Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 Great question and I’m in no way making light of it when I quote you David Brent, I’ve put this somewhere else to but it made me think.... “You grow up, you work half a century, you get a golden handshake, you rest a couple of years and you're dead. And the only thing that makes that crazy ride worthwhile is 'Did I enjoy it? What did I learn? What was the point?' The last 2 years have been incredibly difficult for me personally, but I’ve made changes in my life to hopefully be happier in the long term, but it’s a tough “life” I have anxiety issues, sleep issues, and I have often wondered what “is the point?”

Izzy Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 3 hours ago, ozleicester said: Sub question - what is Happiness? There's different types of happiness I reckon: 1. Instant, in the moment happiness. Celebrating a goal, shooting your load etc. 2. Happiness from achieving something, completing a project/mission or reaching a goal 3. Long term sustainable happiness. Contentment, well being, peace of mind etc. Most of us get happiness from 1 & 2 from time to time, but 3 is what it's all about and many people don't achieve that level of happiness in their lifetime (maybe linked to lack of purpose)
stripeyfox Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 I guess there is no "point". But we are defined by our actions, good or bad, big or small. You could say there was no "point" in the lives of people like Mozart, Vincent Van Gogh, Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton or William Shakespeare too? There was also no "point" in the lives of Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden or Dennis Wise either. The good news is that., I believe, that most people are "good". We do good things and we help each other when people are in trouble. We're there for each other. Try and make the world better for the people around you. That's the point.

Happiness to me is unexpectedly finishing a few hours early on a sunny day and having my lunch at home in the garden. Nice cup of tea and listening to.the birds sing. Perfect. Happiness was not working really hard and buying a fast expensive car in my 20's. 25k on something that gave me zero pleasure and in the end couldn't wait to get rId of.
simFox Posted 3 May 2019 Posted 3 May 2019 Gain experiences, good or bad. Give what you take, more to those closest to you and the most to those that are a part of you.

I try not to make them too hard I did once and I didn’t like it. Right now the point of my life is to make my daughter smile, it’s not that hard for some reason she loves being called poo head. All I have to do is walk in the room and call her poo head and it makes my day. The point of humanity? Fvck knows, at the moment it seems like it is to be as divisive and self interested as possible. Destroy everyone and everything that is not like you.
Vacamion Posted 4 May 2019 Posted 4 May 2019 You are a sentient collection of watery cells trying to make your way on a rock orbiting a minor star on the fringes of one unremarkable galaxy out of a hundred billion, in just one of (for all intents and purposes) an infinite number of universes in the multiverse. Who says there has to be a point to any of it? Enjoy the ride. You only get one go. And try not to be too much of a dick.

Benguin Posted 4 May 2019 Posted 4 May 2019 Nihilism or god. Anything else is illusory. For me it was nihilism now it’s god.

Rob1742 Posted 4 May 2019 Posted 4 May 2019 Not here long, so arrange as many things to make you happy as you can. Try and extend it as much as possible by doing a bit of exercise and eating well, but with a balance as you don’t want it to stop you enjoying yourself. Avoid unhappy or negative people, as they are good at bringing you down to their level. I do struggle though with the fact the happy situations I create to try and make it as nice as possible, tend to have an alcohol element attached to them. Thats my take on where I am at and where I am going with it.

Just realised my inadvertently sexist slant on great people whose lives were, like all of us, pointless so I'll chuck Emily Bronte, Rosa Parks and Marie Curie in for balance....
