Have you tried your local library? No idea how it works, but I know that some of them have selections of audiobooks available to 'check out'

Oh ok I have never even thought about that, I will pop in and have a look thanks

Most of my favourites have been mentioned, but Dear Joan and Jericha is fantastic. It's Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine, who you'd know from various comedy things on the telly even if you don't know the names.

They pretend to be very straight laced agony aunts but their solutions to their 'listeners' problems inevitably descend into a mixture of absolute filth and blaming them for the challenges they face, however ridiculous that is.

It's great, and a good example of the sort of thing where they can really let themselves go, and make something that would inevitably have to be toned down for actual broadcast

I'm not even sure you need to go in (so long as you're registered), as I think it's mostly digital. I'm not sure how it actually works as I've never actually used it haha.

Criminal is a very good podcast, similar to This American Life, covering short stories somehow involving crime. Although the narrator/host's voice can be a little grating IMO, she does a lot of research and interviews historians/victims/criminals/etc. associated with the story.

Serial/S-Town were good podcasts, albeit with a short run:

S1 of Serial investigates the true story of a young woman in Baltimore and the man who was perhaps, wrongly convicted of her murder.

S2 is a deep dive into the story of Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier who went AWOL and was captured by the Taliban.

S-Town tells the deeply personal story of an eccentric man living in the deep south of America.

I'll just echo what others have said about Dan Carlin's hardcore history. If you have any remote interest in any historical period, he's likely done a podcast on it. Rome, WW1, WW2, the protestant reformation, the mongols, etc. He tells the story in an interesting way, using a lot of legitimate historical sources. Each podcast is hours long, and some topics are 4-5 podcasts long. Maybe more of an audio book than your typical podcast.

If you're into TV or Movies, and like people who break down/analyze/preview future episodes, i'd suggest Bald Move. They have a series of podcasts on many popular shows: Game of Thrones, Westworld, The expanse, etc. I also like "The Watch," which is part of the Ringer network of podcasts.

What do you guys listen on? I’ve always just used the default iPhone podcast app but recent updates have made it shit. I say recent I’ve been complaining about it for months just never downloaded a different one.

Podcasts I listen to include:

BBC Friday night comedy, cycles between the now show, the news quiz and dead ringers

My Dad Wrote a Porno although getting a little tired of it now saw it live and was very underwhelmed.

Infinite Monkey Cage and Strange Cases of Rutherford and Fry science type stuff. I think I learn stuff from them but really I probably remember one thing at most from each show.

Guilty Feminist: Women being funny and irreverent about being a woman in a man’s world. Some really funny stuff but it has gotten very pious and preachy recently. If you’re going to listen then listen to some of the older stuff first.

Everything is alive: A new one that is basically interviewing inanimate objects, only a couple of episodes old so easy to catch up.

Other ones I listen to are language based, news in slow Spanish is a good free 10 minute pod that helps me keep my ear in.

I use Pocket Casts on Android. They do an iOS version too which I imagine is very similar but I've never used it.

It is one of the very few paid apps I have - think it cost me about £2.50 - but it does the job I want with minimal fuss I get heaps of use from it.

Lots of my favourites already mentioned. However, the below are worth a listen within the true crime genre:

  • Swindled - White Collar crime and corporate greed http://swindledpodcast.com/
  • Reply All - Episodes #64 thru #67 - Fascinating story of Paul Modrowski who writes a blog from inside a US prison where he is on the basis of a murder conviction which he denies.

Also, it's quite nice to delve into the Desert Island Discs podcast, huge back catalogue spanning decades.

Thanks so much for all these!

My favourites include:
-S-Town
-The War Nerd
-Adam Buxton
-Kermode & Mayo;   and
-In Our Time.

I listen to a hell of a lot of podcasts - so much so that a while back I started a list (with links) which I've been able to expand with your suggestions.

Ricky Gervais's and Russell Brand's from 2007 really got me into podcasts originally and I've not stopped searching for more and better ones ever since then... The range nowadays is broader than it was but doesn't seem as broad yet as other mediums...

I like waffley, random podcasts that are easy to get to sleep to however some of my favourites for this occasionally let me down. Such as:
  - Adam Buxton's 'Like and Subscribe' song and his loud 'Byes!!!!' never fails to wake me up

  - similarly, Kermode and Mayo deciding to do a Babadook impression at the end of one podcast was massively alarming in the dead of night

  - the shrill 'Letters' song on The Flop House means I stopped listening due to the podcast all together and I've never gone back to that one

  - WTF is great but the loud ads always wake me up.

~

What are the other language based ones (non-UK/US/AUS) that you listen to Captain...?

Here's the list so far...

How on earth do you have time to listen to all of them?

For language based podcasts I’ve worked my way through coffee break Spanish, show time Spanish, started notes in Spanish but didn’t get into that one and try to keep plugging away with news in slow Spanish and news in slow Spanish Latino. I would love to be able to listen to a Spanish football podcast but I would just get lost and then zone out completely. I tried a few Japanese ones before I went out there but they just weren’t basic enough for an absolute beginner.

I often fall asleep to podcasts too and Buxton’s shouting at the end is annoying, I now normally fall asleep to guardian football weekly as I’m not that fussed about that one any more so don’t care if I sleep through half of it.

Oh I've only listened to about half of those (mostly the ones towards the top) - the other half I've just added from this thread for my, or anyone else's, future reference.

I listen to so many because I put a fresh one on most nights as me and Ms Zealot are getting off to sleep. But if you think about it - one every night would be just over a thousand episodes in three years. S-Town is only 7-8 or so episodes and some of the comedian ones only total up to 100 or so. That leaves plenty of silent nights to be filled...

I forgot one by the way but can't for the life of me remember what it is called... It's a biology sciency one with two paleontologists talking about the fossil history of animals (incl. giant sloths, whales and dinos etc). It's great and also extremely soothing for sleep :)

P.S. Thanks for the language recommendations. I'd love to find some podcasts from further flung locations. Can you imagine a Chinese S-Town equivalent in English set in Sichuan or something... Stuff like that.

Another vote here for Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, it really is top drawer. Plus, it does nicely fill up the lions share of a boring work day when you get a new one to listen to lol.

First series of Slow Burn, about the Watergate scandal and the downfall of Nixon is fantastic, and a second series has just started up about the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Similarly, the RFK Tapes, about the assassination of Robert F Kennedy is also a good listen.

Used to listen to a number of Videogames podcasts, but now the only one I follow is Bitsocket. Doesn't bother with the usual "bang on about the latest games" stuff that other pods do, instead its a celebration of games history, with lots of daft quizes and features, and the two hosts play off each other fantastically, so its generally very very funny.

Another shout for Page 94, fantastic Private Eye podcast

99% Invisible is my absolute recommendation. It's a wonderful podcast about random stuff, from how the USA are fighting wildfires wrong to the Shipping Forecast. Over 300 episodes so you can't get bored. It also highlighted me to the Everything is Alive podcast @Captain... mentioned.

  • 4 weeks later...

Went to the Podcast Festival at Kings Place, Kings Cross last night.

Saw the guys from The Complete Guide to Everything http://tcgte.com

Went with the estranged Mrs Livid ( get on better since we separated ) who got tickets, listened to my first Podcast on the way down, was a bit er ooooooooook! A bit reserved about two blokes from Brooklyn just talking to each other for 90 minutes.

They were excellent though!
