The mobile alert for the Barrow flooding was awful.

What do you mean?  Grim reading or just badly written?

No, it made a loud and unexpected alarm sound on our mobiles. I guess they overcompensate with the area but we’re the Rothley side of Mountsorrel so not particularly close.

Pretty much, yes. Poor infrastructure planning for new builds, lack of long term thought, and not accounting for changes in weather habits that have been patently obvious to predict for a long time.

The rain intensity models were last updated in 2022 though not all local authorities insist that the new model is used.

That being said, all new developments including brown field developments have a maximum water run off equivalent to green field run off rates including an additional 40% for climate change.

The policies on storm water for individual sites is strictly controlled as the water authorities as private companies wish to minimise what goes into their drains. There is an issue with maintenance of the drains and also the overland water courses which don't seem particularly well cleared. I also think the rainfall intensity we are now exceeds the models and also the frequency between extreme events has reduced.

What's the state around Barrow now? Google Maps telling me the road is passable around the Soar Bridge which I cant believe for a second.

It didn’t seem too bad this morning. But I guess most people were just avoiding it. My mate who lives near the garage, works in quorn had to go via Seagrave, a46, a6 just to get to work.

Got the flood warning come through at 6:50 and I thought there was gonna be some sort of air strike lol

Ok nice one. My neighbour is helping out down at proctors and said they are evacuating people, seems quite bad!

red alert danger to life on .gov website

Had the fire brigade there at the bridge didn’t they. Only needs a shower for it to be a bit of a concern that way and if it spits slash lane floods.

Remember, climate change is "normal" and "has always happened". Humans just need to "adapt" to the flooding by developing gills and laying their eggs in moss higher up hills.

According to climate change experts the Midlands will turn into a coastal haven with white beaches and tropical weather.  I welcome it

Is it now to open a tiki beach bar and own your own nudist male only beach?

Yeah, think I'll be back in tomorrow barring any further rain but I'll be on alert for that sound coming through! Happened to my boss this morning.

A lot of the problem is dredging policy.  In the seventies, policy was to dredge rivers to let the water flow quickly.  Now, policy is not to dredge rivers because it's better for wildlife.  The water can't get away as fast so it builds up and builds up until it has to go somewhere else.  Couple that with less efficient maintenance of drainage systems, and more houses on flood plains and the Victorian sewers being 50 years older, and it adds up to floods.

... and, yet again, that we're getting more water with more intensity over less time in the first place, due to increasing global average temperatures.
