The call to bowl first on this is a shocker even for Joe Root.

I'm over here watching it ! Not going well. 4-0 loss last pm, the locals all Liverpool fans, and we're going to lose the test inside of 4 days. At least it's cheap here !

Disappointed not to see Pope get the nod ahead of Bairstow at 5/6.

Crawley likewise had a good knock in a warm-up test and haven't seen him since. Something has to be done about this batting situation, it's becoming an embarrassment and for as good as Root and Bairstow can be, sadly they are the ones letting us down at the moment.

Pope was affected by the illness that affected the squad. He would have played otherwise

I hate the hope these opening stands give us.

They'll have the illness as an an excuse but it's not been good enough again, bat and ball. Do the bowlers know they're allowed to aim for the stumps?

Is it just Buttler affected?

Will he bat?

Root has been off with it as well. And the preparations were difficult with most the squad having if at some point. I think he will bat, but he hasn't been on the field all day. Whereas Root ensured he was on the field enough to bat in his usual position.

Scared of jinxing it but these 2 been good so far.

Credit where it's due, that was excellent. Hopefully can follow it up tomorrow, and at least make it interesting.

If only the bowlers hadn't wasted the morning.

When Stokes walked in at Headingley we needed 218 to win the test.

When Stokes walked in earlier today we were on 158/3 and needed 218 to win.

It's on like King Kong

...not any more, unfortunately. Not by Stokes anyway.

Root and Buttler need to do pretty much all the legwork from here.

There is a reason noone had got close to chasing anything like that score in South Africa. Disappointing to set up but lower order couldn't hang around but they should never have been chasing that much in the first place. Pope comes in for Bairstow and think we'll go with a spinner, they'll probably go for the easy option of Curran.

Burns out for the series after football training injury

Oh,let’s play a contact sport in training that has nothing to do with the professional sport I get paid handsomely for.

Pathetic. It’s happened before so you’d have thought they’d learnt by now. Amateur stuff really.

Shambolic. We are getting back to how we were in 90's.

Crawley, Bess and Pope in. Must be shit to be Matt Parkinson, apart from getting a free holiday in South Africa. Meant to be reserve spinner yet they pick someone who wasn't even in the original squad.
