park, their current ground was always the Pirelli Stadium, I believe the land for the ground was donated to the club by Pirelli in exchange for the naming rights.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 Wasn't Huddersfield the McApine Stadium when it was first built?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 Also, what was the official name of Filbert St?
Finnegan Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 Vetch Field isn't a pre sponsorship name it was a totally different stadium.

Fox92 Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 When I lived in Manchester one of my mates lived at the back of Maine Road - there's just a school there now I think - that was pretty exciting. Wonderful ground once stood there.
Aus Fox Posted 26 November 2017 Posted 26 November 2017 The mannor Ground was an outstanding away day!

Wonderful ground once stood there. I've been there twice but the one that lives on in the memory was when Mark Robins scored in our only away victory in the 94/95 season. The Kippax stand was partially finished and missing a roof. The previous Saturday West Ham had been there and used up all of the cagoules that Man City provided for travelling fans. Man City v Leicester was one of the few games in a full football league fixture list that survived the foul torrential rain that night. I remember when Robins scored I jumped into a huge puddle that was nearly deep as I was tall (at the time) and instantly regretted it. Fortunately the next day the club laid on special t-shirts for the few that managed to make it to the game that night. It was the wettest I'd been since the ZDS Area Semi-Final against Notts County at Meadow Lane a few years previous.

It was a typo. I only went there once and it ended in a 5-2 defeat. I think they were relegated that season and we stayed up with a last day win over Oxford. Hull is one of the few teams where I've been to both the old ground and the new one.
Footballwipe Posted 27 November 2017 Posted 27 November 2017 Don't forget the two classics... BT Cellnet Riverside Stadium Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium Unfortunately the bosses at those companies soon realised putting your brand as a suffix with an "actual" name means your bit just gets ignored.

There was briefly Sportsdirect.com@St James Park Stadium too.
