Racism

No place agreed but we have all heard the lower level terms Jock Paddy Taff Pom Limey. I have Sihk friends who enjoy a bacon sandwich and the reaction they can get.My neighbour thinks/calls himself   a Paki even though he was born here.

There is a line not to step over and best people to deal with it are the folk in the next seats however difficult that may be .

one day, when there is no colour based racism in the world (and most people in this country and the ‘west’ as a whole are a nice coffee col shade as will most likely happen) , it will be the same ....... I won’t see it ....l would love to be around though !

White people face almost no racial abuse, prejudice or anything of the like and you’re saying you can’t handle being called “white boy”? It’s the same people who think making fun of white people’s seasoning is equivalent to saying paki bastard etc, I’m convinced white right wingers are the biggest snowflakes around.

I think one of the problems in the UK is that we constantly tell ourselves "well it's not as bad as [x country]". Anti-racism has been used as something we can pat ourselves on the back about. It became, ironically, a source of national pride and a way to rank ourselves favourably against other countries. The reality, of course, is that it's impossible to quantify how racist a country is, and it's missing the point anyway.

In my experience, UK is nowhere near as bad as many nations, that includes majority of Europe, Asia and America.

 

We have come leaps and bounds since the 80's in overt racism.

I agree with this point. It's a massive issue right now and goes deeper than just racism. Unfortunately there will always be a minority of idiots that do and say unspeakable things, but society is getting a nasty habit of painting large majorities with the same brush they paint these idiotic minorities with. It's a vicious cycle and just creates resentment.

A little context is important. By your logic, just about every nation is built on racism. You do realise the term didn't really exist back then and if you were around in that era you would have committed all sorts of unspeakable acts that you would have felt were right, and godly. 

 

The British Empire is largely celebrated because it shaped the modern world we live in today. History is history. We learn from it.

You are right. Every Empire was built by invading, pillaging, dominating. If you’re talking about our history though, should you have been born even a hundred years ago you’d have been the same as any of them. I think although we aren’t perfect, we are as a society a marked improvement from where we were even a decade or two ago and also far further ahead on the issue of racism than most other countries on earth.

We've veered happily on the empire! Cool! No country can invade another and nick their stuff while sayings things like "These people are different, and we find their ways strange, but they are our equals". Won't work. You need to say they're uncivilised then you can pack that bag o' loot and sail happily back homewards.

I’m 20 and I can say that I have 100% seen a massive rise in racism in the last few years, can’t comment on decades ago but my family experienced plenty from national front dickheads

What utter rubbish, when I was younger a couple of times late at night walking home I had abuse shouted at me by passing cars full of Asian cretins like Whitey and honky **** and was spat at by a group of black lads whilst cycling to work, racist cretins come in all colours and you making excuses for it is laughable.

When I was a kid back in the 70s there was a big riot on Catherine street between the NF, police and a large group of Asian peeps that was a scary sight and half an hour later at least four Asian men tried to break into the house when my mum foolishly opened the door to them and my dad was at work, still remember it to this day.

Fact of the matter is, anyone can be a racist cnut, does not matter the colour of your skin.
