Big Wes appreciation

Recommended Posts

The start of the season, plenty of us were hoping Wes would be replaced as he wasn't the player he was. He didn't suit the style Puel wanted to play.

It made sense to ease him out and replace him this season. After an awful start to the season, it seemed the fans opinions were justified.

But now, Wes seems like the player he was before. As always, we were too quick to judge and get rid - The foxestalk way!

I just want to at least show some appreciation to Wes!!

Big Wes is a legend and will deserve appreciation regardless.

However, having watched his performances at the start of the season, the worst of which in my opinion was Everton at home, he was well out of his depth and was clearly struggling. Admittedly he seems to have come back into some form recently, but to pretend his position isn’t in need of serious investment would be akin to burying your head in the sand like an ostrich. Especially with Maguire likely to leave either this summer or if not certainly the year after. CB is by far the position I worry about most in our squad, we just don’t have enough strength and depth.

He has been a fantastic servant, but is 35 next month.  We need to up-grade the CB pairing with some pace and mobility if we are to seriously challenge for 7th and a Cup.   Totally agree that not recognizing this is indeed the act of an Ostrich,

Always has given his best. Main reason for his *blip* in form was the lack of protection in front of him. In this new system we don't see him, or any of the other centre backs, getting exposed for pace or getting booked for tackles in full back areas. Another good reason to applaud the newly adopted playing style.

Either Puel has tweaked it or Wes has gone back to what works for him, but he and Maguire are holding position more and not following attackers out wide and leaving space.

That Everton game he was chasing Richarlison out wide leaving a big gap behind knowing we were exposed if he didn’t make the tackle. Maguire has also curved his marauding runs in recent games, maybe due to opposition, which has helped Wes and the extra energy of Hamza has also helped.

It’s a team game and the team need to play to individuals strengths and not expose their weaknesses, we know Wes’s strengths and weaknesses and in recent games we’ve adapted to play to them.

Soyuncu and Benkovic disagree, Morgan can’t keep going forever but we have Maguire and the 2 young lads and Evans has a couple of years left, the trick will be managing the transition from experienced Morgan to the new breed.

Oh and don’t forget Benalouane

I think the manager picks the best players for the team, if wes is one of those then fair play to Captain Morgan.

We will eventually see a different centre back pairing, but not until the manager sees it as an improvement on wes and said other.

I think only Puel knows when times up.

As said earlier not getting pulled out wide or following his man forward.Good example yesterday we left a lot of room on the flanks for Citys wide men but then use our wingers to cover and defend in the centre where Wes and Mags can deal with that .

Big Wes has certainly looked better of late, and more credit to him.  He's also at an age where the cliff is close, and we didn't sign the two highly-prized kids to sit.  It would be nuts to offer him a new deal after this season.

Also, after the first 2 weeks of the season I think Evans has been even better on the occasions when he's played.

He saved us a couple of times yesterday whereas Maguire looked all over the place defensively on a few occasions.

Still needs replacing sooner or later, getting more and more inconsistent as he gets older and he's 35 soon. Credit where it is due though has been excellent over Xmas and deserves to be playing on merit at the moment.

As much as I want to to take a step back, he has been solid as a rock alongside slab head the past few games and he has been key to us getting the past couple of results we have. Great Stuff Big Wes.

Yeah credit where it's due, I didn't want him anywhere near the team at start of the season, but he has really come back strong since that dark day and is currently in the team on merit.

Personally I havent seen enough of Benkovic or Soyuncu to really hold a true opinion, but I hope you’re right and they come good, because they will need to.

I think big Wes is great, a true legend at our football club, but the fact is he turns 35 next month and will run out of steam sooner rather than later. We will also really struggle to keep hold of Maguire in the summer imo. That will leave us as it stands with Evans and two inexperienced CB’s, hence my opinion that this position will need significant investment shortly.

Do you not think that's why we brought 3 centre backs in the summer in preparation. 1 ready to play and the other 2 to bed in for a season.

The post is generally to appreciate his form as well as anyone else's, especially after he was written off at the start of the season.

To say we haven't invested is an odd one.

Again as mentioned above, this has been noted and why we've seen 3 centre backs come into the club in the summer.

definitely coming to the end of his career is big wes... player coach maybe next year? reserve team manager? i’d like him to stay involved.

depends how you define ‘inexperienced ‘ for the others...

benkovic gettinf plenty of experience this year and you can’t complain about the league.. it’s the same league VVD came from and he’s done alright at liverpool...

Soyuncu played regularly in the bundesliga last year, played international football, played in the europa league... i personally wouldn’t call them inexperienced..

Have to agree with this, I think the club has got this spot on, two highly experienced model pro's come to the twilight of there careers in Morgan and Evans, one coming into his prime years in Maguire, and two bright talents for the future in Soyuncu and Benkovic in their early twenties.

For all the stick the Rudkin and Puel get, I'm pretty happy with this.
