Ric Flair Posted 26 April 2019 Posted 26 April 2019 Genoa, Atalanta, Frankfurt and Rennes have put together some decent teams on a pittance comparable to the riches we have. Might be worth looking at their setup and trying to take their recruitment director? Frankfurt would be difficult as they could well be in the Champions League next season, they are my favourite team in Europe right now.
Lambert09 Posted 26 April 2019 Posted 26 April 2019 Not even sure why this is being debated. The club are making it sound like there’s a whole hiring process going on, but in reality they are just making a video of ‘Lee Congerton 2024’ where he pops out of a dustbin wearing the pink 3rd kit

brucey Posted 28 April 2019 Posted 28 April 2019 Not exactly head of recruitment but close enough? https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/11642071/mnf-extra-players-off-the-ball-movement-could-now-be-measured

Analytics are used not just for signings but for evaluating the team as well. E.g. looking at a player's physical numbers to see they are improving, etc. Leicester are quite famous for using analytics heavily both for transfers and for their existing team. Nice job finding this though!

Nice job finding this though! We have that with signing Albrighton, who had the most successful crosses I think.

Data Scientist, Football Whispers (7/18-) First Team Data Analyst, Huddersfield Town FC (9/18-now) PhD in Modelling Neural Brain Responses and Pattern Recognition, University of York (2106) Master of Science - MS, Cognitive Neuroscience, Sheffield Hallam University (2011) Bachelor’s and graduate work in sports and exercise science and psychology Initially that looks an odd fit. But these guys are hired to give a leg up by beating the other clubs’ boffins into unexplored territory. He’s not our new sports psychologist, though he knows a lot about it. His job may be more “how to play” then “whom to buy”. His Twitter links to work in some novel areas. e.g. team attacking styles and passing networks (who and where each player prefers to pass to), giving “insights into team strength, directional habits and strong connectivity between players”. Stuff which could help the coaches with the Barnes-Chilwell connection, or to know opponents better than they know themselves. One of his own papers is Clustering Styles of Premier League Teams Attacking Play. A good, pragmatic topic given Huddersfield’s attack is most certainly a cluster.

I read some of his articles, and though they are quite verbose, they make for quite intriguing reading. Probably no surprise coming from the resident Foxes Talk tactics nerd! Rather than being an odd appointment, I think it's a progressive one. Most clubs have an analytics department, and getting smart people in with new ways of thinking is the sign of a forward thinking club. This guy had an interesting article about keeping team shape, explaining that on average a player only touches the ball for 3 minutes in a 90 minute match, hence why shape is so important. He had ways to measure how effective a team was at keeping shape and how drills could be used to improve this facet of team play. https://proformanalytics.wordpress.com/2017/04/03/team-shape-from-player-tracking-data-tracking-what-happened-and-when/ To me such an appointment is encouraging. It's well known that several of our signings were made because their data suggested they were under valued. Albrighton had a high chance creation rate thanks to his superb crossing and tendency to cross early. Huth had an imperious aerial duals won rate which Liam Moore struggled with. N'golo Kante had an insane tackling and interception rate etc. Part of this guy's job will be used to present objective, fact-based findings to show Rodgers where our team is lacking compared to our rivals.

For me, one of the most encouraging things about the hire is that I can't believe we would staff up with genius young people, then hire a dinosaur like Congerton for their boss. Of course, you could have the most expensive analytics staff going, but if your CEO just hires the players who will sell the most shirts and an old-school manager too inflexible to listen to them, you could underachieve like a certain Manchester club.

Maxwell Cornet is one we ought to be scouting the shit out of too. Left footed right winger who's underlying stats in the minutes he played last season were insane.

foxile5 Posted 23 October 2019 Posted 23 October 2019 Is it normal for all scouts to be declared? I know one poster joked about it, but wouldn't this be a quick route to copying a scouting network?
