I get the point of the thread, some games do seem to pass him by. but there's a lot more to being a midfielder than goals and assists. in fact since we've been promoted we've barely had a centre mid who scores or gets many assists, and in that time we've won the league.

rarely stamps his mark on a game though, although that said he was (apparently) very good against Chelsea less than a month ago and people were saying he should be in the England squad if he's fit, so yano. win some, lose some. he shouldn't be starting for us though, he's probably our 4th best midfielder.

Whilst by no means the reason for the defeat I’m at a loss to know what precisely James brings to the team.

If you’re a midfielder who doesn’t score and doesn’t really assist then what do you do?

I think you’re confusing midfielders with forwards.

I think part of his problem is that he’s a 7/10 guy for lots of aspects (passing, interceptions, mobility) whereas some like Ndidi scores 9/10 for interceptions and is therefore particularly eye-catching in that respect.

He was out for almost two full seasons and has been back for about ten games. I think he gets a free pass this season and assuming he stays fit then it’s more fair to judge him next season. Puel obviously sees something in him and I’m happy to trust his judgement.

He's a Championship player. That's his level. If we had 11 players of his ability in the team, that's where we would be playing.

Good squad player but shouldn't really be first choice, I'm not convinced by him at this level but he's a useful option to have. We need squad players.

This is my frustration, for the reasons you give, I can accept, but send him on loan to get fit, but for me he’s not good enough/ fit enough to warrant a regular start.

Completely agree. No one gets a free pass in a side that wants to finish in the top half.

I've said all along against good teams he gets overrun. It happened at Arsenal away just the same.

James doesn't break up play, players seem to drift past him and he doesn't score goals.

The best midfielder we've ever had didn't score or set up goals, probably not the best line of argument.

I don’t personally rate him particularly but he’s clearly doing something right in training or he’s got dirt on someone high up in the team selecting department!

The best midfielder we’ve ever had also played in a way that made it clear what he did.

He also scored more than James.

N’didi is in the team to tackle. I’m not sure what James is there to do and so far no one else has actually been able to explain what he does.

If you're referring to Kante... he was a holding man. He's not there to score goals.

Currently Ndidi is our holding man. Silva also wins the ball back a lot.

I've always seen James as a box to box midfielder but a true box to box midfielder scores goals IE Izzet. James just goes backwards and sideways.

And here comes the scapegoating again.

The point of him? The Chelsea away game will give you an idea. Poor against Everton, poor today but does that make him bad? Does that make him Championship standard? There were many players today just as bad as him if not worse.

He's looked decent at times this season and has shown he can still do a job, he isn't a player that should start week in week out but he's still good enough for Leicester City.

It’s not scapegoating for me, I actually feel for the lad, can’t be out for as long as he has, and hit the ground running, could take a long time for him to hit the highs again.

The knee injury he had was more or less the same as gazza’s, he was never the same player after either, he looks a little heavy, and not very mobile, players with his injury will tell you, they always hold back, for the fear of it going again.

He’s been through hell, and is only just coming back from over 2 years out, yes he had a loan at Barnsley, and come back and got injured again, I just think he could do with a injury free season at a lower level, then come back and see where he’s at, but at present I feel he’s not got what we need at the level we are at, and that’s not scapegoating
