This is intended to be an open question, not an attempt to re-write history, make excuses or anything else. We all of us, I think, have a tendency to either allow results to cloud what went on overall or to just say everything is great /awful. All positions are understandable.

With this in mind, and regardless of final results, which performances from our boys looked 'top 4' to you. For example, I'd argue that the 2nd half at Chelsea did, whereas the win at home to Watford didn't.

All opinions welcome, just try to avoid rubbishing of opinions you don't hold. Please 😊

Our record vs the better sides this season was mediocre/poor. Thst is something we have to improve upon. There were so many standout performances though this season, I just hope we can arrest this slump as Rodgers had us playing some of the best football I have ever seen at Leicester, we were scintillating.

Fair points. But you've not answered the question...

We played some fantastic stuff in the run before Christmas we were sweeping sides away ruthlessly. I would love us to start playing like that again, instead of the ponderous sideways piffle we have served up since Christmas.

I genuinely think when we played like that we are one of the best most entertaining sides to watch, like someone above said probably the best I have ever seen. The sad part is some of the recent games have been some of the worst too, Bournemouth in particular.

Rodgers also shows far too much respect for the bigger sides which I think was the start of our downfall. If you go head to head with these sides battle and get beat fair enough, but we rolled over and let them tickle our belly.

I hope we can bring in the players required to reinvigorate the side. As a minimum we need a defender, a creative midfielder, a least one winger, a Vardy replacement, and some squad players for the extra games. If we cant afford to bring in additional players we might need to revisit the likes of Silva.

I would argue the Watford game was "top 4" material just like the Southampton away performance. Teams that end up achieving what they set out to do get wins when they haven't really played well. We didn't really perform against Watford at home nor against Everton but we got the job done - that is the mark of a good team. In fact, had we been able to do that consistently throughout the season, we would've achieved top 4 status. United were fairly ordinary for three quarters of the season but kept in there. They only really turned it on in the last month or so. We achieved the championship in 2015/16 not just because of outstanding performances against Man City away or Liverpool at home but because we were able to grind out wins against Sunderland away and Southampton at home when we hadn't really played that well.

Basically, we have a top 4 starting 11 and I am happy to argue with anyone city fan or otherwise who disputes that. We just need to obtain a level of consistency to achieve that position and add to a squad so that we have the know how/ability to grind out wins when that starting 11 is missing key components.

That's interesting, because I thought the first half was absolutely fantastic. The less said about the 2nd half, the better!

All points taken and understood, but you've argued it on a results basis rather than performance - although I would admit there is a lot of crossover. I'm just trying to get people to say which games they thought we played superbly in, regardless of the end result.

I wouldn't quite say fantastic, we were ok, you have to bear in mind Bournemouth were at that point tragic, hadn't won in months. We should have put them to the sword. The irony is if we had beat we would have been in the Champions League.

It ain't that simple - who knows what might have happened, but it's all about opinions.

I think there were probably 10-15. But you don't need to perform at that level week in week out. All the big clubs have games where they look average but manage to grind out results. It feels like in most games we have to outplay the opponent to win, which is very hard to sustain. I can't remember one win this season where I thought wow we got away with it there.

Which is the point. Its a result based industry. We forget footballers are human, they have off days. If Vardy misses five chances in a game but buries one right at the death, that is just as impressive and a success had he scored a hat-trick. What I am saying is (without the obvious quote reference to Brendan), character when the chips are down can be a "superb" performance.

People will remember the Everton at home and the celebrations when they think back to this season. Just like they will remember the Southampton away result and performance. The Everton performance because we dug in to get the results was bloody great. That, for me was top 4 standard. We got a result when for most of the game we just weren't at the races. The ability to continue going literally to the final whistle was impressive. That result, as a fan made me feel just as good about this team as the Southampton away win.

Of course it did - but does that mean any win is a 'top 4 performance'? Without wishing to be provocative, was Bournemouth's win over us a 'top 4 performance'?

I am of course being silly here - but do you see what I mean? Honestly, how many games were there where you thought 'Wow, we deserve to be up there'? For my part, looking back, it's not as many as I remembered.

Haha OK, 6 of the 8 wins on the spin from October to December were top 4 like and bar the Everton and Watford wins which felt a bit turgid all the others we were so dominant. Even the Burnley game where we conceded first and Wood had an equaliser rescinded by VAR, we were certain to win it you could tell.

Plenty in the first half of the season flat track bullies in some games (Southampton, Newcastle) and clinical in others (Palace away).

That's the difference the big teams tend to find away. Whether is a sneaky dive in the opposition box or whatever.

Sometimes you can beat teams by just out battling them even if the performance isnt good, I can think we have ever out battled opposition. Only really Everton at home I thought we got away with it, that was the first worrying performance for me as Silvas Everton were better than us that day, they out fought us and outplayed us first half
