Antwerp is a great boozing city, much better than Bruges which was disappointing - at least midweek anyway.

Kulminator is possibly the most unique pub I’ve been to, the neurotic landlord grills you on the way in to ensure you actually like a Lambic and you’re not just some sort of pisshead reveller.

There’s hundreds of bottled beers in there, including amongst other ether beers, a John Smith’s from 1987(!). Tynt Meadow is proudly a write in after the 2017 publishing date too.

Just been in Ye Olde Mitre in London, which positions itself as a cask ale pub, and 90% of people were drinking Asahi (is that the new Madri/Guinness?). Okay it was hot today and you get a few tourists, but whenever I’m down in London I get the feeling that cask is really struggling… When I’m in the midlands/north I don’t get that impression at all though. Is it just me, or is this a thing?

Off Glasgow for a stag soon. Happy to hear shouts of pubs. Got a list already but word of mouth recommends always the best.

Assume this is all still accurate. Take cash if you want to do The Laurieston too - had to miss a pre-gig pint in there which was gutting.

Glasgow was an absolute treat at the weekend. A summary:

The Pot Still - Brilliant pub more famed for its whisky selection but had some nice ales on tap too. Didn't dig into it but their Bavarian beer selection was up there as well.

The Horse Shoe - As a local at the bar told me, an iconic Glasgow pub. More worth a visit for the architecture than beer but did a nice pint of West's St Mungo Lager.

Shilling Brewing Co - Big gaff in what I thought was a converted bank, but with a micropub feel. Was absolutely rammed on a Friday night just with normal folk on a night out, rather than beer hipsters or old men. Great to see.

Inn Deep - Cool pub in converted railway arches on the bank of the River Kelvin in the trendy West End. Assume it's run by Williams Brothers given the number of their beers available. Had a nice Czech Pilsner.

Bon Accord - Another cosy ale and whisky type boozer on the edge of the city centre. Could gladly have spent the whole afternoon in there if their card machine hadn't been broken. Had a Brass Castle Bad Kitty porter which was a very ideal cold, winter Sunday pint.

The Griffin - A corner pub near the Bon Accord with great architecture and loads of Skye ales. Tried some of their bottles during lockdown so was nice to finally have a pint of their stuff in a pub.

Will be back. Never been so gutted to leave a new city knowing how fvcking far away I live from it.

Some Pomona Island (very) pale in the Two-Tailed Lion yesterday doing pub golf for my brother's birthday, followed by some unnecessarily high abv cider in the Blue Boar that his mate bought. Had declared myself out of the game at this point, having already necked a Guinness in Duffy's to prove I'm still a big man.

Then had a Thornbridge Melba peach pale at the Old Bell in Derby today. Nice Father's Day treat to round off a solid weekend of drinking in moderation.

A triple on the way back from the cricket on Friday; Bankers Cat, Leeds followed by Brunswick, Derby followed by Ale Wagon, Leicester

Some bad news to report from Birmingham however. Two big closures!! The Anchor in Digbeth nearby the Bus Station closed and Post Office Vaults is closing citing the cost of their bottles are 30% upwards. Throw in Zumhof and Hockley Dining Club in the process of closing, a real sign of the times. Throw in reports that some of the suburbs such as Stirchley are reaching over saturation and one big pub in particular there has asked for a 2am licence which I think we go to the detriment of the micro pubs/craft places around there. Brum in a bit of a pickle.

Asahi is a lovely pint especially when it's hot - not sure why people are bothered what other people drink? Does it matter? As long as you enjoy what you drink...is all that matters surely.

Madri is piss though I agree

Yeah all fair. It was more an observation, but can see how it comes across as being a condensing ***** 😂

Some trifecta, that! Always feel sorry for The Alex in Derby. In most cities it's hands down the closest good pub for anyone changing trains and enough time to kill. There, it loses out on that by about 10ft!

Cask ale in London is usually flat as a witches tit, which is why they don't sell much.

A decent cask ale should have some body & leave froth lines at the side of the glass when drunk, that is unlikely in London.

Sparklers rarely used south of the Watford Gap.

this discussion has been had on this thread but I always look forward to a pint of what I would clumsily describe as 'creamy' ale when I come to e g. Leicester or Sheffield. Very different from what we have down south as you point out.

The Victoria Hotel in Beeston is absolutely sensational. The Crown is also very good. So many good options around there for an outer city suburb. Very handy that it's on the midland mainline.

Stopped there before changing trains once, it’s excellent.

A half of pale ale from the Brampton Brewery tent at the Chesterfield Cricket Festival. Tasted decent out of a placcy cup which can only be a good indicator of quality.

I quite like a Asahi ice cold out the bottle, probably my favourite lager in that format and one I stock at home if I fancy the odd beer in the current weather- but Asahi on draft seems to go flat very quickly, and it loses its character if it’s not ice cold, so unless you’re downing it by the pint it’s a very odd choice especially as it’s usually the most expensive lager on any given selection.

Was in Beeston on Saturday and it was heaving

Loads of decent coffee places/restaurants etc

Rare example of a high street that’s actually on the up

Enjoying a side pull of the Tree House bitter at their brewery. Outstanding product, and as close to a cask as you’ll find on this side of the Atlantic.

Going to Norwich tomorrow. Looks a good city for pubs.

It was said they had a pub for every day of the year and a church for every Sunday. Not quite as many these days but still plenty of great pubs and interesting medieval churches left.
