Was in Melbourne last week.  Had a couple of cans of Melbourne bitter.  Not great, apparently popular with Hipster types.  Also not really a bitter.

An Aussie bitter? Surely not.

Agree that the pubs in London are superb but when 90% of them in the centre ring last orders at 10:50 at the weekend it puts a dampener on things somewhat

It's so weird in such a 24-hour city that you still have to pay to go to fvcking nightclubs if you want to swig at those times. Makes the capital look like a provincial town from 20 years ago. I'll never understand it.

Reminds me now more of a large nondescript city like Hong Kong than a provincial town. Lack of students and youngsters compared to other big European cities. Mostly tourists and workers.

It's not our culture, late night drinking is not really a thing here. We open at 11am and close at 11pm. If you want European style, I'd be afraid we'd lose some of our own unique pub culture and bitters/ales and become a lager-led country of shiny glass holders.

I much prefer our unique culture than the standard bland European operation of a main square, people smoking outside and rows of the same bar repeated.

There are plenty of pubs in London open past 11pm, Gibneys, dover castle, Sea horse, big chill, blues bar being the best ones and O Neils Wardour st being the mentalist one

I mean, I've been to Big Chill and O'Neill's on Saturday nights... they're not really what I'm on about. They're where you end up going because there's such a paucity of alternatives when places start shutting up shop around 10.30pm.

I'm talking local boozer vibes, like you'd find in most towns around the country open later than usual on a Saturday night. I've always preferred day-drinking but it just astounds me that the vast majority of our capital's pubs aren't in the game on weekend nights, especially given the amount of people there on any given weekend who are visiting from the kind of late night culture you describe.

Frequent user, best method to recall time and place of previous pints. Appreciate the pubs and liquor stores over here who publish and update their menus on the app, too.

Same, there are not many in Leicester who do unfortunately. Certainly no off licences (liquor stores) locally who would do the same.

Fair enough. Maybe you hit the nail on the head. As there’s so many visitors on any weekend, they’re gonna be doing it properly by 11pm at Maddox, tramp, cuckoo, kings road clubs. Or raving in the west end. After wrapping up at a boozer during the day.

I’ve never thought about it tbh, if I’m out past 11pm I’ve prob had enough of something like cittie of yorke by then

Bradfield Farmers Blonde. Just trying a tin of Brewgooder Lager now, reminds me of the Sicilian edition Moretti did that seems to have been discontinued - nice citrusy vibe.

Friday’s collection

All Plymouth

Dolphin Hotel - Guinness

One of the few around the Barbican which was a proper pub without a Stonegate esque re-fit.

Bread and Roses - Devon Hazy Sandfords

On Plymouth’s hipster street, average place really but you’d struggle to find such a building in Leicester with its decorative ceiling

The Providence - Devon Hazy Sandfords

Well this place has probably taken my pub of the football season. It’s back street pub in an area which was on the rough side. No signage. A corner house plot. Only opens from Wed to sun, 5 till 11. Open burning fire, pub dogs, carpet, barely any room. Full of Knick knack items with lots of nautical based stuff. Highly recommend - if you lived here, you’d be in three nights a week and the sort of place where one becomes four. Shouldn’t have left it for the game yesterday
