Starmer Next Labour Leader

Think this is worth a topic of its own given the magnitude of Corbyn's loss and how badly the party lost. Losing seats that have never been Tories. Losing seats they'd never lost in decades.

The huge swings from Labour to Tory in key seats and also strongholds in the past. 

 

So who will take over in a way that will provide a decent strong opposition to the Tories because let's face it, it's been severely lacking for several months. 

 

Starmer, Long-Bailey? McDonnell? Rayner or Phillips?

Think Starmer’s comments suggest he’s going to run. I’d imagine there’s a few who would love to get their hands on this Labour Party and give it a royal ****ing shake up

I’d go for Yvette Cooper if they want to stand a chance of becoming elected. Unless they move big strides to the centre, they will stay in the shadows.

As a member I’ll be voting for Starmer if he runs. His integrity and intelligence is what the party needs right now. The reality is however is that a Corbyn ally will win.

Starmer, Cooper, Phillips, anybody remotely sensible to do the Kinnock job of dragging them kicking and screaming back towards any sort of reason.

 

It won't happen though - Corbyn's cranks all control the party structures now and the membership are already making their excuses - Brexit, the media, Blairites etc etc.

Yeah absolutely. Most likely Long-Bailey I reckon. Their grip on the party is irreversible from my perspective. Even this morning the likes of Owen Jones and Ash Sarker are in complete denial that this country will not vote for a socialist government. It’s ideology over realism and at the end of the day we need to accept that this is a centrist country, it always will be and in this election, bizarrely, Johnson was closer to the centre, therefore won, oh and Brexit.

Not a Labour voter, but this election, and all since the Brexit referendum have been a strange time with regards to party directions, just interested.

Anyone who's not percieved by the publc as sneaky weasel with anti-semetic veiws and links to terroist organisations. I'm not surprised the tories did so well with Johnson at the helm, he's seen as the roguish country bumpkin with the british bulldog spirit who'd buy your granny a sherry in the pub. Whether these things are true or not is nothing to do with it, it's all about image and perception, anyone with half a braincell will realise that all of a sudden 50000 police officers, 100000 nurses and a partridge in a pear tree are not going to suddenly materialise.

I like Starmer but is a posh London remainer the person who will reclaim the Labour backing from the North? Nice bloke and a good politician but not the one to reclaim Labour seats IMO.

Someone a bit younger would be nice and not an old dinosaur for a change. The party needs a royal shakeup like never before but never is there such a shakeup in politics, Labour have made come catastrophic errors over the recent years, it would be nice to see a fresh new face with new ideas that could probably inject a bit of pride back into the party.

They had a royal shake up when they re-invented themselves as New labour, and eventually everyone realised they were just a reincarnation of the tory party.

I actually really like Angela Rayner, but she’s already been beaten with sticks about her leaving school at 16 and being a grandma at 40. The press would have a field day. Thick-accented northerner who does seem to get it. Don’t think she’s a full on Corbyn ally either.
