A lovely pint of Beamish. A pub near by my work has that, Guinness and Murphy's all on.

What’s your preference? I love a Guinness but haven’t seen Murphy’s or Beamish on anywhere I’ve been to yet!

Murphy’s I like as I find it sweet. Beamish is very creamy and smooth. Guinness is harsher than the other two.

Murphy’s I prefer out the three.

was a while ago now, but the best commercial style stout I've had was Brains Black, in the 'Goat Major' in Cardiff.

Blue Ball in Shepshed do a very good Murphy's if you ever find yourself about that way.

Heading up to York tomorrow, if anyone has any must visit pub suggestions.

I really enjoyed the market cat and house of trembling madness. This was a couple of years back.

I second house of trembling madness.  Brewyork taphouse also decent for beer, usually lots of guests on and the food offering is usually decent. Also enjoyed Pivni.

I’m in Birmingham city centre next week for a gig. Any decent recommendations for there please?

Central brum is a bit underwhelming IMO. Colmore (thornbridge but large number of guests/keg).  Wellington, black country ales but the Citra there is usually sublime and plenty of characters.  Head of Steam usually has a couple of decent guests not keen on the boozer.  Old contemptibles is a nice pub but always underwhelmed by the beer.  Think they usually have Tim Taylors on.

I found that when I went to York I tried to cram too many pubs in and ended up never really settled anywhere.

Some great choices though and it's hard to go wrong.

I enjoyed day drinks better, couple that stick in my mind were the Three Tuns and ye olde starre inn.

Enjoyed Brew York as well, for more varied drink options but is a different vibe to most pubs in York and its a bit out the way.

There's loads. One of the best places in the UK for pubs/beer. Even the average pubs have good beer selection. A few suggestions below:

York Tap in the station. Huge beer selection.

The Swan and The Slip for more cosy traditional pubs (next to each other)

Brew York and Market Cat for a more modern crafty vibe

House of Trembling Madness or Pivni for something a bit different

BeersOfEurope website.

Some of the beers I’ve had recently from there are truly world class

Any other recommendations from there if I'm going to place an order?

Which ones did you think were the best?

Blue Bell - tiny and almost one of a kind. Very congenial and fun, beer is well kept.

The Phoenix - where I'd drink if I lived there. Great lager and cask options, multi-roomed, by happenstance my girlfriend and I ended up there with their quiz on so they brought out a massive plate of pork pie for each table, even though there was only two of us. Came second or third which was a good showing.

The Swan - feels a little like the Bath Hotel in Sheffield

Golden Ball - community pub so very buzzy and fun but felt a little like being at house party to me.

Then Market Cat isn;t on the guide but the best new Thornbridge pub, beer selection is excellent, likewise with Pivni. The only one that I stumbled on that wasn't recommended anywhere was the Three Cranes, very nice cask-led old man pub.

+1 for York Tap. The whole city is a gem.

Good shouts here.

Don't really remember venturing into the Blue Bell but the Swan was decent and the other two were semi-regularly haunts when I was there. Definitely worth visiting and a little more off the beaten track.

Pivni was a favourite too.

I would add The Hop - always had a reasonable selection, stone baked pizzas done in house and live music some days.

Evil eye is a good spot for drinks but not necessarily beer.

Got some tidy looking ones lined up for tomorrow - The Victoria, Hand & Marigold, Simon the Tanner all Bermondsey way

Also The Victoria in Leeds looks like it's finally got an opening date, pre Christmas — Kirkstall & Five Points joint venture. Was a beautiful pub before it closed years ago, trust them to work wonders with it
