Draft system For English football

Recommended Posts

A hypothetical question to give us something to talk about while we wait for Rudkin to get changed out of his swimming trunks.

How do we think the English game would take shape if we had a similar draft system as the American sports leagues.

Now I understand this is incredibly difficult to implement given that we have a football pyramid, so it would work a little differently.  We have 92 teams in the english league levels, these would be the only teams included. Non-league would have to source players outside of the draft.

Academy's would be set up around the country in catchment areas, they would focus purely on talent development with large funding from the football league. These would look after the top talent up to the season a player turns 18.

The flaw with the NFL is that towards the end of the season teams want to loose games, to ensure a better draft pick so I think draft picks should be earnt by league standing. Top of the premier league- gets #1 pick, rather than prize money and it moves down like that. The prize money is allocated instead to the academies.

Now this would be more beneficial to every tier of english football. Because you only get one pick in round one. So rather than Chelsea having the 26 best 18 year olds in the country these are now shared out among teams, so a team in the bottom division is more likely to secure a player who is capable of playing for their side. Now if teams at the top want the best youth they will have to trade for it, which would lead to a large amount of money filtering down the tree.

There's probably a crazy amount of flaws to this but it would add the excitement of a draft pick and a new dimension to transfers. Imagine being in a position where rather than just selling Marhrez we also could have had their draft picks in the deal, leading to us having one of the best 18 year olds in the country for the next couple of seasons?

Sadly such an idea would be impossible to setup so it would be purely hypothetical.

However to add some discussion, I really like the system because it seems to ensure that even teams that suck eventually will see at minimum a really decent if not great team. In the NBA the Toronto Raptors who were the laughing stock of the league for years with at one point one of the worst ever records in NBA history just won the Grand Finals for their first ever World Series. This wasn't just achieved through good trades, but those trades helped them over time to create a good team.

Seeing many of the big teams these days wanting to forge ahead with a Super League and create a scenario where they can't be caught makes me really angry. The beauty of football is that it's a game that is accessible to all, jumpers for goalposts and all that. At Leicester we were blessed to see the greatest footballing story in history. Football in an ideal world would be more like that - the beautiful game, rather than be dominated by money.

So you want to introduce an American style draft but remove its only benefit?

Without play-offs its the only way it could work. Otherwise a team competing for the league, playing a mid table team at the end of the season, would lead to games being consistently thrown.

It would be impossible to implement a North American-style draft system because youth development in North America in most major sports is completely different to youth development in English football. (Edit to add that the "academy" style is becoming more prominent in MLS, but it is completely alien to the "Big Four" leagues.)

In the US, youth development is done completely independently from professional sports teams, whereas the majority of youth development in English football is managed by professional club academies, so there isn't a pool of top teenage talent in England that are unattached to professional clubs.

You'd have to completely blow up the development process and rip players from their clubs, and these ideas are non-starters.

This would be a terrible idea and would not work due in part to the league system, but also due to the global nature of the game.

We have promotion and relegation over at least 4 divisions, imagine the best young talent going down and playing in League 2  and The Premier League teams getting the left overs.

Tbh would that not improve the game? The best talent would play every minute rather than doing nothing like Foden.

No one in the NFL loses games to get the top draft pick -- draft picks aren't that important in gridiron. In the NBA -- where one 19-year-old can literally turn your team into a world-beater overnight -- they have a lottery among the worst teams for the first pick, so you don't have the incentive to throw games.

There are also "protected player" rules in some sports, where you can only "protect" some of your players from signing deals with other teams, so, let's say it's Man U -- suddenly all but 13 of their squad would be limited free agents in that system.

But U.S. sports 1) don't have relegation; 3) they aren't "clubs" really, but "franchises" in a league; 4) they use universities to develop players; 5) they don't, for the most part, sell players, but instead trade them, including for draft picks; and, most importantly, 6) players don't have guaranteed contracts, nor right of refusal, unless already a star. You don't pay a fee to buy Islam Slimani, you trade a player for him. If he doesn't work out, you aren't saddled with him for four years, you just release him, or trade him to another team for a different player --- and he can't say no!

Football in Europe is broken. Turning it into the NFL ain't the way to fix it.

This is true in respect to the fact that if you play at half-speed in such a physical sport, with the intention to lose, you will get seriously hurt. However, teams will often 'withdraw' their best players from action once the playoffs are out of reach, and have a good look at their young backups, with the added benefit that losing will give them a better draft pick.

As far as a draft system for English football goes, I can't see how it would work unless there was an amateur university football system.

Manure's American Owners are already trying to implement this by 'drafting' half our team into their roster.

did you say a draft system or a daft system?

Wasnt sure if it was a typo....

" oh well... doesnt matter if we have a bad season... we'll be able to pick up a couple of good players at the end of it... Go easy end of season lads, we could do with some good young 'uns....'

I'm imagining Chelsea buying out Danny Drinkwater and taking a cap hit through 2027, and also making Winston Bogarde a Bobby Bonilla-style payment every July 1 for the next 30 years lol

The draft system wouldn't work but I'd be all for a salary cap to be put in place.

That’s why I stated that you’d het higher picks for finishing higher. As a reward instead of a cash prize.

Main reason it wouldn't work...we dont have a university sports structure that is watched more than the professional teams.

Notre Dame get about 100k people watching their games, where people get scholarships.

Can you imagine that many people turning up to DMU to find a half decent left back? lol

The player-fan relationship would vanish..

We usually con ourselves..that a player chose to play for us,and even when he struggles...he's one of our own

Pelicans sat Anthony Davis out for second half of season, knowing the importance of a trade this close season & the improved chance of a draft with a losing record.

Cavs had a dogshit season after trading LeBron and knowing that other ageing players needed support. Sit on your money, have a bad season, don’t get relegated, get good draft and challenge again in the future.

It stinks in my opinion.

Impossible to do in US sports. It's what makes tanking possible.
