Players in someone’s team of the week 2019-20

Goalkeeper - Ederson

There were a few candidates for this, but even behind a back four that some people don't think can defend the Brazilian has still kept six clean sheets.

That's one below the leading pair of Dean Henderson and Nick Pope. Ederson though remains integral to this City side as they look to improve on their first half of the season.

Henderson was, perhaps harshly, overlooked for a glaring error that cost the Blades against Liverpool.

Ederson meanwhile continues to provide the basis for everything City do such is their possession-based game.

Defenders - Ricardo Pereira, Caglar Soyuncu, Jack O'Connell, Andy Robertson

Leicester take two out of the four defensive spots largely down to their defence being among the best in the league. The departure of Harry Maguire has made little to no difference with Turkish star Soyuncu among the stars of the season thus far.

Pereira's ability going forward is a huge asset for the Foxes and he has popped up with a vital goal or two this season including a vital one against Tottenham.

Sheffield's stellar year, which has seen them surpass all expectations, meant they were more than deserving of an inclusion. Several names were in with a out by we've gone with O'Connell who has played in all 18 games with Chris Wilder employing a hugely settled defence.

O'Connell finds him in the top five stats leaders for clearances and headed clearances.

Jack O'Connell, like Sheffield United, has stepped up seamlessly from the Championship
Robertson's form has continued over from last season although he is narrowly behind Trent Alexander-Arnold is their personal duel for most assists.

The Scotsman though didn't have as much competition for his left-back slot so is our pick so far this term.

Bournemouth's Nathan Ake and Tyrone Mings at Villa deserve a special mention for their efforts this term.

Midfielders - Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Kevin De Bruyne

Employing a 4-3-3 formation meant two places were up for grabs because De Bruyne slots straight in. The Belgian is, for me at least, the Player of the Year so far regardless of how far City are behind Liverpool.

He tops the league for assists, has smashed in some incredible goals and put in several displays this season that has made it look like men against boys.

Man City's standout player since Pep Guardiola arrived has been Kevin De Bruyne (Image: Getty)
Maddison, who performs a similar role to De Bruyne at Leicester, has gone up another level from last season. His England cap was long overdue and on current form he would have to be Gareth Southgate's pick.

Alongside him Tielemans, who has the luxury of playing alongside De Bruyne at international level, is our third and final pick.

The former Monaco man was on the radar of several top clubs before he settled on Leicester. He and Maddison have put through 24 through balls this season - the most from a duo playing in the same team.

James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have been key figures for Leicester City
Thier Foxes team-mate Wilfred Ndidi went close as did Jack Grealish. Mason Mount also started the season impressively, but hasn't been able to sustain that form.

Attackers - Tammy Abraham, Jamie Vardy, Sadio Mane

Five Premier league players have lready hit double figures for the season and two of them make our XI.

Sadio Mane has been Liverpool's standout player this season and received justifiable praise from Ballon D'Or winner Lionel Messi earlier this year. Jurgen Klopp's front three perfectly compliment each other, but this season the former Saint has been the most effective.

It was bear impossible to leave the league's top scorer - Vardy - out of the side. He scored in eight consecutive games this year and leads the way with 17 overall. He has attempted impressively to Brendan Rodgers' game plan to show he isn't all about speed, but pace certainly remains his most effective weapon.

Abraham has been one of this season's surprises having been entrusted by Frank Lampard.

The forward had proven himself in the Championship, but spells in the top flight hadn't always gone well. He scored a brace against Norwich in the third game of the season and hasn't looked back.

Sergio Aguero, who is serially overlooked, narrowly misses out having not quite produced his dazzling best. Danny Ings, who has hit 11 goals for Southampton, is also unlucky.

Alternative end-of-year football awards: Who was the best player? Who had the biggest meltdown?

Premier League player of the year - Jamie Vardy

_110223346_jamievardy.jpg

Vardy is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with 17 goals

Jamie Vardy has been a player reborn in 2019.

By the end of last year, Vardy's goalscoring record looked every bit that of a player heading into his twilight years as he reached Christmas with six goals in the first half of the 2018-19 season.

However, this year he has been back to his very best. He has scored 29 goals - 12 in the first half of the year and 17 in the second to date.

There is no doubt that the arrival of Brendan Rodgers has sparked Vardy's revival. Since the Northern Irishman's appointment on 26 February, Vardy has failed to score in only 12 games.

He's also managed to do all of this while having to suffer taunts from opposition fans due to the spat between his wife Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney.

There's been some big individual performances from a variety of players in 2019 but there's little doubt that it's... Jamie Vardy's year.

Best signing of the year - Youri Tielemans

_110223353_youritielemans.jpg

Tielemans has scored six goals and provided seven assists in 31 Premier League appearances for Leicester

Plenty of clubs spent big in the summer in an effort to improve their side and hopefully challenge higher up the table.

Arsenal splashed out a club record £72m to sign Nicolas Pepe, Tottenham spent £53.8m on Tanguy Ndombele while Manchester United brought in Harry Maguire from Leicester for £80m - a world record fee for a defender.

Back in August, BBC Sport readers voted for who they thought was the signing of the summer and it was Pepe who came out on top.

That's not quite worked out, and while there is time for Pepe to come good it's not going to happen before the end of 2019.

So instead, the star performer we have picked out is Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian midfielder joined Leicester initially on loan in January before making his move a permanent one in the summer for a club record £40m.

Tielemans is now a key component in one of the strongest and most exciting midfields in the Premier League and, considering some of the enormous fees spent elsewhere, he is looking like the bargain buy of the summer.

Strong team that. I’d have Wilf in for Youri and Henderson in for Ederson-aside from that, hard to argue...

Ederson the only real surprise in there, not that he’s not a great goalkeeper, more that he hasn’t really stood out the way perhaps Kasper, Henderson or Pope and even thought they are bottom Ben Foster has had a great year, arguably if it wasn’t for him they’d be down already.

Amazing also that we have half of the team of the year so far, and you still come away thinking Kasper and Wilf are unlucky not to be in there too as is Evans.

If there was any doubt Garth Crooks was the biggest idiot in football, check out the goalkeeper in his team of the Week.

Hint: it’s not the guy who made 3 world class saves, including a penalty from one of the best strikers in the world.

It’s the other fella in that game, his reason? Because Vardy hit the post and then He knocked Iheanacho out, great reasoning Garth. You can’t make this shit up.

That's a new level of incompetence. I'm actually stunned.

On the day when heading is banned in primary schools because of future damage, he's applauding a goalkeeper for nearly knocking out one of our players

And I thought Coote was the imbecile of the week. Tough luck David, sterling effort, close but no cigar.

Sky sources are usually wrong so I'll go with WhoScored ;)

Looked at the article they did with that team, they've used tackles per 90 minutes, which put Sidibe just ahead of Ricardo.
