Racism

I pointed out to stewards outside the ground  before the Spurs game that 3 away fans were taking in either flares or fireworks and pointed them out and nothing was done so what on earth are the going to do with someone making gestures or chanting?

Racism and nationalism - ideas you'd think thoroughly discredited by (fairly recent) history, and by the posession of even a basic amount of intelligence and/or decency - seem to have made a most unwelcome return in the last few years.

People communicating through phones etc with like-minded types rather than the actual world around them may have something to do with it. Social media creates self-referential groups which tend to reinforce existing views, however dumb.

In a diverse city like Leicester people soon realise there's very little difference between them, and racism tends to wither away.

But even here, if people find reinforcement for crackpot views so easily available, problems can arise.

In the end though, good sense and decency - which I still think most of us posess - will defeat it.

But I suppose even the chronically thick and unpleasant need a platform. Hence the existence of Tottenham Hotspur...

My brother got racially abused at Man City on Saturday. Leicester fans were excellent and told the stewards immediately.

And Chelsea, I mean it’s not as though Chelsea headhunters never had an affiliation with c18 is it.

In this current time of "needing to be noticed", some people will view their own import as more relevant than conforming to basic societal standards. They can therefore put this need before others and latch onto any means to get their perceived deserts. It is far simpler to shout louder/be more controversial, than merit the attention through sustained effort that benefits the whole of society.

Or perhaps I am just old and out of touch.

LCFC actually has one of the highest arrest numbers for racism related arrests in football IIRC.

Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Probably good actually, as it proves that people are more willing to report it and the police more likely to act on it.

Can't say it's really a statistic to be proud of.

Seems to be more prominent among older supporters from the County in my experience which I realise is generalising a bit but that's just how I've found it, because while it is no excuse they were bought up in different times when it was a lot more accepted.

I can honestly say that I have not heard one single racist slur from a spectator in all my years of watching at the King Power. Not one.

It was very different following football back in the 70s and 80s of course, but society, thank goodness, has made massive forward strides in this regard since then.

It amazes me that Kick it Out and the like seem so loath to acknowledge this. Their message is always so stern, discouraging and negative - though perhaps they feel they need to be that way in order to justify their existence.

There will always be the odd retard still living in the past - you can never legislate for everyone (though of course you can punish them accordingly if found guilty) - but I think that the occasional positive appreciation of how far we have all moved forward would be more beneficial to the ‘anti-racism’ cause than the gloomy (perhaps inflammatory to some) hand-wringing blame-game that is becoming increasingly ubiquitous every time there is an incident of the kind witnessed yesterday at Tottenham.

Because, let’s face it, if Kick it Out and the like truly believe that racism is getting worse (which their comments encourage us to believe), then they could probably do with a change of tactics.

Don't think there's any doubt that racism, in fact all hate crimes, have been on the rise over the last few years.

If so, then why? What’s caused it? That’s where the focus should be.

I agree, the backdrop of anti-globalism, fuelling nationalism just further fuels racism. (Intentionally or otherwise).

General rise of populist and dog-whistle politics.

A government who blamed those on sickness benefits.

Brexit

Leaders of both main parties with questions to answer about their own racism.

Nope - the guy wasn’t punished at all despite one of the stewards hearing it. Shame really. A report was filed but no doubt it won’t result in any action. Few Man City fans have tried to identify the guy’s photo on twitter but no luck.

Before I wade in, could I once again request that statements about our individual politicians and the inevitable diversion it causes be removed, please.

There's a Politics Thread for a reason, and I avoid it because I simply do not wish to have to read uninformed rhetoric, argument and hatred. I'd really really appreciate it being removed from here, rather than being tacitly approved by its continuing existence.

we have our own idiots ...... at Luton a group of 18/22 year olds began to sing ‘town full of p****,’ before deciding it was best to stop as they began the p word .....

the point is that they probably would have sung that if they were alone ....... sad to hear the younger generation sullied by the scourge of racism ......

Politics in this country, and the two leaders having their own problems with racism, has allowed racism to creep back into football.

Don't think you can treat racism in football as separate to racism in the wider society.

The issue is being massively and rightly so IMO highlighted at the moment. I hope and pray and trust my fellow foxes fans and home supporters are the beacon of light on Boxing Day when the eyes of the global audience are upon the KP.

I’m living in California and it’s been touted as the marque game for a while now. Trust there are no mindless idiots in the Liverpool away section either. 🤞🏽 Football is much more a unifying force than those that choose to make it devisive. If we had no diversity in the game just think of the amazing legendary players that have graced our game since the beginning.

COYF make Leicester proud! 🦊
