The Premier League’s elite clubs secured a larger share of TV money on Thursday in a massive victory for the ‘big six’.

Clubs have voted to tinker with the international television revenue share from 2019, with more emphasis placed on teams finishing higher up the league.

The news will be viewed as success in boardrooms of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool.

A Premier League statement read: ‘The maximum a club can receive in total central revenue payments is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club.’

Regardless, it represents a shift from the norm and creates a further wedge between the big six and others in the top division.

They needed 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs to vote in their favour of a TV share based largely on league position.

Despite some surprising support from clubs lower down the league, the giants were only able to gain a slight addition to their pot.

The numbers still pale into insignificance when compared to La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, with a maintained share of at least double that of the other big European leagues.

Richard Scudamore added: ‘When the Premier League was formed in 1992 nobody could have envisaged the scale of international growth in the competition which exists now.

‘Back then the clubs put in place a revenue sharing system that was right for the time and has served the League well, enabling them to invest and improve in all areas.

‘This new agreement will continue that trend with a subtle change that further incentivises on-pitch achievement and maintains the Premier League’s position as the most equitable in Europe in terms of sharing central revenues.

‘By coming together and agreeing this change, the clubs have provided a platform for the future success of the League for many years ahead.’

I don't see how giving the top teams more money will make the PL more successful it may well improve the chances in Europe but will surely make the PL less even and less competitive.

Okay Google, translate the following from bullshit to English please:

"This new agreement will continue that trend with a subtle change that further incentivises on-pitch achievement"

"This new agreement will ensure the top six, desperate to pull even further away from the threat of teams like Leicester creeping into their cosy club at the top, get a bigger share of the pot. I mean it's not like they get enough from European football already, is it?"

Just shows the big clubs and scream and scream they'll get what they want. Baffled we supported this.

why Is this here but premier league rights is moved to general football and sport?

Because that's where the thread creator posted it, yours was merged into that because that was started first.

Stop being so paranoid.

What bloody clubs voted for this? So stupid. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

I can only assume there are a large number of deluded owners out there who are of the belief that they are going to be able to break through the glass ceiling into a regular top 4 or 5 spot.

Let's throw more money at it!

Thought we might've been in this 'big 6'. I mean, we've won the Premier League more times than Liverpool and Spurs, and Arsenal haven't won it in over a decade, I'm just trying to work out why they deserve a bigger chunk of the cash?

Paranoid? I only asked a question.

the Big six would say they are the most attractive and the most watched by foreign audiences so deserve a bigger slice of the pie than the rest of the Premier League as their 'brands' are known throughout the world. what would you rather watch if you were a foreign audience, Watford vs Bornemouth or Manchester United vs Liverpool. I understand it will create a massive chasm between the top six and the rest of the Premier League but the rest of the clubs will have to look to other ways to compete like steller recruitment and having a great youth setup and policy.

Surely it should be the ‘big 7’ with us getting some of the pot. People all over the world watched us win the title. We basically made the Premier League what it is today. What a load of bum wash. Why did we vote for this? Bonkers

Clearly more to this than meets the eye. I wonder if this is a measure to prevent the top clubs getting serious about a European Super League.

Going to take even more now for one of the other clubs to break into the top six. My personal concern is that in the long run it'll degrade the Prem in the same way as Spain, meaning that everyone will lose out as it's no longer such an attractive spectacle.

They don't give a shit about top 6 in reality, all that most care about is staying up. The more money 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th receive compared to those below them, it means they have more finances to keep themselves above the rest. Everyone just wants to establish the status quo and stay on the the gravy train.

Of course it is, they threaten it quietly on a regular basis to get a bigger slice of the pie.

:unsure:Great shame Clubs are not free to sell 'Streaming rights' to their Oversea's fans in Countries where there is no notable coverage of the EPL (as the TV rights are too expensive) - e.g. Austria.

Big Six plus West Ham, Everton, Leicester, Newcastle made it 10 out of 20 in favour, plus surprisingly Huddersfield.

Don't know who are the other "three turkeys" to make it 14.

So if we make the top 6 next season at say the expense of Arsenal does that mean we get their share? No didn’t think so because the big 6 should read the most plastic fans 6.

I'm guessing it would be based on league position finish. Teams aspiring to be in that Big six would vote and Joel to get into the Big 6 therefore earning a bigger wedge, don't see why you'd vote yes knowing the chances of that happening are slim though.

If only wage structures in the real world worked this way. Boss can only earn 1.8 times the cleaners wage.
