Nice one, Oz.

Been thinking about doing a podcast thread for a while.

CaseFile True Crime Podcast is great once you get past the slightly ropey production values of the first few and the unusual Aussie host. Started listening in March and I've caught up on all 92 episodes. Some really interesting, in depth looks at some of the most famous crimes both here in the UK, the US and Australia. Well written and researched and can be pretty grim listening too.

Serial is a pretty obvious one.

S-Town is one of the best listening experiences I've ever had. Just absolutely loved it. Enchanting and heartbreaking. How the producers chanced upon such a crazy story with unbelievable characters whilst following a totally different lead is quite something. I've heard some criticise it as invasive considering what happens (no spoilers) but I didn't find that to be the case at all.

Ooo yes please.

Broadly comedy based podcasts: Elis James and John Robins (chat from their radio show), The Adam Buxton Podcast (light-hearted amusing chats with various interesting folk), Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (similar to Adam Buxton, but recorded live and Herring is a bit more of a tit), The Comedian's Comedian (in depth chats with comics about the craft).

Mostly serious one-on-one chats: Waking up with Sam Harris (tackles a lot of weighty subjects and can be pretty dry, but the guy is lightspeed smart and subjects are often interesting), The Joe Rogan Experience (Sam Harris for dude-bros), WTF with Marc Maron (Curmudgeon comedian turned surprisingly incisive interviewer) 10% Happier (ABC news anchor Dan Harris interviews people about meditation - great for those interested in the subject but a little sceptical).

Social science / pop psychology: Malcolm Gladwell Revisionist History (if you like his books, you'll like this), Radiolab, Freakonomics Radio.

The Moth - true stories told by all sorts of people. Some very funny & crazy, which range from being a Prince's prostitute in a harem, to actor John Turturro's true story about the 2003 New York blackout.

The Infinite Monkey Cage - Prof Brian Cox and Robin Ince covering all sorts of science. Very entertaining.

Elis James and John Robins' Podcast is the only thing that gets me through my Monday morning commute - so funny.

My Dad wrote a porno is a great podcast as well very funny.

Thinking about getting into Audiobooks for my drive into work - does anyone have a website to get them through Audioable seems ok but its quite expensive..... Is there any way to get some freebies?!

This American Life, Welcome To NightVale, Stuff You Should Know, StarTalk.

All excellent.

Seconding WTNV, great podcast. Surreal and a little creepy. I only listen to podcasts when I run and got into this last winter, so running in the dark whilst listening to WTNV at times could raise the heartrate a little... lol

Recently, I've been listening to 'No Such Thing As a Fish', 'My Dad Wrote a Porno' and 'The Adventure Zone'. Great stuff.

It's dead simple. There's loads of mobile apps available which all have a huge (free) selection to stream or download for later, usually you don't even need to register or anything. Alternatively you can download the mp3s directly (iTunes or similar) and listen to them however you like. A small number you have to pay for, but most of them at least have some episodes available for free.

Have you tried your local library? No idea how it works, but I know that some of them have selections of audiobooks available to 'check out'

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is totally amazeballs.

Can second this. The guy puts out some incredible content. The series are released about every six months, but the research and effort going into the episodes is of the level that other historians might put into writing a book.

Their are plenty of episodes available for free, although many more can be accessed for a reasonable price.

Quite easily downloaded to a smartphone via a number of apps. The one I use is called "Podcast Addict. Does the job. It has charts of popular podcasts and a search function to find podcasts centered around things that might interest you.

I see from another thread that your driving in the states at the moment. Podcasts are a fantastic way to keep everyone entertained on a long journey. So many different subjects covered and a good number have brilliant production value.

I listen to "Last Podcast on the Left" pretty regularly. It's one of many True Crime, Mystery type podcasts out there but with a comedy-centric twist. It has a relatively good set-up compared to some others and the hosts have become pretty proficient in their roles over the long running period it has.

There are three American hosts. One who mostly puts across the info, one who stimulates the discussion with questions and another who mainly cracks jokes. They bounce off of eachother pretty well, but I do think it's probably a love it or hate it sort of show.

The later shows are better than the earlier ones, however there are some gems all through the catalogue. Some of the series they do go into great detail and are actually very informative to listen to. They cover some pretty heavy subjects occasionally and although they always make jokes, they also make the seriousness of what they're covering clear where appropriate.

I've also been listening to "Reasons to be Cheerful" recently. It's been pretty long running and is hosted by Ed Miliband and a Geoff Lloyd. The main segment each week introduces some social/political idea, which they usually discuss with people who have been involved with its implementation in the UK or abroad. Pretty easy listening and interesting. Might irritate you if it goes against your political views!

The Private Eye has an intermittent podcast called "Page 94" which is usually a good listen. They've knocked out a few consistent episodes recently, although I believe Ian Hislop isn't too keen on going digital and so it can go quiet.

The BBC has a few good shows like "More or Less" and of course the "Friday Night Comedy" which is can be good for laugh if you aren't someone that listens to it on the radio anyway.

This was the first series I listened to. The angle at which he approached the subject was fantastic and he really gave me an appreciation of the difference in warfare from that which had been endured before.

When he begins speaking about the initial march of the German army and what happened during their first battle, I was pretty astonished. I mean I'd somewhat learnt about the war previously of course, but this guy painted some picture.

If you have an android phone download an app called Podcast Player and look through to your hearts content. So many great podcasts. I've gone to sleep listening to a podcast every night for the past few years so much so that I couldn't imagine falling asleep without it. Only trouble is I miss half the content and have to listen to the rest the next day.
